Oculus Rift will start taking pre-orders tomorrow at 8:00 Pacific.

If you have a PC that is capable of running VR (I use a i7 5930 at 4.4ghz/32GB DDR4/GTX 980), YOU SHOULD STOP WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING AT 8:00 TOMORROW AND ORDER ONE.

I've been using DK2 in Elite Dangerous since the game launched, I can't describe it to you, but it is hands-down the most immersive, incredible, awesome experience you can have in front of a computer. I'm a god damned space pilot; that's the best way I can put it.

Alien Isolation? Very pedestrian on a monitor, not bad but kind of like most things, forgettable. Playing on Oculus Rift? Scream-out-loud, intense, "Jesus Christ why did I play this at night, I'm not going to be able to go to sleep now."

Dying light? Not a bad game on a monitor, again forgettable. Playing on Oculus Rift "HOLY FUCK I DON'T EVEN LIKE HEIGHTS WHY AM I DOING THIS?!"

Assetto Corsa? Yaay, I'm playing a driving game, I kind of like driving games, this one is not bad. On Rift? "Jesus Christ I'm a fucking race car driver, holy shit I can naturally look at the apex of a turn and steer into it, this is fucking great!!"

The games for VR will only get better, too. I cannot sing the praises of this thing enough.

Yeah Vive might be better, but this one will be available first so I'll wind up getting both.

Oculus Rift is a joke, VR will never be a thing as there is no current technology that can combine your brain with hardware/software. Oculus Rift at best is like going to see a 3d movie, while yes its cool for the first time, it quickly loses its value.

its not even VR.

Calling it VR is just wrong for so many reasons.

It doesn't cover even 3 of the human senses, nevermind all 5 senses.

Its a fun expansion on the 3D movie gimmick.

I'll be willing to call it VR when you can give me a melee combat game that tracks my RL body as a ragdoll (no canned animations). I'm even willing to settle for no force feedback. You could still do a pretty sweet lightsaber type game where your sword can cut through anything in the environment, although decent fencing will be out of the question until force feedback is doable and I can't even begin to imagine how that would be achieved. And all of this would be better accomplished by using mocap style tracking on a human body, not a clumsy and stupid head gyroscope.

I do like the idea of the monitor taking up my entire field of view tho. I'm excited for that. But the push for novel input devices that is happening alongside Oculus is the actual exciting part of this, and I just don't see anything reasonably priced or particularly interesting coming soon.

Enjoy your gay monitor and craning your neck around like an 8 year old trying to get the Wiimote to track properly so you can look at an inferior 3d-rendered anime girl's tits.

Force feedback could be done with a system of pistons, pulleys, or lockable joints all over the suit that would prevent you from moving a certain way (like if you cross sabers with someone and cannot move your saber further on it's arc)

With this PC, I have to turn down a number of settings in Elite Dangerous when I land on planets, otherwise the frame-rate hit is nausea-inducing.

Some games I can set at ultra settings and it's fine, some stuff not so much. This will most likely all change with the release of the Pascal line of video cards in Q2 '16, but right now a single 980 (I can't speak about the ti's) isn't enough to run Elite Dangerous on max settings while driving around on planets.

Anything where you sit in a cockpit, a driver's seat, etc, is freaking awesome. If you're not in to those kind of games though, it is a good idea to wait.

The bolt-on stuff in games like Skyrim, GTAV etc...is "cool," but you can definitely tell VR support has been bolted on.

Personally - I like flying and I like driving, so even if VR doesn't get mass-market appeal, I'm going to be very happy.

Trouble with VR is that you need to run two HD versions of the game at once, so it is pretty graphics intensive that's probably the most troubling part of the whole thing, which is sad :( but it doesn't mean it isn't amazing still.

also for all all of you poor adult children who don't have friends or are too sad to leave your basement & haven't tried it.. you'd be surprised how powerful the mind can be when tricking you into thinking you are in another environment than the one you are in while wearing a headset.

That kind of stuff is likely too complex for most of you to understand, but it is really amazing.

What I am looking forward to with VR are few things:

1. A work station, so I can get rid of my monitors on my desk.
2. Watching TV with it on, in a VR movie theater, with all my friends at home comfortably in their own living rooms, hanging out chatting about the walking dead as we watch it together.
3. Games.

It is....but there is some bullshit you have to put up with, namely none of the interface stuff works in the rift. You wind up having to take it off and put it back on after every race. It's not a huge deal, but everyone has their own bullshit threshold and one of the most important things about VR is setting the right expectations. I'm assuming that in April when the consumer versions of these things ship out, most of this will be a thing of the past, but right now it must be said you have to do nonsense in a lot of games to get the Rift to work.

I've heard iRacing works better than Assetto Corsa, but have yet to try it due to my limited gaming time all being invested in Elite.

Where is the bottleneck these days?

I have completely lost touch with the tech...It used to be the HDD to processor channel?

Will accept a one-phrase answer if pals don't care to elaborate.

i see he has liquid cooling so chances are the processor stays plently cool. He could be using a cheap low rpm hdd. 5400 is really crappy. Im using a 7200 rpm atm but want to get a 10000 rpm and a ssd for my OS. his Graphics card could be over heating which would reduce frame-rate. Also his psu could be starting to die. Something i see alot. Even the expensive ones like his die. I had a corsair tx 750 die with in 4 months. They replaced it of course but it still died. I noticed frame rates going down about two weeks before it died and then my pc would redscreen wich normally means not enough power or graphic card issues. im not sure what the max operable temps are on a 980 but i have had my hd 7970 up to 75c during a furmark benchmark .

this doesn't sound theoretically impossible but so expensive and clumsy and laughable as to remove any real ability to market it. If it did exist it'd be something you'd have to pay money to play in some kind of a gaming establishment.

It would be cool if arcades returned as places to use specialized and expensive VR hardware, but I doubt that the market is there to justify the specialized R&D required to make this particular contraption and the software to go with it if it couldn't be put in every household. I am hoping that the new gaming peripherals like treadmills and reactive rooms and such will trigger the return of meatspace gaming spots though.

The dream is something more like a faux sword that can be suspended in midair and have forces applied to it using some kind of an electrical or magnetic field in a charged enclosure. Whether this is even theoretically possible with current tech I don't know enough about physics to say. Calling Tesla & Lune.

I just want a game where I get to be a samurai by physically moving my body. I'll call it VR and suck your dick and pay you a year's salary when you make it happen, even if it's primitive as shit and requires me to put on an Iron Man suit. This has been my dream since the beginning of videogames, and playing that stupid camera-controlled fighting game at the Gameworks in Vegas that played canned punching / kicking animations when it saw you punching and kicking. It's really fucking sad that Bushido Blade is still the absolute pinnacle of this genre.

The minimum VR specs are significantly higher than those of the main game; if you look under the VR section of their site, you'll see they call for a 970.

There is no bottle neck in the PC; it's a matter of overall bandwidth in that the GTX 980 I have just can't render all settings in ultra at 75hz. The 1080 or whatever they call the Pascal cards will probably be able to do it, when VR headsets support SLI a second 980 will probably be able to do it, but right now the only solution is to turn down the settings. A Titan might be able to do it, but I highly doubt it and I'm not willing to make a thousand dollar gamble on a same-generation card.

The HDD configuration is 1 250GB Samsung 850 for Windows, 1 250 Samsung 850 for VR games (currently houses only Elite Dangerous), and one 2TB Western Digital 7200 Enterprise Edition HDD for other games.

The case is a Fractal R5, I got it because it does not have a gaudy window on the side, fits in my desk, and can mount a 280MM radiator.

The fans are Noctua's purchased for their ability to move lots of air quietly and not for their looks. I buy internals based on performance, nothing else factors into my decision. Why is the RAM striped red and black? Because when I had to RMA one of the kits to Corsair, all they had available was a black kit, and when I originally bought the ram all Amazon had in stock was a red kit.

i actually saw noctus' like 10 mins later on ebay and was like " i bet those were it."

I currently have a fx 6300 black edition. i have never had to overclock it. I think im going to wait till i get my full atx case so i have plenty of room for a radiator for the liquid cooling though. I might get a water block for my video card as well. It can over clock pretty high still and has a lot of life left in it for a 3 year old card.
