View Full Version : New Chat Anti-Spam?

After this past Sunday's patch, I've been noticing some new chat anti-spam feature. As a new player, how am I supposed to interact with NPCs for quests and quest advancement when I can't speak. I can't even shop at the EC tunnel anymore.

[B]Rogean: Accounts with characters under level 5 will now be subject to the following chat limits across all public channels:
2 Messages per 10 seconds.
Messages must be under 80 characters.
Messages must contain 70% Lowercase alphabet.
/QUOTE]
Shouldn't take long to hit level 5.
EDIT: Not to mention, 80 characters is plenty for NPCs. 2 messages every 10 seconds is also plenty to do just about any interaction you need til level 5. Yeah, it sucks that we have to have a filter in the first place, but I was one of the people suggesting they implement something of this nature to combat the recent spammer we've had.
Level 5 comes quickly, and you don't actually -need- to interact with, well... anything in the EC tunnel to get there. If you're worried about selling stuff, you could either just bank it til 5, or wait for someone to auction WTB the item you have (Under level 5 is probably bone chips and pelts, so it happens often) and just /tell them.

None of these spam rules would prevent a character from interacting with an NPC.
Additionally, the spam filter does not prevent the server from processing a message against NPC's. NPC's will still react as long as it doesn't hit the 1 message per half-second limitation. If it hits the sub-5 spam filter it will just not be delivered to other players, but NPC's still see and process it.

That's nifty to know. So the messages still go through, it's just masked from chat if it violates the filter eh? Quite handy.

Since I just joined P99 a day before the patching, I created several alts just to get a feel of which class to become my main. So none of them are higher then L.4. But I think the spam timeouts are a lot longer. I know I can chat in /guild no problem but I wonder if that counts against the spam timeout? Even emotes are being restricted hehe.

Emotes are a public channel. /Guildchat is not.

/shrug Buckle down for an hour or so and push one of them to 5? If you truly feel lockouts are longer than 10 seconds, petition or bug report forums. But I mean... Rogean is here responding to you so...

What about tells? I just rerolled on red and people (guildies, peeps I met on here, etc.) keep trying to /tell me and I can't hold a conversation because the spam filter is denying me.

Tells are considered a private channel by us but for the purpose of the spam filter it does apply to them, because it is necessary to prevent new accounts from mass spamming tells to the entire server.

Be more specific if possible. How many conversations, and were all of them simultaneously going on?

4 different people at 4 separate times. Guild chat and /ooc worked fine though.

Probably needs a tweak, unless those above level 5 are unaffected.
There are a lot of social scenarios where communication is very important during guild drama, loot discussion, and banter.
What was the rate limit cooldown? 60 seconds or so?

I was trying to communicate with 1 player on a level 1 character that I created to do an item transfer, and it was infuriating. Send 1 message, and then wait 60 whatever seconds with a thumb up your ass while your friend's wondering why you won't reply.
Sucks that the spam has caused such filters to be necessary, but I think it's a little too aggressive with tells. Realistically you would have to send hundreds of tells very quickly to spam the server, why not set the limit somewhere a bit higher but still far too low to effectively spam? Or base the limit off of how many unique names you can send tells to? Or best yet, just remove the filter once a player has responded to your initial tell? Guess it's a bit more complicated to impliment, but the current implementation seems rather obtrusive for new players in an already rather confusing game. just my 2c

Mine wasn't even 60 sec. I could send approx 20 lines of text before it would stop me. If I waited a little bit (maybe 60 sec?) I could send 1 more tell then I was literally locked out of tells for the rest of the night (~2-2.5hrs)

I had similar issues while I would jump between alts that were all below level 5. The moment when I moved from one alt to another, I was instantly being blocked from /ooc and /auction chat for several hours.

Account might have been created back in June'2015, but I didn't have a copy of the Titanium CDs until last month. So I went off and played on one of the Live Progression servers that summer.

As a level 2 I can't chat at all, I always get the red anti spam message.

It can't take more than 10 minutes to hit 5 on that server with the exp rates.

Yeah no shit, but the point is to stay level 1 so that you can't get pvped and get your plat stolen. It's a trader.

I'm a new P99 (but not new to EQ) player since a couple of weeks back and loving it so far, what a great community! But this filter made it very difficult to get started and communicate with other players and NPCs. I was not even able to "hail" NPCs in Halas to get newbie quests, so surely itīs not quite working as intended.

That sucks Nathaniel; try and play through the pain. That's what this game is anyways, right? =p

ya this is really, really, really hindering me as a lowbie...I cant even interact in EC to sell stuff...glad I offloaded my bone chips with only a couple tells before I basically got what seems to be fully blocked...
The spam protection is way way more strict than posted here, or it's bugged.

Hello I am a new player from Nigeria.
Unfortunately my home country does not allow Project 1999.
However, Project 1999 leaders already said, I can use log in and passwords of friends!
Purely as gift, have several AoN. Send me info, my government is trying tp take AoN's so time is important.
