Hi there.. Played EQ from as early on as Kunark all the way through Gates of Discord..
Starting an Iksar Monk on Blue. Looking forward to meeting some people and reliving some old experiences. Anyone have any tips for me starting out? Been a long time since I have played EQ!

Don't use the boats.
Unlike live of the era, all the boats work here, even the Bloated Belly... well hasn't killed me yet anyway :D

Save spider silk and bone chips, sell them for a (relative) buttload of cash to other players when you leave Kunark.

Dude, going from Firiona Vie to Butcherblock is a harrowing experience. The shuttles behave very very oddly.

Work is a very loose term. Unless you consider that they do in fact float on the water.
Stay in FoB til you can get to a comfortable level to run to Overthere. Then get a port wherever you want to go.
The downside about being a monk is you can't carry a whole lot, I would focus on exp for now and try to find plat another way.
All the monks I've talked to don't care about weight until they're 50+. There's an AC penalty but it's minimal compared to the benefits of carrying more stuff to sell and so on. I say earn enough money to get a bag of the tinkerers and decent weapons and then kill all the things!

That's odd, I've been on the boats here many times, never had an issue, nothing compared to the long swims on live. People even complained on forums about them pretty regularly, which is rare to see here. Bloated Belly is funky, but it heals the damage... which is lol. Just don't stand near the bow I think, not up on the structure. Stand more center deck closer the the stern but away from the edge.
There was a patch issue here last summer, boats were screwed up for I think a couple months, with pathing issues and such sorts of problems. As far as I can tell all that was resolved by fall (September or so).

People don't complain about the boats here because. We have made getting around the world a whole lot easier, basically taking the boats out of the equation. With the exception of getting to TD we are everywhere and can get people anywhere. I didn't think it would come across as they are broken so much as if u want to spend half your day traveling by boat by all means do so.

No really, whenever I hit the boats I am rarely the only one on the boat. Early on, far more people. But even still today, it's rare to be alone on the boat at least during peak time, and excluding the bloated belly of course. FV boat can be lonely sometimes, but just like on live it was.
Some people just don't like the boats, that's nothing new. Yeah, it can take a long time. The FV boat even use to rubberband on live as I notice it does here too sometimes. Always the worse thing though was just getting dumped in the ocean, big reason they eventually shut them down on live as I recall, which was sad. Boats here are nothing as close to bugged like they were on live.

And those are the people who don't know about what we do. Hence when I see a new player I tend to say don't use the boats. And just /who all dial

Tip: Don't eat wolf sandwiches.
Why? just because too *shrugs* :D
Here's a real tip: pick up a tradeskill early on, make your own starting armor or whatever may be useful. The wiki has a pretty decent tradeskill section to look up, all relevant to this server by era.
Depending on your class, this could help out a lot with trying to make plats early on vs just trying to level, so you can do things like use those bone chips for turn in exp rather than just trying to not be nekid. Could last you to mid teens where farms are a little better (e.g. selling CB belts to players for plats) for getting equipment at EC to last you to mid levels at least.
Really the only armor making that would be out of reach is making plate, where as if you made your first roll a heavy armor dependent class which is not such a hot idea (even the bronze armor option really sux). But for leather or banded it's doable - banded not right away but doable by the teens with a little farming of junk to sell to players. Banded is not that much more expensive to make compared to finding a player to buy a set from.
Weapons are easy to get though, off in EC tunnel (where everyone trades). Common to see weapons for 10-20pp there, good enough to hit mobs that are invulnerable to non-magic weapons (e.g. willowisps).
