I plan to bicycle again this weekend. Last weekend I did 40minutes of something like interval training with my bike employing regular variation in resistance and speed, passing fluidly between slow powerful strokes and and rapid gentler ones. My legs were like jello for the rest of the day and along with my taint, were sore for 3 days afterwards. My tailbone found the experience most disagreeable, but overall it felt pretty good. Gonna do some planks and upper back exercises too to keep kyphosis at bay.

2 Science-Backed Strategies to Avoid Long-Term Weight Gain

With weight gain, slow and steady is the common pace—we often look back, wondering: “How did I get to this weight?” Long-term weight gain typically happens at a miniscule 1-2 pounds per year, which can snowball into something substantial as we age. Fad diets lure us with the promise of rapid weight loss, but researchers are looking at it from a different angle: Can changing what we eat stop long-term steady weight gain?
What the Science Says
Scientists from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy did a study using data collected from 120,784 healthy, non-obese, middle-age participants in three well-established cohorts: Nurses’ Health Study, Nurses’ Health Study II, Health Professionals’ Follow-up Study. Data was collected at every four-year period for 16 to 24 years.
Researchers were interested in how participants’ diet quality affected their trend in weight gain. Without altering anyone’s food intake, the researchers looked at what participants consumed, with a focus on protein and the glycemic load (GL)—two measures of diet quality. Then, they examined how changes in participants’ weight corresponded to diet quality. Why?
High-protein foods (think meats, dairy, nuts, beans) are thought to help with weight loss because of their ability to promote satiety, spare lean muscle mass, and help offset the slow in metabolism. GL was used because it reveals both carbohydrate quality and quantity. The more popular “glycemic index” (GI) is used to assess how a food will increase your blood sugar, but this doesn’t account for the amount of the food that you eat. GL accounts for both the food’s GI and portion eaten. High GL foods (think refined carbs) are thought to make weight gain more likely because they make your blood sugar rise rapidly—leading to insulin release, which favors fat storage.
Weighty Findings
Once the data was collected, the researchers could then summarize “associations,” also known as data trends, between certain types of food and weight gain or loss. Here are some of their weightier findings:
Not all protein foods are created equal. Certain protein foods appeared to be better than others when it comes to preventing weight gain. Nuts, peanut butter, fish, yogurt and low-fat cheese were associated with weight loss while red meat and processed meat were associated with weight gain.
Eggs and cheese aren’t necessarily diet-busters. These foods were only associated with weight gain if the diet’s glycemic load was also high.
High glycemic load diets were worse for weight loss. Foods with a high glycemic load (think white bread, potatoes, soda) were associated with weight gain. A diet with a higher GL ranking is positively associated with weight gain. In fact, a 50-unit increase in daily glycemic load (about two bagels) resulted in a 1-pound weight gain every 4 years.
The type of protein consumed worked in combination with GL to affect weight. For example, someone who eats a high glycemic load diet plus a lot of red/processed meat would gain more weight than if he ate a low glycemic load diet with the same amount of red/processed meat.
Keep in mind that the results of this study are “associations” meant to show relationships between diet quality and weight gain or loss. This does not confirm that particular diet types cause weight gain or loss. Nonetheless, these relationships are still important, given that we’re looking at a large group of participants over the course of decades.
What’s the Takeaway?
This study confirms that the quality of your diet matters for keeping your weight in check over a long period of time. A balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables will help you maintain a low glycemic load. Choosing lean protein sources like chicken, fish, nut butter and low-fat cheese will reduce the amount of fat—particularly saturated fat—in your diet. Both glycemic load and protein type are indicators of your diet quality, and will affect your weight.
It’s apparent that a calorie is not a calorie in this case, so do calories still count when it comes to weight loss? The answer is a resounding Yes! Even though the study focused on diet quality, this is just one factor out of many that affect our weight. To be successful at maintaining a healthy weight, both the number of calories consumed and the quality of those calories matters.

Methinks you are way overestimating calories burned. Way. Don't go off the machines.
Running (not on a treadmill) nets about 100 calories per mile.
Did you run 5.5 miles in 30 minutes? That's like averaging 11mph or running a sub 6 minute mile for (5.5 consecutive miles)

Not quite. Caloric expenditure is a function of oxygen consumption. Running is less efficient than walking in that it consumes more oxygen than say walking to move the same mass the same distance. On average running burns 30-50% more calories than walking does. Mass also plays a role in the number of calories burnt in a given exercise. That is why men tend to burn more calories on average (around 20%) than women (the 100/hr figure that you shared) A mass of just 15% or so above average would yield the shared results.

It was 100 per mile distance not per hour.
And yes your weight does play a role. 100 cal/mile is a reasonable average estimate. A small woman is going to burn less (ie less than 100 calories a mile) than an obese 6'3" man (more than 100 calories a mile).
At the end of the day, the estimated 'calorie burn' by exercise equipment is always grossly exaggerated.

Yeah, I got that it was per mile. The /hr was just out of habit (I deal with units/hr too much). You're good, don't worry.

It's pretty substantial too especially given a standard deviation of around 20% and a normal distribution. At 14km/hr for example it's around 3.5 more per kg of mass. Height plays a role too. The 100/mile number would apply to a 6' tall 140lb male. It's the reason many machines ask for your height/weight ^^

At the end of the day, the estimated 'calorie burn' by exercise equipment is always grossly exaggerated.
Definitely, but as long as you're improving what you're doing on the equipment that's a real gain and no machine stats gonna mess that up :p
I aim for 1000 a session as the machines tell me but I'm sure it's 10-20% over what I've actually burnt.

I know very few people who can consistently get anywhere close to 1000 real calories a session. But you're right in that all anyone can hope for is improvement on what you did in the past.
To be honest, if your goal is weight loss (else why worry about calories burned), that starts and ends in the KITCHEN.
When I train its for strength, speed or endurance alone. If the goal is to gain or lose weight, success/failure is dictated by what I put in my face.

More like 50-70%.
Running a mile on the road is a far cry from running on a treadmill.
As long as you're improving on you're old performance, that's all that matters.

Just waiting for the weather to warm up, always been an outdoor runner in the summer (definitely sweat more and the pace isn't set by a machine) - training to hopefully move up from 10k (6 mile) events up to 10 mile ones this summer.
They say if you run 10 miles in training regularly that it's enough to cover a half marathon event.

Another 1100 calories down...and made it to my next goal on the treadmill.
Treadmill: 35 minutes @ 12.6 km/h (590 calories)
Bike: 25 minutes with intervals (210 calories)
Cross-trainer: 15ish minutes (250 calories)
Treadmill walking with an incline to warm down (50 calories)
Up to 12.8km/h next session, probably not going to do that at the first attempt.

Still needing a 2 minute break trying to do the 12.8km/h on the treadmill but working on it.
Today the sun was out and I did my first outdoor 10 mile run of the year, loaded up on some vitamin D while I was out there ;)

Last session in the gym I managed to hit 12.8km/h for 35 minutes with no breaks, hitting the milestone of 13km/h today...again probably not at the first attempt but we'll see.
Get yourselves down to the gym, out on the streets or wherever and burn some calories. If you're not sweating, you're not working hard enough!
See if you can burn more calories than the plat you earn on elf sim tonight ^^

“O-o-! Ooooooooooooh~♥” moaned Miku pleasurably. “Aww, wooooooooooow~♥” moaned Thomas happily. They both drooled as Thomas started to play around inside of Miku. In a matter of seconds, Thomas pumped his driving rod into Miku's piston harder than Thumper could ever have hoped to dream of pounding anything. They both sweated immensely and clung to each other as they did their dirty work. “Ooooh.... oh my god.... oh my god.... oooh god~♥!” moaned Miku as she breathed heavily. “Oh man, oh man, oh man... ooooooh, yeah~♥! Oh, that feels good!” moaned Thomas as he breathed heavily. They both started to twitch to and fro and breath even harder. “Oh god, Miku~♥!” moaned Thomas in immense pleasure, “I think my whistle's gonna blow!” But Thomas wasn't talking about his own two whistles up THERE... He was talking about the 'whistle' down THERE!

building fat is good for survival. natural selection win
It only makes sense if you build it up and burn it off in cycles, not endlessly accumulate it like some kind of doomsday hoarder and canned peaches...ET ain't gonna ruin the neighborhood though. Your fat is useless and your new name is peaches...
