Howdy,

I was curious if there are semi-popular servers around for early FFXI. I've heard the latest expansions and the live game violate several of the core tenets that, in my view, made the game great.

Are there any servers comparable to the official-ness, competence, or population of P99?

Thanks,

Got it. Looks like Nasomi is healthy and running. Low pop and a bit buggy but not really fair to judge by P99 standards ;) The set up is unreal though. I thought P99 set up was hard!

http://nasomi.com Is the official website. The wiki instructions, http://nasomi.com/wiki/doku.php?id=new:first-time, are critical and significantly better than the website, and there is a Facebook groups named similarly.

I wonder why more people aren't interested in private classic FFXI servers.

There are a few, but Nasomi seems to be the best one in terms of being close-ish to classic compared to the others.

I'm curious as well, I don't know enough about the game to determine how far it's drifted from its classic self. Here is a fun advancement though. FFXI on tablets!

Edit: embedded link seems to have failed, it's a picture from the FFXI Nasomi Facebook page showing FFXI running on a tablet (working on fps).

Because there is already p99, and ffxi was just a really generic version of EQ. It was mostly for console players and those with extreme final fantasy fetish. Everyone else wanted to pull their hair out running around that cheesy world at eq walk speeds and enduring combat where you swing once every 5-10 seconds and get to use a special ability like once a minute.

I still enjoyed it more than new mmos, but it was a far cry from EQ in terms of quality.

I had no idea any of them even existed! Which also reminds me about that Vanguard emu project mentioned on these forums some time ago.

because the controls are shit for an mmo and this is coming from someone who played ffXI back in the day. Don't play an unless you have a controller to use.

I miss classic FFXI more than anything, but Nasomi is still a far cry from real classic FFXI in a lot of ways, and the population doesn't compare to what's here on P99.

There is full keyboard layout or compact 1 and compact 2 layout. I used to play with keyboard with no issues and currently playing with a pad.

takes forever to install because of the patcher and stuff, but once you get in its really easy to login etc.

if you end up getting on, send me a PM so i can help you with graphics settings. Default graphics/fps compared to what is possible by changing certain settings makes the game look amazing.

I came to terms with being weak willed this morning when I realized there's just way too much work to put into this on this server. So I found another one with a lot of quality of life stuff added as well as custom content post lvl 75. Feels a lot like what Shards of Dalaya is compared to Project 1999. It's called LegionDark and that's where I've decided to sow some roots.

They seem to get about 100 or so people on prime time. Not bad.

I mean I'm not going to dispute that but I'm not prepared for the classic FFXI grind ya know?

I'm super interested in those graphic tweaks though. Shit's a lot more grainy than I remember it.

Careful. Those arguments, that combat takes too long and needs speeding up, or that you traverse the world too slowly, are exactly the same aeguments that kids use today to claim that EQ is objctively worse than modern mmos.

I dont know which launcher you use, but make sure you set all the resolutions to the native on your monitor. Change the "Background Resolution" to 2x your native resolution. (1920x1080 multiplied by 2 for each respective number). That is the main thing that will improve your graphics.

Again, I don't know if you use ashita, but try /fps 1 once you log in and /drawdistance setworld 5 /drawdistance setmob 5

I did some google-fu and ended up doing the whole registry edit thing to get it looking pretty. The background resolution to twice native resolution was fucking MASSIVE. I'll try out the drawdistance tweaks here in a little bit, thanks for the tip mrgoochio!

Yeah I edited my registry as well, but FFXI seems to run in 30fps capped so /fps 1 will limit your FPS to 60. when you go above 60fps all the animations get wonky so even though I have a 120hz monitor I run at 60capped. With the drawdistance up a bit and the background textures 2x and 60fps, this game looks amazing for its age. Looks like a modern title to me, albeit some of the ground textures aren't that great. The art style is really amazing in this game though

There is a difference between realistically slow, and ffxi slow. I could walk backwards faster in real life than players run in ffxi. It was fucking retarded.

And eq combat was slower paced, but still fast enough to be challenging and full of strategy. ffxi on the other hand was just like watching paint dry.

Can't mod draw distance, bro. Nasomi has specifically stated that in the past. I'd ask him just to be sure that hhasn't changed though

idk I didn't have to enable anything to make drawdistance work. Just had to type /drawdistance setworld <number> in-game. in any case, i'll check out the nasomi wiki/faq. Thanks for the heads up

Windower development is under way but at this time no. Keep in mind, most plugins and add-on's are not permitted. Timestamp, recast, distance, fps are about it.

Looks like we good to go :D Quoted by nasomi
