View Full Version : Best Console / Handheld RPG's

So I'm recovering from a nasty cold and I'm bored of all pc games, and I want to play a cozy old console RPG. There are some highly-praised classics I've never played, like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 3(6). I also never managed to finish Super Mario RPG as a kid because my fucking Mom always took it back to the rental place before I was done so I might do that again. Also intrigued by the Fire Emblem series but I don't even know where to start there. Baldurs Gate / NWN aren't consoles but I'm throwing them in there because I haven't played them and I dunno how they compare.

What's the best of these titles? Any recommendations?

I've already played FF7 and most other major titles except those listed in the poll.

FFT has a special place in my heart because it blends a fantastic story (best on your list imo*) with tactical combat. It's beautiful for a PS1 title and the job system character development lets you somewhat mix and match abilities for unique-ish characters.

And if you play it on an emulator, there's a really popular difficulty mod for it I've been wanting to check out. If you haven't played this, please do.

*Haven't played Fire Emblems.

Final Fantasy 2 was really good. It was probably the best RPG I ever played when I was a kid. Great story, and fun! Tons of good memories for sure! :)

Final Fantasy 6 for SNES is my all time favorite RPG. It really is amazing how much story and characters they could cram into a 16-bit game. Only game to ever make me cry, it's got some powerful moments. FF6>FF7 Ive always felt this way, and FF7 is great...just not as great as all the things FF6 did on SNES, years before.

You forgot the Dragon Quest series! The Nintendo DS Versions, which are the ones ported onto Android (not sure about iOS, but more than likely), are phenominal. Currently have Dragon Quest IV installed on my phone, and it's great.

(Also, Baldur's Gate okay but don't bother/waste your time with NWN2. As a western RPG enthusiast, it was a terrible game.)

Played Chrono trigger and FF3 tons as kid and still enjoy FF3 more. Also can include Secret of Mana in there as a game i enjoyed as a child. They are all very good games i just enjoyed FF3 more.

Noted. I have never gone back to play FF3 (played the rest) so maybe on this feedback I'll check it out someday.

I think what makes Chrono Trigger interesting is it was a one-off, albeit highly successful and received critical acclaim up there with the FF7 anime nutcases. Think there was a kickstarter by a group to produce a new one/ update it for 2016.

Secret of Mana can't hang with Trigger in the ranks tho.

Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars is the last game developed by Square for Nintendo. It is deep and includes all of the best RPG elements you'd expect as well as some skill involving ultmates.

Another good less known RPG is Secret of Evermore.

This as well. I have mentioned Legends of the Seven Stars on several occasions in OT threads.

Big game big RPG. Fun as fuck. Not a better RPG than Chrono Trigger, but 10x more fun if that makes sense.

I'd actually suggest playing this first. Man that game brings such strong nostalgia so many memorable settings and plotlines. BOYER NYAAA!!!!!! Training with the master, etc. Back when Square was actually Square and gave a fuck with talented people. Today they publish and develop shit games like the modern take on the Hitman franchise (disgustingly bad for 60 dollars).

I wanted a sequel to Seven so bad, but I think we ended up getting Paper Mario. Paper Mario was ok...you remember Jay Rippo? lol.

don't bother/waste your time with NWN2. As a western RPG enthusiast, it was a terrible game.)
It was buggy when it came out. Like game stopping bug, where you couldnt finish the first dungeon over some chest loot bug part of the story line. Yeah I got it on release day, had to wait for a patch. NWN1 had a lot going for it, but over all, especially with what was put into it over time, I like NWN2 better ...well pc version anyway. I even picked up the last box release with 1 & 2 and all expansions. I still play it, but not this year yet.

Probably best out there now for handheld is minecraft pe. It's been #1 at google play since release... looong time. It's more like the pc version now (have had pc version since early beta), getting there. Though heven't played it much recently because space engineers hah ...though only pc. Not enough sandbox games outside of pc.

Dragon Quest 3 SFC(SNES)(English Translation if you cant read Japanese)(any of the DQ series honestly)

Icewind Dale 1 + 2 (I prefer them to Baulders)

Lands of Lore (First person dungeon crawler) (Or Eye of the beholder)

Secret of Monkey Island Series (Or any of the classic click adventures by the old LucasArts)

Black & White (You get to be a God!)

Banjo-Kazooie (N64 3d plat-former, Mario 64 level of excellence)

My list of recommended games can go on for a extensive time. I guess i'll cut the list very short here. Just a few games off the top of my head.

Yea lots of good memories of this game, just a solid fun RPG.

I'm a few hours deep in Suikoden 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 6, and Super Mario RPG but Suikoden 2 is really capturing most of my attention at this point and I think I'll finish that and move on to FF6 next.

oh i see handhelds are up for grabs.. well tehse gameboy games are the bawmb:

Gargoyals Quest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3oWNm563H4) - Made as a spin off of "whos that demon that steels the princess from Ghost n Goblins"
Final Fantasy Adventure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di5Vhk3AEUc) - Great zelda meets final fantasy game. And by great i mean fucking awesome.
Final Fantasy Legend (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbkQ-LMDPT4) - All in the series are all great. Dat music cant be beat.

Game Gears Dragon Crystal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_on3KhMK-Q) was fucking FANTASTIC and must be played by any collector of vintage Jrpg's. Its got a lot of solid mixing american RPG and Jrpg's that make it really unique.
Defenders of the Oasis - Super unique jrpg themed like AlQadin from SSI.. aka Arabian Nights. You wont find a game like this anywhere else.
If Dragon Warrior style is your.. Style... then Crystal Warriors (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ylN6ASyjeE) may be the game for you.. only for the truely vintage game fans though.
lmao Axe Battler (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB8LyyYoUj8) was a game I found at a second hand shop once and in a pinch, is really nostalgic and awesome.

Im gonna cut this list short and add my favorite zelda game of all time, best played on a GBA adapter on a game cube so you can see it on your big screen tv in all its glory, or at least an emulator: The Legend of Zelda the Minish Cap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMfJM1Acpzo&nohtml5=False) a Capcom made zelda game that is just truely well exicuted. If you like Snes zelda, if you like Windwaker art, then this is the game 4 u.

http://i.imgur.com/e2uYcjO.png

This list can go on and on and on, there are still more handhelds than games I listed in this post, each with a torrent of games of thier own! Good thread.

Oh and OP, NWN2? It's not on console or handheld, not even android for android consoles and handhelds. It's just on Win/Mac. Anyway, NWN2 needs mods and player made add-ons to make it really good, which isn't a thing for most console and handhelds.

Personally among all the traditional console and handhelds I like PSP, though still lacks sandbox games and popular modding games. I'd be more tempted to get a PSP if there were better racing games and that use analog rather than d-pad, and that have decent smooth graphics like littlebigplanet or force unleashed. Ah but if I were into eastern games I'd be set. Probably of your list other than other, I'd play mario. But more about just liking super mario on nes, the rest of the mario franchise hasn't kept my attention.

I think the writing in SMrpg is the best as far as jrpgs go.. it was a comedy and at a lot of times a parody of Jrpg tropes, so there were some really funny and really clever lines in it :)

This is my sentiments. It was Chrono then Super Mario RPG.

U can see Chrono doing numbers in this thread. But surprised its not a landslide. A lot of people didn't play it.

FF just wasn't as immersive or fun to me. That "blown away" feeling was missing from FF. Too Japanese anime based probably.

FF is mostly for anime-philes. Chrono and Super Mario are a slight departure from that.

That's true. I skipped FF3 because it didn't feel big to me at first or epic enough. Just not much of an 8 bit guy I guess.

16 bit brought expansive epic worlds to life and that's what I was attracted the most to. I mean Chrono was slick and stylized, but Super Mario RPG was like "holy fuck this game is 16 bit??" It was def cutting edge.

FF6/3 is in many ways the best JRPG of its era. Chrono Trigger was awesome too and they are closely tied however the sheer number of characters, quests, and secrets in FF6 made it feel much more "epic" than Chrono Trigger.

I was playing all of these JRPGs in the 90s as they were coming out and I have to say when FF7 came out it drew a lot of people to the genre due to the way it was marketed and it being for the Playstation. I played it through many times and it is a fucking awesome game but because I had played 6 first I never thought it was plainly a "better" game.

In the early-mid 90s I was chastised for liking JRPGs because they were "gay" and when I was playing FF1 on NES my friends were like "dude why do you play that gay game where the dudes are in boxes and you don't even control them." All it took was some marketing and a popular game system to bring a bunch of new people to the genre. Shit, even a lot of my game nerd friends had to play "catchup" because they missed all the SNES JRPGs that came out before FF7.

Anyways, if you haven't played FF6, play it. The best way to play is to get a customized GBA FF6 Advance ROM but with the original SNES music tracks hacked in. The GBA sound hardware wasn't true to the original (amazing) soundtrack and a lot of the instruments are fucked.

Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, FFTactics, all fucking awesome - but play FF6 if you haven't. Its what a JRPG should be.

Its not as good. I wouldn't compare them.

I went into Paper Mario after I had been waiting with stressl for a successor to Super Mario RPG.

I was disappointed, didn't even finish the game but my brother did enjoy it and played the sequel. I got a laugh out of Jay Rippo's deals, that's about my only enjoyment I had there. No nostalgia for me.

Super Mario RPG on the other hand, was a way of life in my neighborhood at one point. We banged the shit out of that game for what felt like over 2 weeks. I have no idea how many gameplay hours it has, I guess it depends on how you play. I felt like we got a full month of the craze going.

I want a new EQ game that looks like this:

And I want to feel like that guy when I go into dungeons again.

And I want to fail at dungeons until you're like level 30 becuse they're basically impossible.

Is that game DS3?

I want it to be persistant world like EQ tho :(

But yea I want it to look & feel exactly like this:

idk man chrono trigger... it was the first official "too much shit to keep track of in this game" square game IMO

I personally think FF2 is the best of their games.. it has all of the things I love about FF but its simplified in a way that doesn't make it feel, bloated or convoluted... which FF3 feels to me.. 3 is just 2 with more shit everywhere... Even the art feels more 'gritty' to me than 2.. it crosses the line somewhere from cartoony simplified imagry to trying to be real? but still cartoony? and gritty?

idk... 3 just made me start to think that graphics are getting too good for my taste.

Honestly I think chronotriger is to FF3 as FF3 is to FF2.. So for me that makes it even worse. \

Not that I didnt enjoy the game.

Does it have to be an MMO?

I could maybe recommend some single player RPGs from the late 90's early 2000's where you get the shit beat out of you, that has an extremely strong EQ "Open world" adventure feel to it with no pointer arrows for quests, basically "you figure it the fuck out yourself" type of quests.. Perhaps even more open world than EQ itself (single have better world design on average)

damn those manga cutscenes hold up extremely well. More games from that era would have been better served to make use of that style.

Even today, some "live-action" cutscenes look like shit in 2016 compared against the manga style.

I remember cringing at the Max Payne 3 cutscenes.

Persona encouraged me to stop looking to Japan for entertainment.

Lol fair enough. It's getting harder to find jrpg that aren't strategy games as I go up the generations of consoles. Most seem to go the monster hunter/kingdom hearts route of controlling which while is fun isn't as fun to me. Even new ff15 looks to go that route. Any recommendations for later gen consoles ? Seems most rpg are on the vita unfortunately maybe I should get a ps TV .
