A moment of madness came over me... not played anything "Nintendo" in probably a decade or more. Worth? Anyone own one?

(nothing will convince me to get a Wii U)

No.

But if you must explore, try an emu first?
Also, I can condone linux/android.
Linux runs on PC, android does too, and is pref to develop on the PC for android apps to make $$ for buying a better PC. Yes, android is PC's whore :)

idk, the games didn't look too crazy from what I've seen, although there was one a friend of mine had gotten that had a weird monster-fighting or trading feature where it'd sense other people within a certain radius of you playing the game too. Aside from that I think the thing I was most impressed with by the one my friend owned was that they used it as an old game emulator, but any android phone can do that too.

I snagged a 3ds other day. Sons bday tomorrow and got him pokemon blue(the original) for his 3ds and decided to pick one up and get Pokemon Red and we can trade and battle together. Looked through the eshop on his 3ds and saw tons of games i enjoyed as a child on gameboy/snes that i am probably going to buy. I have all of them on emulators already but playing on a phone or tablet without real buttons just isnt the same.

Pretty fun, especially if you like the Pokemon Series. Omega Ruby seems like a huge departure from original Red/Blue, but it has it's own draw. Plus other titles like Mario Kart, Mario, Animal Crossing, etc. It's even better if you've got a couple of buds to play with or live in an urban area with lots of people around you. The Street Pass portion of it is really quite neat and fun for a lot of games.

Plus it's great for those camps with 10+ min spawn timers. Gives you something to do while you wait.

I almost bought one a few years ago actually. When the 3ds xl was coming out. I got a nexus 6 tablet instead, couldn't be happier and use it every day (and have a NES emu on it :D ). I still have an old ds someone gave me, but rarely use it, just when I want to screw around with lego games once in a while.

3ds is really a well rounded portable gaming device

They just re release Ocarina of Time, that's reason enough alone not to mention the other zelda titles among many other titles such as

Super Smash Bros
Link Between Worlds
Ocarina of Time(as stated above)
Majora's Mask
Fire Emblem - Awakening
Attack On Titan Game
Mario Kart
Super Mario 3D
Bravely Default
My personal favorite as of late Monster Hunter 4!

I have been doing a lot of traveling as of late (work related so not fun travel) and this thing comes in clutch man, imo it's worth to have.

If you like Japanese games definitely.
