Hello all. Plan on rolling a character here this weekend. New to EQ but have played similar games. I read a bunch of 'choosing your class' guides and since they all had something a little different to say on some things I figured I would get some input here.
Basically I want a character that is flexible. I want a character that is cheap to gear and doesn't require advanced knowledge of the game to get by, can be good solo or in groups, and has enough flexibility to let me see a lot of the game. I'm not concerned with rushing to end game or efficient exp grinding. I don't want to do necro my first time through because of faction issues, I'll probably roll a necro alt later. I prefer DD spells to DoT but am not ruling out classes that rely on the latter. Between shaman, druid, magician, and wizard, which class would fit this bill the closest?

From what you put, looks like you might have the most fun playing a druid. Can DD, Heal, SoW, Buff, DS, and eventually port. Very versatile and flexible class able to fulfill many roles and always welcomed in a group. Ability to solo at low levels when you can't find a group is very nice as well!
Actually I may have just convinced myself to make a druid-alt eventually, but for now going full HAM with my warrior.
Welcome to EQ P99! It's a bit more brutal than current MMOs today, but it makes every level and item seemed well-earned!

Druid is likely going to fit the bill. As mentioned above, it's a hybrid class that is welcome in groups and is able to solo. Considered one of the "easier" classes as they are pretty well rounded. They get teleports later on that can make you some easy money/travel options. They can solo, act as healers in casual groups, have some great buffs and some really good utility spells.
That being said, I feel like a Shaman would be more useful high end, but it's not always about the destination and really comes down to what you'd prefer to play.

Agreeing with the above posters... a druid as your first class will probably serve you best!

Necro isn't that bad for faction. As an iksar necro with 4 bonechip turn ins you can use the evil guild in East Freeport Tunnels. You can bank using invis, wall trick, feign death. You can use Oggok and Grobb with Call of Bones. Or you can do Gnome Necro and be kind of tolerated

Welcome! Any class you play has it's pros and cons, but the faction probably isn't as big of an issue as you may think.

Thanks for the answers dudes. Druid does seem like it would be a good time! Will probably get started this weekend.

The magician is a great first character choice. You are great solo, but even better as a duo. You need no gear other than spells. And you can be a human or a gnome, two races with good starting areas AND that ain't kill on sight all over the world. The same applies to necromancers of these races: a human necro is welcome pretty much all over the place, barring paladin guilds.
Erudite is also an option, but yeah, their starting zone is as bad as it gets.

If you prefer DD over DoTs and you want to solo and group, then Mage is really your only option that fits that criteria. And Like fugazi mentioned they are one of the best starter classes. High Elf is also a very good option for Mage, but really Mage is the least dependent on race than any other class in the game so you can't go wrong.

I have to say, I'm really happy with my Human Druid so far. It is certainly worth giving a shot!

Ah, okay, haha. I've been considering heading that way to hit the orc belt turn-in missions that I've heard so much about. I'm currently over in Qeynos for now, though. ^.^
