View Full Version : Expected Armor Classes

When the EQ developers were designing the game, they obviously had certain statistics for the players in mind when designing mobs and encounters. Did they ever hint at what the developer's expectations were for AC (or any other stat for that matter) for players at a given level and class at least for Classic? I'm sure they were able to data mine what was actually happening in game and I wonder how that met with their expectations.

There used to be some sort of set values available for all the expansions and the recommended AC "softcap" anything higher would give diminishing returns.

I'm not exactly sure but from vague memory I believe the classic soft cap was between 950 and 1050.

Maybe someone can find the old posts that had the list (at least all the way through PoP iirc).

cheers!

I would love yo know this for the tank classes, to be able to mitigate damage effectively.

From what I understand, this is how it was at least before AC was reworked in Secrets of Faydwer:

Soft Caps:

Cloth/Druid..........= ~75 worn AC
Leather......= ~100 worn AC
Monk..........= ~120 worn AC
Chain.........= ~200 worn AC
Plate .........= ~300 worn AC

^^^

Above numbers are correct for classic. it SHOULD be a different cap for each armor-type wearing class.

returns after the soft caps are met vary by class and getting solid info on how it was is next to impossible:

45%: Warrior
33%: SK / Paly
33%: Monk (not certain)
20-25%: Cleric / Bard (estimate)
5-7%: cloth casters /druids

Don't quote me on these as they are not my numbers and I have no clue how things are done on this server. It's more to give you a general idea of how things work with AC numbers.

Wow, 300 AC is ridiculously low for plate classes.

Yeah, AC soft cap is reached pretty early on.

It's 300 worn AC. It only counts the AC numbers written on your gear.

For example: A warrior wearing a full set of Crafted, and nothing else, has 108 worn AC. That's 192 AC under the cap.

that worn AC is the sum of the actual AC values on your armor, not what your AC value shows in game.

ive never understood ac in eq. ide be fancy to know if anybody had a solid legit link or answer as to what a "soft cap" is in terms of level of toon to level of mob (taking into mind resists/sta/etc) outside of the typical "palys/sk's make better 5 man tanks warriors rule raids lulz!"

Correct, I probably should have added the term "worn AC".

I just assumed that based on the low numbers people would figure it out. :o

All the "soft cap" means is that's when the you receive a 1-to-1 benefit from worn AC. After that, you receive a x%-to-1 benefit, based on your class and armor type.

As for the calculations, you'd have to look into the code for an exact answer.

There were no soft caps through SoV. Every class got the same benefit from AC up to a certain point and then they got none at all but they could keep stacking AC to combat debuffs etc.

Soft caps per class came in between Luclin and PoP after the problem with monks hitting the cap during Velious from inflated AC values on leather armor.

Does this server even use the oldschool caps? Figured they might just have left the titanium mechanics as they were instead of going and tweaking them when it'd largely be guesswork anyways.
