I figured I'd take the time before I went down to play my show to make a thread in accordance to new players that will be joining us on the project 1999 server.
A lot of people are confused about the questing system and the best way to level up or find quests that are "important".. Mainly players I've been trying to recruit.
I was hoping some of the veterans or others could inform me so I could inform them!
The general questions were..
1. I'm just starting out, and I have no idea where to go or what to do first? I explain to them to level up and do quests! They need more specifics.. I have even wondered myself about questing, but a lot of people say EQ was a lot of grinding and no questioning. Is this true?
2. Is there a better system to begin tradeskilling or general benefits of leveling at a low level? I don't know what to tell them to expect when starting.. I dunno if they like the idea of just killing bats for 5 hours to get level 4 :P
3. What's the best advice you can give the newcomers? What can you tell them to expect? What's the hardest hurdle to get over until it's insanely fun?

Hello there!
Well for starter/turn-in quests there are a few that are excellent.
Greater Faydark/Butcherblock area:
1.) Bone Chips - Give to Gunlok Jure in Kaladim's Paladin guild hall (4 at a time not stacked) - Gives good XP, random items and faction
2.) Crushbone Belts/Shoulder Pads - Give to Canloe Nusbak in Kaladim's Warrior guild - Great XP, random items and faction
Qeynos area:
1.) Gnoll Fangs - Get gnoll fangs off the gnolls in the Qeynos Hills area and turn them in 1 at a time to Captain Tillin in the Qeynos Warriors guild. GREAT XP and faction. As well you get a moonstone that can either be sold or turned in to a merchant at an inn by the docks (cant remember which) for a little more XP and a bottle of booze.
The Bone-Chips and Crushbone Belts/Pads can be sold to other players for money. The Bone-chips sell for appx 5pp per stack of 20 while the Belts sell for 1-2pp each. The shoulder pads can sell for 3-5pp each.
Also there are always craftsmen that are looking for Spiderling silk which can sell for appx 20pp per stack of 20. The spiderling's poison is a bit overpowered so be warned but the money can be very helpful.
So there are a few quests that can get a player started with both money and XP. I am sure there are a few more but these seem to be the most popular.
Good luck!

First thing to do is get what you know about mmos out of your head. EverQuest classic is not your hand holding walk you through everything type of game.
You need some think skin, dont think its the end of the word when you die a couple times on corpse recovery.
There isnt a chain of quests to get you from 1 - 50, quests can be hard to find infact. You need to actually speak to NPC's and respond in a way that will progress the chat "no hitting continue / accept"
Just get out there kill some large rats/bats/snakes/skels and welcome to the community!!
Oh and level 3 sucks for int casters!!! ;-(

What's the hardest hurdle to get over until it's insanely fun?
This is a trick question.
Everquest never becomes fun.
It's hard, and it wants you to screw up so that it can make you run for an hour between mobs that could kill you while you're geared.
Verant was full of griefers who hated their playerbase. Unfortunately for them, we liked the challenge. Don't get it twisted tho, this game is not fun. There is a game like that already (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml), however.

Bahaha.
Well to some of us, I can agree that it is FUN.
As far as the other questions go I do appreciate all the responses.. I'll try and get my group rolling.
I have to wait for my IP approval to get my friends with me sadly at my house.
Best advice I can give is for new players to take their time. If you rush you'll only end up disappointing yourself. So, explore your home town, hail every NPC you see, etc

When you first log on you should familiarize yourself with your starting city. There are no magical lines to appear to show you were stuff is. You'll need to hand your note to your class guildmaster to get a shirt.
If you have spells, open up your spellbook and memorize them. After that go to the area right outside the guards and start killing animals. You can get your first few levels within a safe distance of the guards. If you get overwhelmed you can always run back to them.
You'll be too poor to do much tradeskilling at first. Kill animals, loot them, sell the stuff to merchants. You'll discover some things are worth a whole lot more than others. Get money, but some basic cloth/leather armor, and buy backpacks.
There aren't thousands of quests to mask the XP grind. There are some very fun quests, but there is no system where you can run around and get like 10 quests and then go complete them. This game is fun because you have to work with others to accomplish things

Yeah adding on what everyone else has says. This is a very hard game, but Hasbin is wrong, it's a very fun game also. This game rewards even the smallest tasks. There will be some days where all you do is die and lose experience, and the day is a good day if you can even get your corpse back. But those are few and far between.
My advice is to stay close to your starting city if you can, learn the noob areas and try and figure out where everything is. Keep mental notes or even write down what certain NPC's sell or do. if you think about making a run to a really far away place, just consider where you are bound (where you pop up after death) and consider how hard it might be to get back to your corpse.
Quests are few and far between also, but there are some great ones. I rarely do quests because unless it's for a good item I feel my time is spent better grinding or grouping and getting to know other players. Friends are way better to have in EQ than in any MMO, so make friends fast and keep them.

Very good tips!
I'll try to tell them to keep all of this in mind! Me and my friends are going to try and run through a bunch of stuff together.. I'll be doing druid still obviously.. the other friend is a rogue.. and im not sure about my other.. but I'll explain the basics!
Weve been doing BB lately just killing fodder over and over.. not getting anywhere yet though

As far as the gnoll fangs go in the qeynos/Black Burrow area. Don't hand them in in Qeynos unless you just want the faction. Hand them in to the warrior trainer in halas and get the same amount of exp +5 gold per fang. Also you can do the quest in qeynos to kill the little fish in the water under the paladin guild hall. Kill the fish loot it and hand the item to the guard that walks around the pool. Beware this quest will destroy faction rather quickly. If you are doing this quest make sure you don't go below dubious with the guards/merchants. If you get to dubious you can hand in gnoll fangs to Captain Tillin to get the faction back up. Doing these quests in conjunction with eachother can get you from 1-10 in a matter of about 5-6 hours depending on how lucky you get on gnoll fang drops.

My best advice for any new Norrathians is to play nice, EQ always had a great community, lend a helping hand and it will come back to you. Buff low players, lend a helping hand, this is what made this game great.

Oh no! No no no no no!
My friend! You and your brethren are about to embark on adventure that I daresay may never be recreated! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity... Please, I beg of you! Do not befoul your experience with pre-conceived notions and mountains of hard data. Allow yourself to be lost, to be scared and to be enthralled. Do not rely solely on the information of others. Take your time. Hail some wandering souls and enjoy the.journey. This is not a digital foot race, my brother. It is an unmatched and, dare I say, unrivaled experience. Enjoy it.

I didn't even look at the dates.
Hope they figured the game out...
A few random tips from the P99 staff (or just myself):
1. EverQuest is, above all other things, a community game. Unlike other more current MMOs, the community is small, tight knit, and remembers things. Your name will carry a reputation, good or bad, which is entirely up to you. There is no name changing to escape a bad rep here (*cough* WoW).
2. Because it's a community game, making friends is what makes the game both sustainable and fun. Grinding up to 60 without friends would be either painful or impossible, perhaps both. Don't just rely on your small group of family/friends, branch out, join a guild, and help others out as much as they help you (if not more).
3. Play the race and class you *want* to play, not what is "good" or "OP." In EverQuest, unlike other MMOs, the classes are not balanced, at all. And in some cases that is on purpose. Rangers are laughed at by most other classes for being completely useless, but the people who play them swear by them, and rightfully so. So play what's fun and not what's "needed." You won't regret it.

My advices? Forget about leveling via quests. Everquest is pure leveling through grinding. However, unlike Korean games, it can be quite challenging at times. Be aware that unlike modern games, Everquest won't allow all classes to solo their way up through levels. Actually, only few can do it. So make sure to at least pick a class which will match your playing style (can it solo? is it good enough for duo? will I want to only group?). It also takes a loooong time to level up when you don't know exactly how to do it. So be prepared for it, which means ask as much as you can about your class, and how it should be properly done to minimize the grinding madness.
In short, Everquest's fun lies within it's challenging frame. However, the game is much more welcoming with many veterans who now know most of the important things, therefore it will be easier than it was on Live. Well, at least until you hit the raiding scene. For me, it was fun on Live, not at all here. But being able to relive memories was a blast.

Just explore the world, don't get too hung up on leveling and getting the best gear and don't be afraid to experiment and try new things. This server is so top heavy that there's a ton of nice folks available to bail you out of any tough spots such as an irretrievable corpse. You'll eventually get the hang of the game and the levels and the gear will come and you'll appreciate it all the more.
By the way, I'm extremely jealous of everyone who comes into this game never having played it before. I wish I could come into it again with fresh eyes.

Yes its a bit off topic but... thread is necro status anyway:
You guys misunderstand the definition of fun.
In the 3rd panel replace DF with EQ... put WoW in the first panel, and... I don't know... AC1 in the middle one.

EQ is a walk in a park. Just get immersed and be your class. Socialize. The point of the game is not really as achievement oriented as modern MMO's.
And much more on topic: Kuriak's Great Crusade (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=65001) <<< this thread sums up EQ from more virgin eyes, virgin to MMO.
Eventually they'll get good at the game and loose their immersion and be more interested in competition if that suites their personality... and then they can rage about raid FTE or reroll on Red.
