So I never played Original EQ. I was on the DAoC hype train and missed out. As such, my EQ experience comes exclusively from P99.

I've seen some older screenshots that display just how dark things were and read comments from people about how the lighting was a really important factor.

Does anyone know just why it's not like that here on P99? Was there a reason in particular?

I don't know if it's just because our computer technology is that much stronger now, but from the screenshots I saw it doesn't look like that's the case.

Reason 1: the client
Reason 2: you can adjust gamma

There were recently fixes so night vision on a human is much darker. (I'm still waiting for humans to start with their newbie candles, though!)

I play on an old Macbook via Wineskin, and nights certainly get quite dark, especially on my human characters and even on my characters with infravision. Adjusting the gamma in-game has no effect, and while I can change the gamma in the OS, it doesn't help much and makes everything else look awful. At times on my human/barbarian characters, it gets so bad I have to look up and find my way around via the stars. I rely heavily on spells and items which grant ultravision.

So, at least in my case, the dark nights are quite real.

Are fire beetle eyes and lightstones working for you guys? Mine lightstones and fire beetle eyes are giving off no light.

One thing I have noticed is that when I launch the client, my brightness/gamma goes up considerably. I haven't actually checked, but is there a way for me to turn this down?

I would like to experience Norrath in all it's gloomy glory. :)

Note: I'm at work right now so I can't check the client myself.

the gamma in EQ affects your entire PC ( while eq is running ) - I keep it at 21% to both emulate classic nightime and keep my desktop at the same level of brightness it normally is ( of course that will differ from pc to pc ) - funny thing, if you record EQ with fraps the gamma has no effect on the footage - it always looks like classic light levels, so lightstones and ultravision are super important for recording stuff! ( no one cares but me )
also I havn't noticed the titaniums night brightness kicking in as of late, dunno if they changed something or what

I remember in 99, when I started in Surefall Glade. Dark as F*CK, like black. Didn't get out of that place for like 20 minutes. Immediately died. Good times!

This.

I literally had to memorize every turn to get to and from Surefall in that cave when I had a source of light (like casting Halo of Light as a paladin, man was that spell useful). Same with the tunnel from Everfrost to Black Burrow. I would count the seconds, turn the proper degree left or right, move straight for a few seconds and repeat. Just became tedious casting the spell when I began remembering the path.

Roll Dark Elf. Ultravision will always be the best.

Looking up at zonelines to navigate by the sky. Walking backwards to Blackburrow so you can see the previous torches to navigate.... good times.

Good thread, up boated ^^b

Did t read beyond your OP, but to answer, they did fix it at one point, but everyone whined like little bitches and they reverted he change the same day :c It was pretty hardcore and took your whole puter into the dark world with it. Which I don't really think was bad, did t have all the resources we have now like p99 auctions and stuff back in 99

I quit my first barbarian because of how dark it was. I kept getting lost in the Halas tunnel exit spending 5 minutes zoning eachway into everfrost/halas.

Gamma settings and classic EQ darkness are entirely different things. Setting the former was just how we, as newb humans/erudites, compensated for being nearly blind at night.

Furthermore, classic infrasion was not just "lesser ultravision", it added a orange hue mobs/players at a distance. You can see it on the left in the screen shot below (I'm sure there are better examples to be found). It was very helpful since light sources only illuminated your immediate surroundings.

It's unfortunate, but the general consensus of our client-tinkerers seems to be that classic darkness isn't doable in the titanium client. Changing the gamma settings isn't going to replicate classic darkness any more then wearing sunglasses.

I hate to say it but the darkness is part of what made eq awesome back in the old days. I remember hanging out at the guard towers and waiting for the sun light. Its a lost part of the game for sure.

As long as titanium's weird night brightness doesn't kick in (seems to be random?) my night's are looking pretty dark and classic
