View Full Version : How old do you think you'll be before you stop playing Everquest?

Angushjalmur

I'm assuming the average player age is right around 30, which is -for most people- nearing the end of their physical prime. This of course is assuming you partake in frequent physical activity and haven't become a pale blob behind a computer screen. At what point do you put down the tarnished broad sword and settle down to have a family?

Bonus questions: Do you want a family? Do you think you're capable of finding a mate? And do you think it's possible to raise a family AND play Everquest?

the so-called terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 were orchestrated by President George W. Bush

Anyone actually remember playing EQ that day? I remember logging on later on that night and everyone was talking about it in /ooc and such. The first time i ever really saw a RL event take over the chat in EQ.

As far as OP. Started playing EQ at 16. Had first child at 17. Got married at 23. Second child at 24. 33 now and enjoying life for most part not playing EQ anymore. I still play plenty of other video games though.Been a blob(built like a offensive lineman) since high school(6'2 and have hovered between 275-300 for the last 17 years.)

Stopped at 29. Will never play again as EQ requires time to succeed. Just doesn't mix with me.

I WANT to log in, but its purposeless.

Not as fluffy. Plenty of girls loved me for piggyback rides and cuddling though. I played baseball and football in school so i wasnt the usual computer dork i just like food. Had friends in all the circles. Worked out well as i always had something to do.

Oh, I agree, it is a great discussion topic, it just runs astray of forum tradition. Polls always include a bsh/twr option. That is why Big J responded as he did. He was casting his vote. Here is an excerpt of the applicable statue:

II. Let no man, nor woman, nor combination thereof issue upon the people a poll in good faith remiss in the ways that are good and are right, having failed full and fair endorsement in negligence of proper poll construction and omission of the time-honored Bush/Towers (bush/twr) poll option.

OP is greatly overestimating the shelf life of a nostalgia server.

A lot of people don't realize they are seeing this game through rose-tinted glasses. I had fun playing here because nostalgia, not because I think EQ is an objectively good game. When the nostalgia wore off, I quit.

I get the nostalgia thing. Nothings really objectively good, but i'd say everquest is subjectively good enough to where it's effectively objectively good. It's as close to a perfect MMO as you'll ever get, which is why people become so severely addicted and on occasion lose their minds.

I had just gone to sleep after an EQ bender a few hours earlier. My sister came banging on my door telling me something really important on TV. I was pissed she was trying to wake me up, because she was always a drama queen. For once she was for real.

Pretty sure I played again that night.

I was sitting in the weight room at my highschool waiting for the morning announcements to finish (the weight room had a TV in it, and gym was my first period that year).

The two students on the TV suddenly went straight faced and told everyone to turn to the news. We flipped over about a minute before the second tower got hit, and everyone just stared in silence. A jewish girl in the class became hysterical immediately and was screaming and crying, idk if she knew someone who worked there or what.

After about an hour of watching the news, an announcement came over the intercom. "In light of what has happened this morning, we're allowing anyone who needs to to go home for the rest of the day." It was at that exact moment I became traumatized, made my teacher aware, and walked out of class.

I walked home in stead of waiting for the city to organize busses on such short notice, and got a group in Sol B with my shit geared DEF SK

I might stop or play less if they ever decide to wipe the server clean and start over.

I'm in the opposite boat. I would undoubtedly start again once they shut down and pass the code to someone else.

I really would like to vote, but with no Bsh/Twr option my hands are tied =(

References to Jet Fuel and/or Steel Beams Melting are adequate substitutions for Bush Towers as well.

You could push forum decorum to the limits and go some sort of ZOG/Flat Earth route and we may let it pass, but its not guaranteed

idk I haven't played eq in a while.

and I haven't gammed at all in a couple of months outside a bit of Legion....I think not gaming is a sign of mental problem if you aren't replacing that activity with something better.

I got a lot of overhead im dealing with the next 1-2 weeks (shit keeps piling up and Im surrounded by un-woke sleepy devious motherfuckers and negativity) so my creativity is shot as you have to get pretty violent (or vitriolic) to push back on negative people so I don't care to expound upon the above very much at the moment. I got nothing in the tank.

But basically I determined that when friends stop gaming completely, its usually a bad sign among vaccinated people. I have never seen it be a good sign.

Just my experience and observations.

hmm I did have one friend get married, but hes really unstable with weird depressive episodes (cant have any alcohol or he literally crawls under a bush face down on his belly and cries ( streaming tears) on his cell phone to whoever his current girlfriend was, even if they had only got together recently)

whenever he quit gaming for months at a time it was generally assumed he was in a very dark place.

Interesting take... When I have stopped gaming I found myself "wasting" the same amount of time on other things like imgur.com user-sub, bad TV (not enough good shit out there to meet my needs).

So basically now I have embraced gaming as a much needed catharsis, relaxation, social engagement as a person who moves around the globe multiple times every year. You'd be surprised how well gaming with the same elf pals can help fill that social need.

As long as I'm not binging on weed, my game habit Is quite healthy. But when I start smoking kush early, my brain function goes so bad that the only thing I can manage is grinding hrs of games that would be unappealing sober.

Right. EQ only ever appealed to me because its low APM.

High APM without enhancement (caffeine/Adderall) is actually pretty stressful for an adult male.

We aren't 20 anymore and I think that's why a lot of us hang around EQ a bit. Most will readily admit they don't do high APM.

i quit gaming for a few years. i was one sick puppy

this is accurate. no games is a big problem. I even mentioned it when some guy was going vyrenoth. I was like "yea...um...he hasn't gamed at all in like......a year"

I knew it meant real bad stuff was going on. And sure enough bad stuff happened.

I don't really see a reason to stop. I enjoy it ^^ I will not have children and it fits within my relationships, so I don't see a point in abandoning it. There so much to do and with the amount of time I have to invest, I don't think I will run out of things to do before I die ^^ Newer games are less like worlds and more like games and are far too busy and less social.

What do you mean by APM? Actions per minute. Ah yeah

Playing games like Cs GO creates intense physiological reactions within my body. And others, too. That's why it's so addictive. You get the epinephrine and cortisol and norepinepherine flooding your lizard brain, and if you out click your opponent you simulate survival. It's highly addictive and stressful to the body. To me, the effect is comparable to a peak high on cocaine.

Your turn!

I was living in LA hitting the gym with a homie. He practices kendo and is very thick, solid, tight. We were talking about the Silmarillion, then he started telling me Musashis life story and about this thing called the Book of Five Rings. Once I learned about how Heavy Metal Musashi was, I got hyped and my friend lent Me his book.

And now I'm here, shit posting on p99 forums.
