My posts are not a troll. All of the names I post come directly from character's names on P99 Blue. Furthermore names that anyone other than names I post are probably not real characters on blue or have been retired long ago. I am not here to point fingers, perhaps other people's posted names are real players on p99. I only want to see this blemish on Project 1999 dealt with. Some people have posted fake names. Which are vastly less creative then the names I have noticed and posted that violate the naming policy.
Woodfoot is two words lazily slapped together.

Two slapped together words is encouraged by the policy, especially for surnames.

While I've been a victim of the naming policy in the past I think the "Parge Lenis" type names need to go.
Sirken went on tour on red, changing a bunch of names like Squirtyvagina a couple of years back but blue never saw the same treatment...so many to change etc

I think one key is that both wood and foot are words that would make sense in the fantasy setting. Whereas say twerk and kayne aren't

Depends on the words, but I tend to agree. Woodfoot is mediocre at best unless he has a good bit of more substantiating it. Quality compound word names that come to mind:
Twowords
Slappedtogether
Encouragedpolicy

If you have a stupid name that's up to the GMs to change or not, but if you have an offensive/vulgar/etc. name then you should expect to get petitioned sooner or later. Just because you think you're clever adding extra letters or using hooked-on-phonics to circumvent the system doesn't make you special.

Ohhhh :c That not what came to mind when I read that. I pictured a massive airfield stretching from horizon for horizon filled with drones sitting around burn barrels, refusing to fly until they receive an acceptable vision package, a $2.00/hr wage rate increase and safer working conditions.

So you mean it makes a good pun on words?
Just because the word "drone" has some evil connotation to you doesn't necessarily mean the word meant the same to him or others who read it.
I personally would think of the word as you do, but at the same time I can recognize the dual meaning behind it, the other being a play on the name of the druid spell, "Drones of Doom".
Do you think the designers created the spell name "Drones of Doom" intending it to remind people of drones used to bomb or attack people? I doubt it.
Personally I don't get upset over the name, but I can see how you might feel.
One time on EQ1 ages ago there was a guy named "Irishcarbomb" and I did not like this name, for the same reasons you don't like "Dronestrikes". I guess I am older, and less impressionable and even less offended by words so neither name phases me now.
I wouldn't be surprised if they rmeoved his name, then again I wouldn't be surprised if they did not.
Muggens
11-15-2016, 10:41 AM
Yes Irishcarbomb would be the same thing, an offensive "name" especially to those who are Irish. Same with Dronestrikes, I guess that would be a reason to quit if you were a survivor. Since u seem more interested in being a kverulant Ill straighten it up for you: The word Dronestrike is a new word being used only these past years in relation to just that; bombing "targets" using drones controlled from afar in the safety of your gamepad. This is a dronestrike and there are no such things as other dronestrikes or uses of the word before.
The word drone in itself has no "evil connotation" to me, its a useful tool, just not for airstrikes.

It is interesting how words can carry different meanings to people. Like in the US, it is not uncommon for little kids to shout "banzai!" When jumping into a pool or lake or something. Japanese people do use it as a cheer, but using it like that can be, well onjectionable? Most Americans don't even know, but many hundreds of Japanese including mothers holding their infants jumped from the Banzai cliffs at the invasion of Saipan.
Conversely, in Japan, the slang term for a Polaroid camera is bakachon kamera. Many people use it without knowing the meaning is somewhat disparaging to people of Korean ancestry (literally means a camera that even an idiot or chonseijin (Korean) can use).
Muggens
11-15-2016, 11:15 AM
So youre saying Dronestrikes have another meaning in Japan? Im in Europe and it means the same here as everywhere else. Exactly like Irishcarbomb. Banzai is not really relatable here as its a japanese expression/exclamation unique to Japan, equivolent in the west could be something like "live well" or "live long and prosper"(from star trek). Were I am we have no specific expression for this. But when the americans are boming around with their drones we all say dronestrikes.
Conversely, do all americans(I assume you are) compare dronestrikes with polaroid cameras and druid spells? If so you seem desentized to violence.

You initiated this discussion by entering a public forum. Because I don't concur immediately with your take on the name I am a nitpicker?
I just felt like chatting about it with you, to see your perspective.
Also, just fyi, your forum name "Muggens" could be found to be offensive to anyone who has been robbed or mugged.
"Muggens" easily can be interpreted as "muggings" which is plural for "mugging".
mugging
n
an act of robbery with violence, esp in the street
Imo the name "Dronestrikes" is in poor taste.
I just want to point out that what is offensive to some is not always offensive to others, and that his name could actually be 100% in the spirit of the druid spell too.

That's why language is so fascinating to me. Even within the English language it's wild how a word can sound the same as another but be so different in spelling and meaning. Anyway I am digressing.
I think Muggens has a political perspective that is influencing his judgement of this particular name, and he is 100% ignoring the fact that there are actual ingame references to drones which have nothing to do with U.S. military drones being used to slaughter people.

Hehe you agree with me that the name is in poor taste, so yes you come off as a nitpicker in this regard. You know, someone who will argue just to argue(kverulant).
I am pretty sure there wasnt much drone murdering being used back in 99, hence the word Dronestrikes werent used, so yes I agree the devs prolly didnt think of that, but instead thought of Drones of Bees coming to insure Doom on you since its after all a Druid spell in a game from the 90s.
Drones as in multiple, not drone as in remote controlled quadthopter, and dronestrikes; remotecontrolled quadthopter dropping bombs, not Bees "coming in to strike you".
second edit: Wanting peace has nothing to do with politics.

Remember that it's an insect-based attack...that line of dots has attack messages about a 'swarm of insects'...so I've always thought the 'drones' reference was to bee drones, which are male bees. The designers might have thought that these were like warrior bees or whatever; what they actually do is lay around and try to have sex constantly. They don't even have stingers. Any comparison to human male behavior is coincidental.

That's true, ants have drones too which are 100% males who are the weakest members of the colony. They basically are born to fly in the air, have sex with queens, then die. (NOTE: correction, according to the definition below the drones have sex with PRINCESSES!)
Drone: The drones are the male ants in the colony. They are usually even smaller than the workers. Their head and mandibles (ant's jaws) are small. One can see their genitals with the naked eye. Their complex eyes are larger than these of workers or females. Their behaiviour is inadequate. They hatch from infertilized eggs, which can be laid in special cases by workers. This happens when the queen is dead in order to keep the colony's genes. In the nest drones do not do any work at all. They even can not feed on their own, but workers feed them. The only aim in a drone's life is to fertilize a princess. After that they die.

As I said in my previous posts Drones of Doom are referring to drones of bees, so yeah I already knew that about the ants as well. They're called "worker drones".
To me the important point was that dronestrikes are terrible and that some/many/most americans seem indifferent to this, as many europeans do also. To me it was an obvious contender for most obscene name ive seen so far in this game, only Christnail or something had my eyebrows rise before now.

Conversely, in Japan, the slang term for a Polaroid camera is bakachon kamera. Many people use it without knowing the meaning is somewhat disparaging to people of Korean ancestry (literally means a camera that even an idiot or chonseijin (Korean) can use).
Regarding this; I myself would never yell Banzai dropping into a pool, its clearly racist and have been tricked on to unknowning kids in the US. USA used to be very racist towards Japan and might still be I dont know.
But as we shall see this stuff always goes on a merry go round since Japanese people are perhaps known as one of the most racist peoples in the world, no doubt. Ive not personally been there, but I was a japanophile during my late teens early twenties, and several of my family and friends have been there and have experienced the Gaijin term etc. I know from uni and private studies that japans treatment and stance towards China is nothing to write home about either. Considering how long they refused to open themselves up to the rest of the world its not a suprise.

Yeah, I don't think most Americans know the origin though. Outside of countryside people, not much dislike for Japanese or Asians in general in US.
Japanese are racist, but not just that. It is more about coformity in general. That why suicide rate is so high, but also why crime is so low and why Japan catapulted from semi-industrial war shattered nation to world's second largest economy in just 20 years. Japan has a highly unique culture and intolerance is a key component of success. Paradoxically it also allows Japanese to be extraordinarily open to foreigners because the rules don't apply so well to them since they cannot be expected to understand everything. Many Japanese also have strong interest in foreign things, incorporating good bits and throwing away the rest ^^

Accurate. Some can certainly be thick, but almost never very long. Usually neither though.

I really hope I can go there one day and visit these interesting peoples myself. I have quite good knowledge on Japan, I even took private language classes back in the days because I was dreaming of moving there myself, I wanted to train Ninjutsu in the old country hehe. Over the years I lost some of my interest and respect for Japan but recently have become fascinated by them again, especially the Hikikomori situation as I have discovered that there are Hikikomori living right here in my town, I know these fellas but I have not talked or seen them for years. I guess theres alot of common ground between Norway and Japan, especially regarding the conformity.
My favorite music is always in 7/8 time signature, that certainly stems from japanese gaming growing up :D Looking at these games again many of them had a Western influence, but in the realm of religion(Christianity) Like my favorite games Soul Blazer and ActRaiser, and the anime show Neon Genesis Evangelion(not my fave, mine is The Guyver or Urotsukidoji Legend of the Overfiend!).

Names never bother me. I grew up around bikers and some of the biggest most badass ones had really odd nicknames.

I played with hundreds of "Leeann Rimes" "Legolis" and "Aragorrn" people in my time on live, they didn't even enforce this on live with hundreds of GMs, much less on here with like 2 people to handle petitions. They even let me change my surname to "Thapirrate" when I earned the Swashbuckler title on live.
I'll take my corpse recovery, and people's IP exemptions to play with their wives over your petty "ohh this name violates the rules" garbage.

What the hell is "Thapirrate", or better yet, what does it even mean?
