View Full Version : Your Favorite Zone, Classic - Velious

The Estate of Unrest has always had a special place in my heart. The name itself is a delightfully terrible pun. There's a random Super Mario Worldly/Minecraftesque (Notch had to have been an elfquester) underground cave giving occupancy to "a gnomish spelunker". There are giant reanimated hands, and fungus men, and werebats, and tentacle terrors - oh my! The zone boss, during classic era, when level 35 was considered "uber", was a thing of legend - I was expecting some monstrous apparition straight out of The Exorcist, so terrifying that one could not refer to it by more than its ominous monosyllable: "ghost". While not that scary, it remained a completely unique mob until the release of Velious, which was pretty cool.

Love unrest also on Live.

On p99 I loved whatever zone got me leveling the fastest.

Stonebrunt Mountains I have very fond nostalgia for it. Especially around the snow/mountain rocky area. Where the fort is.

Why must you limit it to two bad expansions :(.

Kedge Keep definitely best classic zone. Wasn't even discovered for awhile and wasn't itemized for awhile longer. Tons of animals to charm. Underwater so it keeps away bad players. Great EXP and decent loots. Actually had a raid boss in the zone and the best thing about EQ is raid mobs, so the best zone has to have the best activity in the zone!

Reef of Coirnav probably best PoP zone for similar reasons. Underwater zones are incredible. Fantastic group camps/named, useful tradeskilled drops, a few different good mini raid named and Coirnav probably one of the best raid encounters in the expansion.

Need more purely underwater zones in EQ. Thalassius was a cop out.

On Live I spent an absurd amount of time leveling alts in Unrest, Highkeep, Crystal Caverns, and Velks.

Like... a lot...

North Qeynos because of the music and everything about Qeynos is so classic it hurts the eyes.

Blackburrow is my favorite dungeon in EQ.

I love guk the most. Upper and lower. If I had to choose, it would be lower. Guk offers the most diverse options for playstyle and leading a crawl through the dungeon is top notch.

Blackburrow is my favorite dungeon in EQ.

Qeynos forever. Favorite starting area in classic. It's so cramped and cozy that it feels like a real city compared to other ones in EQ. It really felt like you could buy land for a cottage and retire after a long life of adventuring.

Plus those empty tiny homes made RP'ing a lot of fun with my friends. And the great taverns.

I get hit with the nostalgia feels every time I enter Qeynos.

Kedge Keep definitely best classic zone. Wasn't even discovered for awhile

That highlights the mistake made with western Velious: The gateway to that region, Siren's Grotto, was marked by Siren monsters which acted as a beacon for any tracking class. By comparison, nothing much of interest tends to hang out near the Kedge zone line. Combined with short underwater clip planes, it was no surprise that Kedge went undiscovered for awhile.

My own single favorite zone is, as with the original poster, Unrest. It's a great success of design, supporting multiple groups over a fair level range within an extremely compact space. That being said, there are lots of zones I like in this game (why else would I be here?) so I'll give honorable mentions to a couple more: Guk, for the complexity of design and interaction between the different froglok factions; City of Mist, for managing to create a popular leveling zone that nonetheless has out-of-the-way sections (the floating citadel) many players never see; and Velketor's, for putting slippery narrow ramps, invisible monsters, pit traps, dispell traps, and all sorts of general nastiness combined with confusing 3-D layout in what's essentially a generic leveling dungeon. The latter, in particular, just doesn't happen often in modern games.

EDIT: Najena deserves some sort of mention as well. I don't particularly like it. However, EQ's bad graphic quality might be the only reason that dungeon didn't cause the game to get tagged with an "M" rating. The dungeon's full of bad-graphics mutilated victims....bleeding, dismembered, guts and entrails spilling out. It's quite gruesome, and as such perhaps the truest "dungeon" in the game.
