What Manafort was charged with
The charges against Manafort at the trial broke down as follows:

False income tax returns (five counts): Manafort did not report any of the $30 million of his Ukrainian payments that he transferred into the US on his income tax returns, or pay taxes on it. He also falsely said, on those tax returns, that he had no authority over any financial accounts in foreign countries. He faced one count for each tax year from 2010 to 2014.
Failure to report foreign bank or financial assets (four counts): Manafort also didn’t report any of his offshore accounts to the Treasury Department by filing what’s known as an FBAR form — a legally required disclosure. He faced one count for each year from 2011 to 2014.
Bank fraud or bank fraud conspiracy (nine counts): These charges related to Manafort’s attempts to get loans from several US banks between 2015 and January 2017. Prosecutors alleged that he made false statements such as lying about his company’s profits, existing loans on his properties, and other matters — and that he eventually secured more than $20 million in loans.
The jury concluded that Manafort was guilty on all five tax counts, one FBAR count, and two bank fraud counts. They deadlocked on the other three FBAR counts and the other seven bank fraud or bank fraud conspiracy counts.

What’s next for Manafort — and what this means for the Mueller investigation
First off, Manafort will be sentenced for his eight-count conviction in Virginia. Mueller’s team will also have to decide whether to charge him again on the other 10 counts.


There are also the DC charges against Manafort, which are being brought against him separately for jurisdictional reasons. These charges relate to his foreign lobbying work as well as alleged witness tampering earlier this year. This trial will begin on September 17 — which will bring Manafort back to the courtroom yet again.

The jury is still out on those other 10 crimes and whatever else. Would be lulz if Trump commuted/pardon'd.

I think it's more the natural progression of monopolies to emerge in a free market environment. The potential competition for something like Facebook is rare due to what it would take to actually compete as Google found out a few years back. The selling of privacy is interesting, and you're probably on to something with certain websites. The hitch is that Facebook makes really damn good revenue with their current model, and the price for privacy might be out of reach for the average user.

For clarification,

I have nothing against him. He went through hell in Vietnam and for that he deserves the nation's respect. I had no clue, but he helped pass federal legislation that required boxing promoters to fully disclose their costs to boxers in order to establish a fair pay for the boxers which was fucking huge for the sport considering how people like Don King exploited the boxers under his promotion. I think with enough neglect, addictions aren't strong enough to self sustain. Like after a month of EQ withdrawal you have to, foolishly, force yourself back into it to reacquire the habit. Changing patterns and/or environments is helpful, probably even necessary, but I don't think I ever broke any conditioning actively. I just found myself caring less and less about it over time and the total time away is the strongest factor in the ability to resist urges. True of EQ and cigarettes for me at least.

The insidious thing is that, once you're past acute withdrawal, your brain is still broken and will always remember the exogenous chemical drive that you gave to it. You can reacquire the addiction with very little effort and total abstinence is the only long term solution. A quote from Coffee and Cigarettes: "The beauty of quitting is, now that I've quit, I can have one, 'cause I've quit." It's a nice thought, but no you really can't.

That type of thinking is responsible for basically every relapse that has ever happened past the initial the oh my god I'm going to die and/or kill everyone phase of acute withdrawal. The biggest test is the post acute withdrawal that sneaks up a month or two or three or a year later. You're not as vigilant as you were and it's very easy to think one won't hurt. Then it's two. Then whatever fuck it. Then you're fully addicted again.
