I think with enough neglect, addictions aren't strong enough to self sustain. Like after a month of EQ withdrawal you have to, foolishly, force yourself back into it to reacquire the habit. Changing patterns and/or environments is helpful, probably even necessary, but I don't think I ever broke any conditioning actively. I just found myself caring less and less about it over time and the total time away is the strongest factor in the ability to resist urges. True of EQ and cigarettes for me at least.

The insidious thing is that, once you're past acute withdrawal, your brain is still broken and will always remember the exogenous chemical drive that you gave to it. You can reacquire the addiction with very little effort and total abstinence is the only long term solution. A quote from Coffee and Cigarettes: "The beauty of quitting is, now that I've quit, I can have one, 'cause I've quit." It's a nice thought, but no you really can't.

That type of thinking is responsible for basically every relapse that has ever happened past the initial the oh my god I'm going to die and/or kill everyone phase of acute withdrawal. The biggest test is the post acute withdrawal that sneaks up a month or two or three or a year later. You're not as vigilant as you were and it's very easy to think one won't hurt. Then it's two. Then whatever fuck it. Then you're fully addicted again.

Agreed. I started again after drinking with coworkers one night and just casually bought a pack on a beer run. It had been 19 or so months too. I'll quit again, the bored tedium aspect is becoming greater.

I live smack dab in the middle of this. Fast isn't always good. There's already major infrastructure and environmental problems and at some point this level of growth will collapse creating slums and bubbles. Where I live is probably in the top 5 exploding areas in the country. It'll probably sustain itself for another decade, then it'll literally be like a massive Chicago / LA urban sprawl ghetto.

It's still a surprising popular rightwing theory.

Its also common for them to seek out Muslim countries where atrocities occur and then blame the religion. While it might be part of the story in some instances...often its better explained by other factors.

I don't actually blame Christianity for Uganda being weird...But I do think it directed that energy toward anti-gay causes. Just like Islam doesn't create anti-colonel anger but it might create a suicide bomber or two.

My theory is that Europe had lots of densely populated flat arable land. So there was more warfare for a longer period of time. Existential threats to a state cause that state to cut down on the rich-robbing-the-poor bullshit and actually do what makes the country stronger.

World War II is a more modern example for America. This is when the state as we know it was put together (only to be dismantled by a long period of no existential threat).

This kind of existential threat happened to many states in Europe over and over again. This drove technological innovation, especially when it came to warfare and organizing people bureaucratically.

Big empires in the jungle and the dessert -- they basically had no existential threats up until the invention of firearms and seafaring. These empires, like the Ottoman Empire or China, were actually more technologically advanced than Europe at one point. But then the elite eventually start kleptoing the state into oblivion and stifle all progress and innovation (big land owners were conservatives that didn't believe they needed to progress/improve things that much).

Eventually Englishmen invaded their shores, and subjected their show-military (mostly their to oppress domestic threats to the elite) to humiliating defeat. Europe had been fighting and training this whole time and its been hundreds of years (maybe thousands) sense these Empires actually had to fight to survive.

Education is military resource. Europe invented Economics, which explained to everyone that the amount of gold you have is less important than the productive power your country demands. Adam Smith was the guy that showed everyone this -- which is the historical context of the rise of Capitalism. Nobels arguing with other Nobels about what was going to make their country more rich. Eventually a new productive class of capitalist replaced the feudal lords.

To this day, a lot of countries are still feudal and not doing much better than Europe was in its Feudal phase. Because Europeans are white -- and most these others are not (but some are keep in mind, and some non-white countries are doing well like Japan) -- this looks like evidence of white superiority...particularly to dumbasses that have no interest in the real reason Europe pulled ahead, and just want to confirm their superiority.

But it's mostly just happenstance.

That talking point was debunked like 8 years ago. That data was cherry picked from a minor recession 1937 and 1938.

Historians overwhelmingly support the view that some programs weren't helpful, but overall the new deal helped the macro economy.

Keep in mind, macro economies can decline in growth and workers lives can get substantially better at the same time.
