View Full Version : Uthgard (DAOC)

Anyone play(ed) here? I'm thinking about starting DAOC up again, it's been a while and EQ just doesn't give the pvp satisfaction that DAOC does.

If so, what are the pros/cons? I was thinking about rerolling with a buddy on alb and doing scout/inf duo since we play casually and won't have time to commit to an 8v8 guild.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I beta tested it, and played it upon release shortly before deciding it wasn't for me.

I tried putting time into it again on the suggestion of some of the players here. It just sucks for me lol

I've played there before, ran guilds in all 3 realms (not at the same time, obviously). It's a very fun (and possibly addicting) game if you enjoy group pvp (RvR).

This server is as close to classic DAOC as any server will ever get, though it's not all classic, for example...Alchemy and Spellcrafting are in, but not the expansion with which they were introduced.

You should check out playtocrush.com -- shadowbane emulator that's nearly finished. They just had another public preview (basically weekend-long beta tests) and it looks like it's on point.

It's really the best PvP MMO I've ever played.

Server seems to have a huge European population, I tried playing but found mountain time didn't align with more than 200 people being on. But I've seen it with over 1000 people as well.

Some classes are unfinished, but for the most part it's DAoC.

I just got DAOC DL and setup today gonna be playing Uthgard for my pvp fix and EQ for everything else classic games for the win! I love how people who trully do enjoy the classics get the chance to the play them as they once were in there prime and not watered down. Ive got play to crush bookmarked and have never tried Shadowbane yet I would definately try it out when everything gets rolling and see how that games PVP system is. If anyones playing Uthgard on the side playing Hibernia send my Firbolg Druid Felwithe a tell :) whats funny is I logged in today to get stuff setup and talked to a guy who plays here as well lol .

My Hib guild, though inactive, we still had some fun times last year during the long P99 outtage in April. Homp/Divinity and Secrets/P99-Dev played in it too, just to name some names.

http://herald.uthgard-server.net/herald.php?view=stats&p1=guild&p2=RPs&p3=DESC&p5=Guild&p6=Fury

Some of the things to come: http://uthgard.net/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=53&lang=en&jfile=viewtopic.php&f=47&t=20661, they're working on integrating the original RA system, for those who don't know, it's like the AA system in EQ but points can only be earned through PvP, as well as PvP dungeons (all 3 realms have access to, non-instanced.)

If anyones interested in seeing how the game is, I can post some screens of PvP action in this thread, let me know...

It does have pve content at cap level but its not as complex as EQ or even WOW. The game is designed around pvp and thats where it really shines.

The uthgard server is hosted in germany, expect lots of euros playing on it.

Ive been playing on it for some time now. The big thing is that you CANNOT box on the server AT ALL. If someone suspects you of boxing the gms make you do retarded things to prove that your 'girlfriend' is a real life person. This makes the game more challenging cause you cant just 8 box a group to farm rps in pvp or plvl yourself up to cap super fast.

Too bad mythic doesnt just create themselves a true classic server. Ive heard from too many people that they would pay to play a dedicated one but I just dont see it happening.

Is it a hard game to jump into (confusing zones/maps/defined objectives)

Bump on this question. I played it for like a day and cant remember anything about it. Also if its all about PvP wasn't Shadowbane considered the premiere game for PvP considering the entire game was ran by players that were sieging eachothers cities and stuff? Or is the end game of DAoC similar to that?

DAOC is and pretty easy game, with few mecanics, speed + skills does help alot in the PvP, how ever you can level up quite easy with groups, soloing is for very few classes, however you dont have to med as long or wait for life as long as EQ, so its posible to solo all the way to 50, however its MUCH faster to have groups of 3-4 or even more, groups range up to 8 and are normaly 2 healers + 1CC and rest DPS.

the thing about DAOC is that allmost all classes have some utility they bring to groups very few classes are "solo" the rogue and archer classes are hard to play up solo, but very rewarding when it comes to PvP content.

Character Builder: You can see which realm has what classes in it, and what their abilities are, at every level up to 50. All of the classes are available except for those prefixed by a [C] (that's a later expansion not covered in Uthgard.) Enjoy!

Did DOAC have end game raiding content ? or was it a PVP based end game ?

Later expansions had some raid-ish content, more akin to Sky quests than Vox kills. The emphasis wasn't really on killing big single targets, more groups killing targets for quest items (Trials of Atlantis xpac)

The real 'endgame' was Realm v Realm v Realm. If you haven't played it, it's difficult to really explain the dynamic, but suffice to say the rewards were tangible, like access to dungeons locked out for the other 2 realms, and dmg/exp bonuses. It was fluid. Something like Warhammer Online, but better.

I thoroughly enjoyed that, and I normally hate PvP.

Edit: I might give this a spin, is there a general trend in realm choice for P99'ers?

this uthgard server has a custom raid style zone, i forget what it is called, i think it is call tajendi, but it has some stuff that requires a raid force, although you can use crazy tactics to kill the the stuff with one group, like dying over and over, while you run/kite the mob back to where you respawn lol

Toop's crew is going to Midgard. Hobby is onboard for my team, which will probably go to Albion, not 100% on that yet but will know once we get more interested.

There is some decent raid content in the game, doable with 2FG or less with capable players. Each realm has a dragon of its own, then there is Megalodon, Beliathan and Legion in Darkness Falls RvR dungeon (with all 3 realms having access), Frontiers have raid mobs also for each realm like the giant in Midgard which can be killed by any realm capable, just to name a few.

Daoc's learning curve is pretty easy at the beginning; the game pretty much tells you where to go and what you need to do up till around lvl 20.

Like any other game, especially based around pvp, there is quite a bit of end game learning to do to be a real 'master' at the game.

I would say the game is mostly based around having good gear. Skill is definately something that can balance out a fight but when it comes to a super geared out noob fotm caster vs a pro that just hit 50 there is very little chance of winning for the pro. Player crafted gear is almost always built into an end game build too and you can do well with just player made stuff too if you dont like to pve much.

The game really shines in pvp and whereas im not 100% sure about uthguard you can level almost 100% in pvp on live (not so much anymore with the lack of people playing live, but you get the idea).

Damn you guys, makin me want to play again.

All you have to do is get an older version of DAoC portal, I think Nalkin has been having the same issue, and found a post on Uthgard's forum about the problem being with the newest version of DAOC Portal.

When you install an older version of daoc portal, you'll be able to set the client to EU in the settings and then "patch it down" that way. I've also done that myself in the past. We've had people starting on Uthgard just a few days ago. Be sure you patch the game using daoc portal and not directly.

Hey, Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in trying it out this weekend. Not knowing much, could you answer some questions ?

Is it a hard game to jump into (confusing zones/maps/defined objectives)
Is the game Item based or Skill based ?
Looking over their web page, I see that there 3 different server faction ?(not sure if I have that right ?) is there a better faction to choose ?

DAOC is pretty similar to EQ. There's a bit of a learning curve, but if you're familiar with EQ you should be fine. Classes are a bit more complex than EQ but not by a whole lot. There's some reactive skills and such that make the game a little deeper, which definitely helps the pvp. Leveling is a pain in the ass a lot like EQ, it's not bad 1-40 but the last 10 levels take a ton of grinding. The problem with that is that the PVE is pretty lackluster compared to EQ, so you have to put in the time to get to 50, get your gear and RvR. Gearing up in DAoC isn't as big a deal as EQ, you just got to figure out what you want to use as a set and then farm the pieces, which could take you a week or less if you play a bunch. There's posts on the Uthgard forum that suggest different gear sets for level 50.

Basically the way the game works is that there are three warring realms that each have their own slew of classes. There's a set of "skills" that are distributed evenly among the classes in each realm. The "generic" way to look at it is that Midgard (Nordic) is the melee realm, Hibernia (Irish) is the magic realm, and Albion is the stealth/defensive/well-rounded realm. The class design is really nice in DAOC. For example, the "healer" class of Albion is the Cleric and gets healing/buff/nuke lines. For Hibernia it's the Druid with healing/buff/pet lines. Midgard has the Healer with healing/buff/cc lines. So the realms all sort of have "base" classes but with different specialization lines to make them unique.

So it might take some time to get to 50 and obtain your BIS set, but it's worth it for the RvR, since DAOC is essentially the best pvp mmo.

I have a Skald on Uthgard but I ended up quitting since the two American guilds I was in fell apart. Midgard is hella Germans with a lot of other Europeans mixed in, Americans are sort of hard to find so it's hard to succeed when you play during off-hours.

We have 3 more players joining our ranks, friends of mine and DAOC vets; L11 Blademaster, Mentalist, and Druid. They just started last night and will be rising up to our main crew's levels for PvP, over the next couple of days.

If anyone still wants to join, it's not too late. Send a tell to Goliathus/Nublu ingame for a group if you're in the level range (-/+ few lvls). We've made some caster alts to help them up there (and to make aoe groups later.) I'll update the current roster list tomorrow.

"In 2001, Mythic Entertainment introduced a new team-based form of PvP combat with the release of Dark Age of Camelot and called it Realm versus Realm.[1][4] In RvR, players of each realm team up to fight against players from the opposing realms in team-based combat. This can include normal skirmishes between rival groups that is common in other PvP systems, but also consists of objective-based battles such as taking and holding keeps or capturing enemy relics." -Courtesy of Wikipedia!

hmm think i might have to have a go at this again. i only played prigianlly for a few months because the RL friend i was playing with met a girl through the game and they ended up running off and grouping together all the time, and left me behind so i ended up not being able to group with them

I play off peak from you guys though, but do any of you play odd times?

if so, what classes would be most desired? i'm liking the look of stalkers (either) so might start with one of them. o course i'm going to be alot lower level tham most of you and i can't for the life of me remember how each class is able to solo... in fact i'm not even sure i've played hibernian before. albion and midguard i have

is there a steady supply of lowbies around to group with if soloing is not an option?

anyways, hope to see some of you around. i'll post back here with my character name if i get going

well not a bard yet, only level 4, but will be tonight

I must say from the small exposure i had to the server last night it was a very pleasent experience. Maybe it's the knowledge that everyone you meet online is effectively your ally in the war of the realms.

I decided on bard because it seemed 90% of all LFG's were looking for a bard hehe. I've been doing some reading and it seems they are often the ones to be blamed for pvp losses (eep) so looks like starting with a class that can make or break might not be a good idea lol. oh well can only try i guess

Thanks for your help last night Scrooge, big help with advice to start me off. I saw the Fury has captured "some tower somewhere" which was when i started chatting hehe.

so anyway i'm an off peak player during the week, and occasionally prime time during the weekend (kids depending) so if any of you are around at wierd times look me up, i'll be happy to show you how bad a nub i am lol.

You guys have any requirements for joining the guild?

PvP Group in Wilton: Leveled past the level cap for the zone by accident, and hit Realm Rank 3 right after! This basically meant that if I died and couldn't get a rez, I'd be booted out and wouldn't be able to come back in.
