View Full Version : Tradeskill Skill ups and DEX

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post tradeskill questions, but I didn't see somewhere else that fit better.
Anyway, I'm trying to get through the 160-230 tailoring gap, and since it's so expensive I want to make sure I'm maxing out my chances at skill ups. Basically, I'm wondering if DEX has been confirmed to have any impact, or if it's just WIS or INT.
As a druid, should I be getting a DEX buff before crafting? If I have over 200 WIS, is it worth swapping out some for DEX gear?
Thanks!

Tradeskills use the higher of either INT or WIS for skillup checks
for some reason I remember smithing using STR but I can't find any info to back it up

Smithing is STR.
Fletching is DEX.
Everything else is INT or WIS whichever is higher.
Smithing is the greatest of WIS/INT/STR
Fletching and Poisonmaking are WIS/INT/DEX
Everything else is WIS/INT
* These define chance of skill-up upon success (or rarely fail), not chance of success (which is defined by trivial checked against your skill level).
As a druid, at least get your WIS over 200 for best results.

So a druid with minimum STR but 200 WIS will have equal Smithing gains to 200 STR?

Yes.
Alternately, if you're a melee class wanting to do smithing, you don't have to buy a set of gear to make yourself smart/wise if you've got a bunch of +STR gear.

That's an awkward way to think of it. Better to say they'd have a controlling attribute equal to 200.
For smithing, STR is INT is WIS. Only the highest counts.

Good to know--thanks for the replies, all!

If an item is, say, trivial 168. Does it matter if your skill is 168 vs. 200 for success rate? Or is just getting to trivial enough to max your chances?

you have the same success rate at 168 as you do at 200 if something is trivial at 168
you have the same success rate at 168 as you do at 200 if something is trivial at 168
This is slightly incorrect. The formula used means you'll only reach the highest chance of success (95%) a few skill levels after you hit trivial for something.
EX:
With a skill of 168 versus a trivial of 168 you have a success rate of 93.5%
With a skill of 169 versus a trivial of 168 you have a success rate of 94.5%
With a skill of 170 versus a trivial of 168 you have a success rate of 95%
Depending on trivial, it could be a matter of 1 skill point or 5 skill points.

Is it ever any more than 5 points? Should I get to trivial+5 for whatever I want to make to be sure I have the highest success rate?
I wouldn't worry about going more than +5. +3 ought to be sufficient for most of the higher stuff.

Additional question that coincides with the OP's question:
My understanding is the determining stat, higher is better for chances of skill-up. Idk why maybe I'm just reading incorrectly, but it sounds like everyone is using the reference number of 200?
For example, in a tradeskill calculating off Wis, max wis would be better than 200, right?
If that's the case, OP, feel free to PM me. I made a Druid who I use as an EC mule who I outfitted up to 240something unbuffed Wis with I think less than 15k in gear? Something like that.
His name is Weavings and I'm happy to let you inspect him and/or post up what I bought once I have a chance to log back in if that helps you.
Most use the reference of 200 because after that your returns begin to diminish so it's not necessarily worth the effort.
BUT max is still always better, technically.
