View Full Version : Pick me a Race/Class

Hello all, I have been a lurker on these boards for a long time and I am finally posting because I need your help!
I am a multi-game alt-a-holic that gets nowhere fast. I have very limited time to play each day 30min / hour and may need to stop suddenly due to my kids.
I have played almost all race/class combinations and find awesomeness and lameness in each. I really cannot stick to one to save my life.
Pick something for me......
Perhaps if I bring this out into the world, I will hold myself more accountable.
I am open to anything!!! I will figure out how to make it work

I am in a similar boat, because;
A. I have a career, spouse, and a child that limit my daily playtime to around 1 hour, and I may need to AFK at any given second. :)
B. I like to enjoy all aspects of EQ, which means playing multiple classes and multiple races. I am an alt-aholic.
In the end, I decided that I would play a Necromancer - for these reasons:
1. Feign Death (which solves many of the problems created by a sudden AFK - see item A above).
2. Laid-back (AFK) solo-ability. A necro is arguably in the top three best solo classes in the game, so I don't need to waste time finding groups. I can get my own gear, complete many of my own quests, and accomplish things on my own time without a group. Necro pet soloing is also not as attention-necessary as charm-soloing, which requires your undivided attention.
3. Great utility spells - invis, invis to undead, levant, corpse summoning, mana regen, skel illusion, limited resurrect, etc.
4. Can be effective soloing naked. Since I'm starting "fresh", with no twink gear/cash, I wanted a class that doesn't need costly gear to be an effective soloer.
Race? I decided to play Iksar, because i'm a min-max type of person, i'm in no rush to hit 60, and I wanted to try leveling a character in Kunark.
Runner-up race would have been a Dark Elf.
Runner-up classes I also considered:
- Mage (FANTASTIC pet choices, amazing summon utility items, and of course CotH someday). Problem for me was, no FD ability to handle AFKs. Also, their epic is simply the worst in EQ, and a mage epic pet really is a hallmark of a 60 character someday. It's such a strong pet over non-epic pets.
- Shadowknight (Has FD, can solo, fun-to-play hybrid class, but gear dependent on weapons, AC, and haste items).
- Druid (ports ports ports, can solo outside, great utility).
Summary:
Consider a Necro to solve your play-time and AFK issues. Choose Iksar if you want a challenge, a tail, and a longer grind to 60. Choose a dark elf for sex appeal, a faster grind, and an easier time with vendors/bankers in classic zones.

Druid or necro. Necro can push Fd and go afk at the drop of a hat. Also can solo and doesnt need gear.
Druid is another good choice. They can solo͵ have best travel skills͵ and after level 19 you can port to a druid rings (relatively safe places to afk) at any point if you need to quickly leave. Also not very gear dependant.
If you have pp to spend monk also an option

Druid/Necro is ALWAYS the answer given and its why 50% or more of the server are Druids and Necros.
Play something else! Server needs tanks! You are likely to get a fair amount of "free stuff" in terms of gear, money, weapons, etc, so don't worry about the "You can't play a tank unless you twink", as your chances of finding someone to give you some stuff to help you on your way is REALLY likely (I've had it happen on all 3 of the characters I've started, without asking). Plus you'll be able to tank for groups without much problem even if your gear isn't the BEST, magic weapon and banded will get you to high 20's.

I think I may go with the first answer on the board. This sounds like both a challenge and interesting experiment.
I understand the argument for both Druid and Necro (I have played both to 17) There is just something missing that doesn't get me too excited to play the class.

enchanter.
Starting at level 12 you can solo as fast, if not faster, than any other class. If you feel like grouping you're always wanted. And your role in the group is somewhat exciting in that your ability to crowd control will make or break it. They're not very gear dependent, and gear is pretty cheap anyways. Through an effective soloing path you'll make a lot of plat along the way. Illusions are fun too - makes selling vendor trash much easier while soloing.
Just don't be a high elf. High elves are ugly AF. Even with illusions, deep down you know what you are.

honestly this would be pretty fun. If you manage to get him to proc'ing weapon range the DEX boost will be sweet and you'll have good stats all around.
It's a strong version of a warrior that's uncommon. Nice suggestion Aesop!
Ok that does it, even if this is a joke I'm rolling with it and blaming yall if it all goes pair shaped.

Not a joke, warrior is a tough solo choice but keep bind wound maxed + the regen will help downtime. Great duo and slam uses bash skill for trolls and skills up and it's great for interrupts before kickstun at 55.

Troll warrior?! Lame. Erudite SK is way better.
Also, Gnome warrior, now THERE is a under represented race/class combo.

Gnomes start with low T and it's one of the hardest stats to raise because endgame raiding actually lowers T.

low T is a male medical condition indicating low testosterone, resulting in an abundance of wussiness.

technique. It's the stat that determines base trick ability. Speed, acceleration and jump all factor into your ability to get air, but with a high technique stat you can get a 720 with the amount of airtime that would get a less technical character a 420 partial resulting in wipeout. Gnomes are lacking jump, acceleration, and technique, their only asset being a high top speed stat owing to low aerodynamic profile, so they require intense skill and maintenance of a constant high speed to achieve a high trick score. This makes them the best in a skilled player's hands but also the least forgiving race to take on the slopes.

Snowboarding or skateboarding? Anyway I'm laughing really hard and now I wanna make a gnome warrior more than ever.
Best warrior on Tunare for a long time was gnome warrior. He rerolled Ogre after being banned. Best but Stars was horrible people.

Strictly speaking aerodynamics gnomes are superior to trolls in that respect. Although their solid stature is what makes trolls the clear choice between the two for the warrior profession.
Popeye forearms really help when swinging around various weapons.

TBH, if i were min-maxing, troll would be my third choice for warrior race....
1) Iksar: AC bonus+Velious Plate+Same Regen Trolls have, and who needs slam anyway? Lower STR than other two options, push base agi to 75, dump rest into str.
2) Ogre: Can't be stunned from the front. It's huge, but so are ogres - and they don't bathe... ever. Highest STR/STA of the options, push agi to 75, dump rest in dex.
3) Troll: Regen is good. Slam is.. meh, it has its uses as an interrupt while leveling, but again these guys are freaking huge. I don't mind having to shrink, but its less hassle for me to play a race that fits through doors naturally. Close to ogre level STR/STA, push agi to 75, dump rest into dex.
All of the above have craptacular faction with... pretty much everyone, with an RZ Ogre having the least amount of 'bad' faction. But thats like saying human SKs have less bad faction than delf SKs - sure they do, but it still sucks.

I really want this to not be a joke, is this a joke? I feel like this would be a good choice...
Early levels you can berserk bow kite bugs pretty well (they run slow. Run diagonally to build even more distance).
For off hand use a useful proc like polished granite tomahawk to pad tanking or dps until duel wield actually produces a decent amount of swings (procs can happen even on failed duel wield checks).
While toe-to-toe fighting bind wound, /stand, attack on hotkeys while fighting goes a long way.
Combat is simple afk auto attack, preferably standing in a narrow corridor so you don't get pushed out of range of the target, letting you deal with adult responsibilities.
Down time just make a hotkey that spams 5 bandages (or 4 then sit).
Troll was the suggestion above, but personally I found Halfling works well to this style, hide//sneak really cuts down on invis potions used and opens up a lot of vendors/quests you might not normally be able to access.

Hmmmmmm, this intrigues me when you say more vendors/quests. I do like the idea of being smaller and on the good side. Hard to say goodbye to regen though :(

okay, if we are talking Popeye forearms, aerodynamics and testosterone; I can't believe no one suggested a male dwarf warrior.
Dwarfs have a good start on str/sta though not nearly as high as large races, but they certainly have a manly look to them -- Solid Arm, Mega Manly Beard, and aren't as short in statue as a Gnome or Halfling.
Now the male dwarf I hear has far superior aerodynamics and no one is going to be kicking him around... dwarfs just don't stand for that... hell they even hate being tossed, unless absolutely necessary to get over those large chasms. However give them a good running start and with a hardy leap they will preform spectacular feats of dexterity -- the barrel roll!!!
Granted the dwarf does have his drawbacks -- regular bathing required to keep the facial hair all neat and clean (a dwarf true pride & joy), unable to hide / sneak like those tricky halflings, is burdened by the goodness in his heart unlike trolls, ogre, iksars.
In the end a dwarf warrior can make a great companion and is liked by humans, elves, his own kin, gnomes and halflings even if he can't have his or well I guess someone else's precious??

I think the best way to gear trolls is with plate hands/gloves and cloth (azure?) sleeves. This gives the appearance of some chunky metal box armour gauntlets with lithe upper arms. Makes a bit more visual sense. Chain look tunic compliments this look well in my opinion.

So as an update, I have been able to play a Halfling Warrior up to 16 and I have been having a lot of fun!
- I really like being smaller, easier to move around and look
- Tanking in this game is my thing, I can see myself playing this style for a long time.
- I have also played a Dwarf Paladin to 17 which I really like.
Now I can't decide which class I would want to play more. I can't hold aggro nearly as well with the Warrior, but the DPS is really fun (but passive) way to hold hate.
1.) Which is better to solo? I really would like to avoid soloing if at all possible, but I would hate to rely only on grouping
2.) Questing is probably my favorite thing in this game, does one class have an advantage over the other?
Let me know your opinions, I would greatly appreciate them.

A paladin has more soloability than a warrior. Aggro problems can be solved with gear on the warrior - if youre on a busget try twin SSoY to start with. The important thing is aggro procs. Warrior is going to be the top tank for raids, and by top i mean... only maintank for 95% of content. Knights are going to have easier aggro in groups though. An SK is, imo, more soloable than a paladin although it may just be personal preference.

1) Warrior is among the worst soloing classes in the game without some major twinkage (Fungi/CoF etc). Paladins are actually decent soloers. Not as good as a "real" solo class like a necro, mage, shaman, druid or enchanter, but definitely viable. Heals, buffs, and the ability to pull things solo with lull shouldn't be underestimated.
2) Both classes have plenty of quests to complete. I'd recommend looking into the Crafted Armor questline if you go warrior and the Armor of Ro questline for paladin. The armor is pretty obsolete in the Velious era, but the quests are fun and it's good to have a goal while leveling that gets you moving around to various zones instead of simply hopping from MM to CoM to KC to Seb like 90% of the server.

Dark elf rogue, cleric, or warrior. If you raid, ever, those are the most important lv 60 classes hands down and will earn you special snowflake points since DE rogues and especially warriors are nearly non-existent and have a cool VP robe they can wear to win fashion quest.
