There can never be enough Warriors / Clerics / SK / PAL - These classes are always welcome

There is a Huge amount of Mages / Druids / Necros and to some extent Enchanters and Shamans playing currently

You dont see to many Rangers, Bards are also not played AS often, But not as rare as the above level 20 Ranger. Not THAT many Rogues either. Wizards are sort of on the scarce side too.

If you want to roll something that isint played that often then go Ranger / Wizard / Rogue

I'm leaning on going with a tank of some sort again. =D I never really got into DPS classes a whole lot, and healing is just meh. Is it fairly easy to get ahold of a shaman or chanter for buffs?

It is, vumnaydar. Paladins definately lack on this server, as well as active rangers in the end-game.

Paladins and Shadowknights have a nasty experience penalty, just so you're aware of that =).

Anyways...The rule is, and should ALWAYS be..Play the class you feel like playing, you're not playing this game for others...only yourself.

i wouldn't roll a naked hybrid as my first character. the xp penalty can be pretty brutal and having no gear just makes it worse. watching a naked mage three levels under you solo a mob that would mop the floor with you can be pretty demoralizing.

i would roll a monk. mend is op. you don't need much gear and you'll be able to afford a full set of WUs and EBMs in no time flat. Monks are one of the funnest/most exciting classes end-game. Start in FP. When you hit level 2-3, head to EC and ask a high level mage or druid for a damage shield--you'll be level 10 in 2-5 hours. Around level 9-11 head to WC and hang around the druid ring. Ask high level mages for a damage shield and high level druids for a damage shield, skin like nature, and regen. With the last three in particular you'll blow through reds with little to no downtime and reach level 18 or so in six hours or less.

Monks are really cool, however, not very awesome solo at later levels. In classic monks haven't reached their uber potential..in kunark with fungy tunic..they become awesome.

yeah chanters are completely OP end game, always in demand thanks to clarity, and incredibly fun.

Whats some good items to get for a up and coming plate wearer on this server, the options are alot more limited than when I had it to do last! Nothing outrageous just decent stuff.

Ames's post was right on, I'd say.

Monks are really cool, however, not very awesome solo at later levels. In classic monks haven't reached their uber potential..in kunark with fungy tunic..they become awesome.

Monks are now very effective at damage mitigation even up to level 50, which gets nerfed in Kunark, and additionally raises the level cap to 60 which doesn't help their cause any. In Classic they are better tanks and damage dealers than warriors with some awesome moves and cool abilities thrown in.

BUT if and when Kunark comes out, Warriors are the only thing you ever want tanking the hardest stuff in the game, and are awarded gear accordingly. In my Everquest experience, loot has always been... 1) Warrior or Cleric, 2) anyone else.

I think your choices boil down to:

1. Feel the power of the Monk (and to a different extent, Shadowknight and Paladin) first hand, because you may never see him in all his full glory again.

2. Build a warrior, thinking of the long-term, where high level guilded warriors are going to be some of the first ones to get amazing gear and easily power up to the mighty proportions Kunark allows compared to Classic.

Gah..I soloed like a madman in kunark with fungi tunic and tranquil staff. But yes, they are not good as tanks in kunark, which is a good thing, as that was never supposed to be their role anyways, they're supposed to be a resilient dps class with excellent pulling abilities and the opportunity to solo (at least that is what I personally always meant they were supposed to be).

But ye..solo without fungi tunic in kunark might be harder than it is atm.

Believe it or not, its possible to play on this server without being twinked. People did it on live all the time, and people used to do it here too. Now everyone is spoiled and expects you to have yaks and a fbss by level 10. It may be rough if you choose a warrior, but just play what you want, and the gear will come to you.

I say this in every 'What should I play?' thread.

Play what you want to play. Rolling a class because the server needs them is the surest way to burn out in almost every case. When you burn out, and re-roll, to what you were thinking of playing the first time, you will have wasted all that time and plat.

I'm guilty of this, same as anyone. I made a shaman based on my experience on Live, and based on the desire to be 'sought after in a group'. I struggled and beat my head against a wall to get to 47 and finally gave up. I just didn't like it this time around. I made a necro and haven't logged on that shaman in 6 weeks.

^--- That statement is so true it still annoys me. I ended up being loaned a lot of gear by a friend to level my war with so I could keep up with the monks and the knights in my group, I'd definitely have had a lot tougher time with a pure warrior untwinked.

I agree, play what you want. I played a Paladin on Live my entire career. I started a month or two before Kunark, so I had to play catchup. I don't think I reached end-game until Velious. They were fun but I was always a bit under-geared, so I felt as though I was a bit of a paper tank. This isn't a problem if you start one now, as you'll have time to get up there by the release of Kunark. As far as the xp penalty, just grind that shit out like a man. :)

I rolled a monk this time - loving it thus far. Always wanted to be a dps-type. Unfortunately, I've been the MT in the group OVERWHELMINGLY more than just dps. I for one welcome Kunark and the backseat we take, along with the crazy boost in DPS with Tstaff, etc.

Play a Kobold Insurance Salesmen. Guarantee you never see those at raids. Think of all the insurance you could sell. Fuckin a.

IIRC, the Monk mitigation nerf doesn't come till later in Kunark, not right when Kunark is released. I soloed straight to 60 very effectively with just bandages (no fungi till after I was 60, and no tranq staff till even later) because I stuck to classic (Kunark mobs are harder) and found some not-well-known places to kill stuff.

From 58-60, i soloed nearly exclusively in lower guk and sol B because it was so annoying to even try to get groups in Seb or KC...

We aren't talking about the Monk mitigation nerf that hit during PoP are we? The one that basically made all monks stop playing?

Looking at the patch notes that I found on...ahem...another site, the Nerf to Monk Mitigation wasn't until October 16th, 2002.
