Ok from the start I know the real answer is play what you want, and in the end it doesnt matter, and all the races even out...etc etc.

My question is thus. Are there any advantages other than cool looks that would make one want to play an evil race for magician...ie dark elf. I suppose you could play cazic-thule erudite or bertox gnome...but the elf is the only one KoS all over I think.

Anything?

Best advantage of being a good race is, if you solo the hut on Sister Island in OOT from 24-32 you can actually vendor the Long Swords (11p each, weigh a shitload) to the Dwarf vendor that's on the same island like 20 feet away. On my Dark Elf Mage, I had to take boat all the way to East Freeport to unload when I did that and it's annoying as shit.

I remember comparing the base stats of each race and went with Eru. I don't recall the differences though.

Is it worth it for being able to sell in grobb or oggok? And can a cazic Thule or bertox worshipping Mage sell in those cities?

Gnome...because they are superior in every way...and it's in their blood to party.

Gnomes get tinker, which might come in handy eventually. :)

go gnome or go ghome

also, gnome + guise of the deceiver = the best

My first and highest caster on live or here was a dark elf wizard. I always wished I had chosen Erudite - for faction, higher base int, and height (My gnome necro is kind of annoying because first person view isn't as helpful unless i'm in skel form).

But all in all, the differences are incredibly minor between Gnome/High Elf/Dark Elf/Erudite. I can't see a reason to be a human caster - maybe because you can carry more loot and typically higher base STA?

I haven't seen hide to be immensely helpful, but some people say it is - that would be a good reason to be dark elf.

umm.. hide?

Am I misunderstanding hide?
I always believed it was a self-only, standstill only invis.
Meaning it killed your pet when you invis, and won't take you off the aggro list.
So if you can't hide to med and keep the pet up, and cant hide to clear aggro after the pet is dead, whats the point?

yeah, that's really why i was kind of like "umm..."
because looks themselves should be enough to want you to make a dark elf, obv

for enchanters hide makes sense because it's an easy way to end charm on purpose so that may be why you see dark elf enchanters - plus enchanters can become any race they want anyways.

for wizards it can make slight sense because hide is useful while medding afk without having to worry about invis dropping prematurely. also invis has cast timer/mana cost

for necros it makes sense because you're evil anyways, might as well go all out

for mages it's just stupid

well if we are gonna go the route of starting stats, then technically you'd want to go Human because of the high starting str/sta because its way way way easy to max out int. BUT who the ef wants to be a human lol

i'd say go Eru. hella less common, higher starting int, and your not KOS everywhere.

Once Kunark drops, Dark Elves and High Elves will be able to craft and wear their racial cultural armor (Adamantite & Mithril). I don't know whether other caster races have similar things available in classic but yeah- if you like the possibility of running around with chain graphic, then pick DE or HIE
