View Full Version : Secret Regrets....

I wonder what are some peoples secret EQ regrets!! Stuff that haunts you now and then as you play.....
For example, did you borrow a FBSS and forget to ever give it back? Or did you see your pet bug out and train your raid, but kept quiet so no one knew?
Me? Well...one time I was in karana....and I saw a named centaur up! Luckily nearby was this low level ranger. I was so confident about rangers powers that I convinced him to fight the centaur with me (even though he kept telling me he wasn't strong enough!!). I just told him to use his bow and it would be easy, that he had to trust me!!!
Well, the fight began and I hadn't realized centaurs run almost as fast as sow! The ranger struggled to fight him with a bow, he was so brave.....but he was losing....he also didn't know how to outrun a sowed creature or do run and shoot so well (something I take for granted).
Anyhow, he ended up dying while I lived. I tried to send him tells that I would call in rescue gnomes to revive him....but he must have /q out....I never saw him again....
My secret shame!!! Elf murder by way of centaur!!!!

One time on Red, my group and I were sitting inside the entrance of Upper Guk. An Ogre Shaman waltzes up to us that was in range of us (meaning we could kill him).
Our policy was to kill first and ask questions later - we discussed this previously.
We instantly engage and kill the Ogre. His 140+ stamina gone in the blink of an eye as all 6 of us opened up. The only thing that existed was spell particles still shining as his corpse lie down. Red Myst...
The body rotted there. We think they quit.
I remember my first bier.

Nothing regrettable on EQ, but on Shadowbane once I was on an alt and got ganked in a group by a higher level that had no business there. I hop on my thief and proceeded to sneak run behind this guy for over half an hour as he literally ran all the way across the continent. Once he sat down, I backstabbed and killed him with one hit. It wasn't until after that I realized it wasn't the guy that ganked me. Worth every second of it though for the story.

I once convinced a random shaman to duo with my monk in kaesora. They left there successful and productive MM group to join me. I logged my porter to pick them up, ran them to kaesora, they bound, I logged to switch to my monk.... And internet went down! Never saw them again to apologize. Felt bad for ruining their exp flow.
Edit: Also, back when I thought I had quit. Gave away a lot of gear to a friend, fungi, CoF, the like. Now that I'm back, he seems to have quit and I want my gear back haha.

Easy, and not a secret - My biggest regret is Beta Phase 4 EQ and shoving that needle in my arm all the way back when.
Had lotsa fun! Still playing and having some fun!... but holy Jesus fuck how much time have I sunk into this game over the past 18 years?!
It's that dirty little thing I can't stop doing. I can quit drinking, smoking, and drugs. Can't quit EQ permanently. Biggest. Regret. Evar.

Good thread. I've got one...
Back in EQLive (I was 17 or 18 at the time) I was soloing giant skellies or something in an outdoor zone on my necro. Can't remember which zone now (maybe a Karana, or a zone with a lake in it?). I had jboots so I would kite yellows and reds around (one at a time) around to PL myself. During a kite fight with one, I lost the mob and thought someone stole it. I backtracked and found the group I thought had stolen it. I don't know what came over me, but I completely overreacted. Instead of inquiring with a polite /tell, I trained something on them and FD. Peoples died. I immediately logged, feeling stupid and ashamed of what I'd just done.
Next time I log on, I get a /tell from my guild leader. "Did you train a group and get them killed?"
Yeah, the group got my license plate before I logged.
We were a small, tight knit guild of really nice people, so I'm sure my guild leader was baffled by the accusation. Which is probably why he bought my lie. I used the old "it was my little brother playing my account" excuse. I exchanged a few /tells with one of the victims to "apologize." He was very nice and cool about it.
Better late than never to come clean, I guess. Sorry everyone!

When EQ2 came out and EQ servers were doing their first merge, every player was offered a free transfer to an server of their choice. During this time I had become somewhat close with this odd fellow who seemed to never sleep and just grind up to 30 on numerous characters.
He asked me to transfer for him 10k plat from one of his characters to the other. I took his 10k, transferred servers, and never heard from him ever again. I still feel bad.

I was racing to an open AC camp in Guk on my cleric. Along the way I saw scryer was up and I didn't see a group around so I aggroed it and started training it to AC to kill it there. Along the way I get a tell from a guy saying his group was camping the scryer. So I brought the scryer back to the camp and rooted it in front of them, apologized, and then ran back to AC.
A few minutes later a couple of them send me tells saying I wiped their group because a gaz knight had come with me when I rooted the scryer in front of them. I apologized again and offered to rez any who died but pretty much the whole group had logged so I only got to rez one of them.
I'll probably never stop feeling awful about it.
One time I left my group in LGuk on my rogue right after a wipe (where I made it out alive) -- Rather then help with the CR, I ran off to the tunnel to buy my erudite illusion mask from someone I had made plans to meet with earlier in the day.
It's definitely my most shameful moment on EQ. I feel ashamed to even tell the story to be honest with you. :/

Alright, I'll bite.
Many years ago on live (Veeshan) I stumbled into a random building in North Freeport and found a pile of items someone was drop transferring. I remember there was a Sionache`s Partisan and a couple Lambent pieces. Now, this wouldn't be a scummy story if I didn't shamelessly those items... But I think the worst part was a few minutes later, when the guy showed up and started /shouting to the zone if anyone saw his missing items and I did not speak up. His pleas grew increasingly desperate, "I swear I'll buy it back off you!" but still, I sat there silently.
That was 15+ years ago and I still feel horrible when I remember that.

Some of these posts are always interesting to read, as it outlines the narcissism and borderline sociopathy that the seemingly majority of people have when it suits them or if they can get away with it. No true sense of honor whatsoever, ultimately only thinking of themselves. At least some of them feel regret, but that doesn't inherently mean they won't do it again.

Red is different and I can see how titty babies might not like it.
So because he had the nerve to enter a zone without sending you a /tell you killed him. Yeah you're right, red is where all the mature players go. Great logic there lmao

No just a pvp noob who wanted to share his unexceptional story of group ganking a guy. OMG YOU GUYS KILLED HIM LOL!
I could share ACTUAL pvp stories from RZ that were more interesting. Like the time my monk killed this other guy in Guk and I looted his ikky bp and dropped it just to let it rot out of spite since I already had one.
P99 red is for pussies! That's not real EQ pvp. Stick to league of legends where you can play against a player base of more than 50....

Back in the day on live, on Vallon Zek, I exploited a few bugs in the game. For months, if you cast invisibility on your magician pet, and then burnout, the pet would stay permanently invisible, even while attacking. I also set up camp in Feerott at level 12, and being a gnome, was able to duck and crawl completely inside of trees, so that in addition to having a completely invisible pet, I couldn't really be targeted by the hundreds and hundreds of Ogres, Trolls and Dark Elves that were 4-8 levels lower than me that I killed at the skeleton ruins.

Back on Prexus, an RL friend of mine used to share my account back on live during luclin era. One of my guildies, a ranger named Tanithalis (spelling?) gave us his login info so that if he wasn't around we could play his char and duo together for AA farming.
Well after a few months of realizing what a pile of shit luclin was, we decided it was time to quit and RMT. We also decided to strip all the non no drop stuff off of tanithalis for extra cash. Stuff like COF, Fungi, etc. Probably ended up netting us a few extra hundred dollars in the end.
15 years later and I still feel bad about it. If you're out there Tanithalis... I'm sorry!

On red, inviting people to a "sebilis group" and as soon as they zone in kill them
- asking people to /duel so i could "OT hammer proc" and kill them.
- telling porters to come "pick me up in OT for a port" and kill them when they arrive\
- ask for a port, when you land, kill the porter after you get the port
- Offering free ports, and porting people to wrong zones and gating
- this guy in my guild was worth a ton of points on the leaderboard, he got low hp tanking mobs for the group so i /guildremoved him and dropped a HARM TOUCH on his head
-
on blue, asking morons(all levels) to /duel them to "OT hammer proc" and killing them
- tell people you want to buy their item they are auctioning, but claim you're in a zone like...kaladim or lake rathe...have them run there to find out they got trolled and you're not actually buying the item

I remember being in a group that had waited what seemed like forever for the Frogluk Scryer to spawn. I mean forever! It felt like we had killed a thousand Shaman placeholders. The guys in the groups were getting in serious trouble with their wives. The minute the Scryer spawned some guy came running in, grabbed it and poof they were gone. We send him a nice tell saying, please sir, we were patiently waiting on that Scryer. Can we have him back?
Sure he said. But he also brought a Gaz Knight back with him. We tried to fight it but it hit so HARD. We tried to run away, but it ran after us so FAST. That Gaz Knight just destroyed our exhausted group.
I think we all logged. Half of us quit EQ.
But I decided to persevere on...
A couple days later, I was in Karana on my Elf Ranger when I get a tell from this guy asking me to help him kill a Named centaur. He was so excited, but I was only a lowbie ranger and I told him this.
He's too tough for me I said, still hurting from getting a Gaz Knight trained on me a few days earlier.
He kept saying truust me. Use your bow, bro. Well, he called me bro, so I had to help. Its a code thing you see.
But that centaur was so FAST. I couldn't get away from him and he hit so HARD! I tried everything, but I was so tired and I died.
I was so mad I quit EQ right then and there.. ;)
(Just kidding here of course, but I loved the stories and the regrets. Couldn't help but have some fun with them).

Rolled up a half elf warrior of innoruuk on the red server. No regrets there, it was the reddest combo I could think of!
Having out levelled decaying skeletons, now rocking a two handed sword and cloth armour, I wanted to try my lucky at the zombie camp. There was already someone there. It was a dark elf, so I played nice as it was nek forest and he was a favoured of innoruuk; I asked if he wanted to share.
He said there were only enough zombies for one and he was agnostic. Naturally, while his pet was fighting a zombie I killed him and took his camp.
I don't actually feel bad about that; this is how I view red is meant to operate: play normally and resolved disputes with pvp.
Another time, me and 2 friends were playing high way men at the sisters camp in lesser fay. We'd plug away at bandits while someone else in zone did the sisters. When we felt they had accumulated sufficient platinum we would head over to their camp and demand their money or their life.
They would never give their money, so we always took it (and their life). One guy was so rustled that all his hardly earnt plat was taken he rolled a level 1 wizard and trained the dark elf camp on us. This was during the Eunomia period, so we ate the train and petitioned him. Never saw him again. I think we got him banned for training. That part I do regret.

I like it. Yeah he probably lost that account but he probably rerolled also. Red isn't supposed to be about playing too nice unless you're XP'ing together to grind up to the 50s.
People used to build reputations on being uncooperative. Chewie in Lower Guk if you ever met him, did so much to keep people out of there it was funny. I think he had a few SKs that covered most level ranges in there. Not sure if he got banned for it but he used to fear the undead frogs and start a train with them if he was out of range.
Food for thought if the discord server ever launches (no staff interference, if you die you're dead however it happens and however "illegal" it is on blue)

My first duel on live. I feared the person and they ran halfway across zone into a sand giant. Lost exp. A year later I triggered the giant spawn in Velious and they ran right to a group. She was in it. A few years later I married her IRL.

When I was new to EQ and playing a Wood Elf Druid, I was exploring WC, enjoying my new SoW spell. I accidentally wandered too close to the shadowed men camp and they almost killed me as I trained them to the WC/Kith zoneline. It was night time.
As I'm about to zone into kith, a group of low health players zoned over and into my train. I zone into Kith and see the departing (and thankfully not aggroing) bunch of dark elves walking back into the forest.
Then came the /tells from the people that zoned into WC, saying I killed them with my shadowed men train.
Alas, all I could really do was offer SoWs and teen-level druid buffs for their CRs.

I like in EQ how you are not the protagonist, but they do provide some ideas of what to do to get started.
You spawn with your newbie tunic quest. That quest takes you to an area with a bunch of NPCs, where some will give you quests to get out in the field and get killing. That gets you a bunch of drops like skins and stuff which you realise you can turn into armor, etc.
I know people don't like hand-holdy games, but I tried Uthgard the other day and you just spawn there with no 'hey head to this area to get started' note. I walked around trying to talk to NPC but there were no obvious tasks (turns out one npc you could whisper 'task' to even though he had no text to prompt doing so). I found it hard to get into a game where there was no immediate motivation provided to me to get stuck in; I was quite happy /dancing at the city centre with nothing to do!
I'm a big Warhammer (tabletop) fan. I never got into Warhammer online because I knew there was server problems, etc at launch and by the time I was interested it had shut down. I'd give that mmo a go if an emu came out, I watched friends play and it seemed pretty darn fun!
I don't tend to enjoy the games where you are lvl 1 newb in an MMO and the first NPC says to you (like every other new starter) OMG it's Anakin Skywalker, here to return balance to the force! You the awesomes! Go kill this wolf!

I can't say that I have any regrets bc EQ is where trolling was birthed so I learned to troll hard...but there were some very mean things I may have participated in to some extent in live...
For instance, on one occasion, around kunark when there were very few 60's and epics were just starting to bloom. My friend had a druid and he came up to me with a charmed griffin in wc, he said he was mad at a guard and was gonna go kill it with his pet so he wanted me to buff it. So I buffed it with lvl 60 cleric buffs. He then proceeded to an random enchanter and asked for speed of shissar in the tunnel, he then gated. Needless to say rampage ensued and over half the tunnel died before someone showed up to slay it, it must have went from the front to back of the tunnel 3 times destroying people for about 30 minutes.
On another occasion, I was logged on to my mage and my friend found a newbie who he lured into EK with dreams of phat lewtz. I CoH'd him with lev off the cliff, and he fill to his death. He then logged in another character and grouped with the mage and told him he saw a guy kill him and was sorry and he would help him get his corpse. As soon as he got to EK he joined the group and I summoned him again and he died a second time. He then logged onto my cleric and told him he had a resurrection ability and was going to rez him...well you can only guess he fell for it a third time...I think we cried ourselves offline we were laughing so hard.
I have no regrets...it was hilarious...even to think about it still...Never got any trouble, I don't think they ever reported, or the gm's were too busy to care. My friend did reroll like 3 times though he had a really bad rep, he enjoyed torturing puppies in EQ.
edit: Also, note this was not a pvp server. You dont need to be on a pvp server to kill people...

I was only about 14 at the time. This was shortly after Luclin released and I had been playing EQ for a few years. I started getting bored and would search on server forums for anyone that posted their yahoo email. I had a brute force program that used dictionaries and encyclopedias with different combinations to find out their passwords. I would leave the program running and when I came home from school there would be a few accounts cracked.
I would then use it to obtain their EQ accounts and many had level 60's with Fungi, Cloak of Flames, etc. I would sell their stuff and then trade the platinum from that server for platinum on a different server to twink out characters. Then I would abandon their account. For the most part I'm pretty sure everyone got their accounts back and were item reimbursed by the GM's.
There was one lady who's account I obtained and she sent me a message from a friends account while I was on her character. She was part of a high end guild and she thanked me for stealing her account. She said she had been horribly addicted to EQ and when she could no longer login it made her step back and look at her life for the first time in awhile. She seemed genuine about it and wasn't just trying to win me over. She did get her account back and everything was fine but I'm not sure what happened to her afterwards.
I haven't done anything like that since and only did it for a few weeks but yeah I regret it.

Back when I was leveling Filbus, I was in KC with some fellow guildies, but it was totally packed. We had a full party of 6 in their mid 50s and I found out that efreeti was open. In our group at KC was a druid named Onioncraze, but he was an unecessary addition to the efreeti expedition. I was the leader of the party, and after he ported us to Lavastorm, I kicked him from group. We took efreeti without him. I'm pretty sure he left BDA shortly thereafter because he felt he didn't belong. I feel pretty bad about it, but now that I see he left BDA I feel better cause I saved him a lot of agony..
RED-
Back when trying red was a legitimate thing (following deruban and the massive xp bonus) me and some friends were in Sol B royals... Some annoying rogue named Ragnaros joined our group. The DPS was a welcome addition, but he was so loudmouthed and annoying that the party all whispered each other independently and decided to lynch him. Ragnaros came back to the ent and begged us to be let back into party. He was really cool about the lynching and seemed like he wanted to just be accepted. Eventually we cleared the shamans and got him to his corpse...
then we killed him again!

I don't exactly know why, but it's your simple story that made me cackle out loud like a witch brewing up something good.

My biggest EQ regret was actually playing the game
