View Full Version : Starting on Red

Been playing P99 for a couple months and just not loving Blue. I was drawn to blue for the population but I have decided that's not a good reason. So I will be giving Red a shot. Reading the forums I'm not worried about the trollish people in fact I like that there are some vial toxic people on Red... a pvp server needs villains. Ok so to the point... I am fairly new to EQ pvp having only dabbled in it back in the day. What are a couple good classes starting out in P99 red? I am obviously starting out as a noon in rags with no gear or money so will like to have something with a little survivability both in pvp and in pve. Also would like to know what are the most common classes on Red. Are there any good starter guilds that will be able to help advise me along the way? Sorry I'm sure this type of post has been beat to death but wanted to open my own thread so that I could ask my own followup questions if needed. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

When I tried out red, thunderdome was very helpful to me and got me geared on my little noob enchanter. I would give them a shot.

Druid is probably the class that's going to get the most votes.

Thunderdome is a troll guild now. Contact Balom or Avomon to get started and try to join his guild <Sanctuary>

Lots of new people leveling up right now.

Druid is a great first class, very versatile in PvE and PvP, but on red you'll find that you need to be able to play many classes at high level.

You're going to die a lot learning how to PvP, don't let it get you down.

Awsome advice thank you guys. I have never played a druid a whole lot so maybe that will be the ticket. I normally play high lvl necro and SK but again not familiar yet with the pvp mechanics. Im oddly excited to get rolled in pvp lol. I do realize it's not the arcade style pvp that other mmo's I won't name are. Will be starting my new adventure tonight!

Take this guys advice, druid is a good first class.
Use /ooc its global through out each zone.
Find a higher lvl druid and ask for pointers on pvp. A couple quick questions can save you alot of pvp deaths.

Good luck. Worst part is getting over the hump because everquest with pvp is a conpletely different game strat wise.

So I got as far as making my new to on on Red last night before my wife and kids ruined my new adventure...something about spending time, movie, dinner I don't remember was a big blurr... ok so I made the druid and pretty excited about getting into the thick of things. I believe I read something about red server having an xpow bonus is this true and how much of a percentage is it? Just curious. Also with that being said is there any other things about red to know? No combat areas or specific zones to avoid or to frequent etc.

It's a 50% flat XP bonus compared to blue if you're soloing, and a bonus 40% per person you group with on top of that. Full groups are an amazing thing. This only lasts up to 51 though, from there the grind gets more real.

Typically you'll find others in places like Crushbone, Mistmoore and maybe Unrest. All the myths of fungi twinks around every corner are just that these days, most of them don't log in anymore so there won't be much of an interruption if any :p

Wow yeah a full group would rocket you through the lvls. Lol I will have to learn to be careful accidentally targeting teammates not to whack them in the middle of a fight. Sounds like once I get going I'll head over towards crush bone and check out the action there. Thanks for the zone tips.

I recently came back and tried to level a character on blue to play with my younger brother, it was just brutal. Yeah red has a smaller population but the world feels more, well, "real" that way. 200 people in EC is just ridiculous, like 80 people in crushbone and not a mob to be had, all groups are full and the exp is so slow compared to red rofl.

IDK maybe because I'm a dad who works a full time job and has fitness hobbies and thus have less time to grind is really contrasting now with the unemployed teenager I was in 1999 or even the college student i was on blue before red launched, but the difference is very apparent to how much I can get accomplished in a relatively small evening gaming session between red and blue.

Coming from red I find it so mind boggling that people would afk right infront of the crushbone castle for literally hours, however people on blue are more likely to buff or port you but theyre also more likely to simply ignore others. IDK people complain about the toxicity of the red community but it seems like an actual community to me, blue feels like going to the mall a week before Christmas.

When you have a loose 15pp start carrying around one or a few of these:

http://wiki.project1999.com/Crystallized_Pumice

Keep them handy in an inventory slot, use them to scare other players and remove negative effects from yourself as well.

Any earned money should be spent on whatever gear you can get your hands on with +Magic Resist. Snares/roots = death whilst combating MoB's and Players.

Godspeed young one and use /ignore judiciously for the wormbrains in global chat. <3

Thank you Feanol. That is the kind of advice I'm looking for. On blue you just never think of these sort of things but a clicky cancel magic items is definitely a must have.

Avomon is a Saint, be wherever that guy is

He gates iksars to Crushbone, powerlevels noobs and protects them from griefers until lvl 20

A+ dude

Red would be way better if pop were 300-400. But as it stands now, it's a boring sack of shit. Terrible community too for the most part.

The same notion, regarding the low pop, has kept me from coming back to red until just now. Look, i see people claiming to be interested in starting on red for the first time, or red veterans who claim they would like to return if only the pop wasnt so low, IMHO if one should fall into either one of these schools of thought, go ahead and boot up red and be a part of the solution to this cyclical self fulfilling prophecy. I mean yeah, a 300-400 person server would be closer to ideal but a 200 person server should people start dripping back in is a good start.

It needs a GM event to end all GM events, an event that'll re-engage everyone who used to play.

Lol well I'm glad to see a few others beginning to consider red as I have. So update on my little druid. I have been doing a bunch of crappie after work in RL so have been slow to start. I'm up to lvl 8 and it is obvious the xp bonus is on the server! I haven't put much time in so far and already lvl 8. So far every time I see anyone else I just avoid them for now. I'm about to attempt to dive into crush bone and give that a shot. I have unfortunately not gotten to lucky on loot having only found a little cloth armor and bought a couple pieces of rawhide but hopefully will fill in some of these slots soon from the orcs. I play around 5ish central time usa for anyone interested in duo.

The CB belt hand in isn't so great on red99, however the patchwork armor will certainly fill some empty slots if you're the right size :)

no intent to hijack the thread, but in response to the comment above, does the 50% xp modifier apply to quests or just mob killing xp? Are there any worthwhile xp quests left in the game?

Because the majority of the ones that make up the 100 or so are the worst of the bunch. There is a reason they are the only ones remaining on that server.

Really, ideally, the server needs a full refresh. That'll bring interest back into the server. It's so topheavy atm and no signs of getting better.

As stated yes I do believe a pvp server should have some villains and a bit of greifing. That's what the game mechanics of a pvp server allow. As for population that does not scare me away and it shouldn't anyone. Yes it be nice for a little more population but in the end to have hundreds of people around me at all times is not 100% or even 50% of the reason I like playing eq in the first place. As for the server being top heavy...what mmo do you know of that any of its servers are not top heavy? They all end up this way. I'm a casual gamer so it's just something I have come to terms with. There are always going to be people that dedicate crazy amount of time to a game and seemingly have it all... also these servers are old so even a casual guy like myself that has been around for the better part of a decade will be a top end player just by defalt. Anyway I really like all the comments on this thread and keep some of the tips comming! I'll take any and all advice someone is willing to give.
