The EQClassicHD team is: Cucumbers, PaulG, Sorn, and Zaela
EQClassicHD is an EverQuest retexturing project that features higher resolution textures for player characters.
Features:
· All player character related textures (armor, handheld items, weapons, faces) have been upscaled, retouched, or completely redone by Cucumbers, PaulG, and Sorn. Textures redone in the past by Nysus, Xevin, and Joyelle are also included.
· All player character textures have been converted to .dds to conserve space, memory, and allow for mipmaps.
· Various animation & epic particle fixes by Zaela.
· Transparency fixes pre-applied & minor Velious helmet visor tweaks.

Installation (easy-mode):
Only works on Windows based computers
· Extract EQClassicHD.zip to a folder location you are comfortable with (not your Everquest directory).
· Run install.bat (if Windows stops you, select the “Run anyway” option).
· Select your Everquest directory, wait for the prompt to state it has finished installation.
· To uninstall, simply run uninstall.bat (if Windows stops you, select the “Run anyway” option).
Installation (manual-mode):
· Navigate to your Everquest directory. Backup the following files:
gequip.s3d
gequip2.s3d
global_chr.s3d
global4_chr.s3d
global17_amr.s3d
global18_amr.s3d
global19_amr.s3d
global20_amr.s3d
global21_amr.s3d
global22_amr.s3d
global23_amr.s3d

· Extract EQClassicHD.zip to a folder location you are comfortable with.
· Copy the aforementioned files into your Everquest directory (overwrite if you left the old ones in).
· To uninstall, copy the backed up files back into your Everquest directory and overwrite.

I still don't get whether the blade textures are included or not and what exactly the difference is.
Elementals are not, at least this I found out :-)

To install the redone blades, follow the same process for installing the elementals, but add them to the "gequip" S3D archive instead.
The completely redone elementals and blades we decided to keep separate just because they aren't classic (not even a little classic), but I think they're awesome. The elemental and blade textures included in EQClassicHD are upscaled, and the blades are slightly recolored and retextured, but the difference isn't as noticeable.

This should be fixed now - if you were experiencing this issue when using install.bat, feel free to redownload using the original links.
Couple notes about the installer: it will request administrative privileges, so if you have EQ running it will probably black out your EQ window (just a forewarning because that's super annoying for some people). It will automatically create backups of all of your current textures, so to make uninstalling much easier it's recommended that you use install & uninstall.bat. They can be run just like any executable - double-click, or right-click and select Open.

A few more notes about install stuff - you can extract the S3Ds into your EQ directory and overwrite your current stuff if you want, but then if you want to uninstall EQ Classic HD you'll have to manually replace those S3Ds with the originals. Here are links to the original EQ textures in case you need to do this and you forgot to backup your stuff beforehand:

EQClassicHD's installer & uninstaller will only work if some certain conditions are met:
install.bat conditions: before install.bat will run, it must be outside of your EQ directory and in a folder with the downloaded install files.
uninstall.bat conditions: before uninstall.bat will run, you must have already run the installer which will have created backups of all of your current textures.
So to make things easy, here's what I recommend: unzip the EQClassicHD folder somewhere, then simply run install.bat within that folder. It will auto-backup all of your current stuff, and if you want to stop using EQ Classic HD, all you have to do is run uninstall.bat to restore everything back to how it was before.

I appreciate all the work that went into this but I'm not a fan of the artistic choices that were made in the weapon / item re-textures.

Yes, but you'd have to do your own legwork to separate out what you want from our textures, and then manually install them using EQGExport (https://www.dropbox.com/s/hxdxlln87dqylhr/EQGExport.zip)/EQ-Zip (https://github.com/Shendare/EQZip/releases/download/v1.5.2/EQ-Zip_v1.5.2.zip) (or S3DSpy (https://sourceforge.net/projects/eqemulator/files/OpenZone/S3DSpy%201.2) if you're on Windows XP).

Seems like I'm rather consistently crashing on zone (30% of the time) since installing this. Anyone else experiencing? My full-fledged PC should be way more than enough to handle a small texture upgrade - plenty of RAM available, GTX 780, etc.
EDIT: Most frequent seems to be in and out of Cabalis, if that matters.

I haven't had this issue and my computer is super crappy. It MAY have something to do with some of the connection issues EQEmu's been having as of late.

That would've been from Chebby's texture package (http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121490) from 2013 - I think Nysus/Xevin did the faces in that pack, but it was only four human male and one halfling male face. All have been replaced with Sornfaces™ in EQ Classic HD.

The Titanium client suffers from memory bloat which cumulatively adds up the longer you play, which is why the more times you zone or switch characters the higher the chance is that you'll end up crashing as it writes more and more data into memory. And your physical memory makes no difference - whether you have 2 GB or 32 GB of onboard RAM, the client will throw an exception and crash to desktop all the same once it gets near 2 GB (roughly 1.8 GB) of memory usage, due to being a 32-bit application.
So this is a problem that has always existed in Titanium, and you'll experience it regardless of which textures you're using, though you'll experience it more often if you install the high-resolution Trilogy textures or other upscaled/custom textures. Our textures are more client-friendly than the 4x upscaled "realistic but better clarity" package that Chebby released in 2013 because we've converted a bunch of stuff to DDS, which decompresses in real-time much more efficiently due to mipmapping, therefore using less overall memory.
We did have some crashing while zoning issues early on in development when zoning between certain memory-intensive zones such as TT/EJ, which we were able to solve via DDS compression, so it is possible Cabilis or its surrounding zones are another culprit. Will have to do some testing to figure out if it's a real issue though.

might be worth checking the compression on the iksar texture too. There are a lot of iksar in Cabilis, so even though iksar is a global file the problem may only announce it self where many of these lizard men at gathered (their home town).

Did some testing on a lower-end Core2Duo with 4 GB RAM and found no issues - was able to zone in and around Cabilis 20 consecutive times without a crash:

Thank you for looking into this/testing, Paul. I'll try a fresh install...though later the night I posted I ran the uninstall.bat for the mod and went back to having no zone crashes at all since. Maybe just some deep-seated software incompatibility that my game doesn't like. I could try some of those other fixes for general EQ issues - I'm not using WinEQ, limiting threads or FPS, etc.

A request - would it be possible to either create or borrow graphics from other parts of the game to give an appearance of a vendor area for barren merchants? That is, take parts of Neriak for example. Many of the vendors have their walls appearing to hold items. Yet take many of the merchants in Freeport that stand in front of a rock wall, bare and uninspiring.
This is scattered throughout the game - some merchants are stacked and others look like they have deep pockets for carrying all of their vendor wares.

Probably not, and if it was we wouldn't bother for two reasons: we're only interested in improving upon The Vision™'s version of classic EverQuest art without adding anything unnecessary, and the work load would be unrealistic. If we ever decide to upscale zone textures, which is something we've talked about since more or less day one, we won't be doing anything beyond upscaling.
The reason this probably wouldn't work is because areas such as interior walls typically don't use their own specific texture or set of textures - they often use one texture which is tiled and reused in many other areas of the zone. So a likely result of adding merchant wares to a wall behind a vendor would be that art showing up on the outside of various building/zone walls, or along the entirety of that building's interior, floors and ceilings included, for example. There's no way to designate which textures each model/polygon/cluster of polygons uses without altering the .zon files themselves, or the client code, which is both beyond our capability and unsafe for the purposes of P99 cheat-detection.

EQClassicHD is nilbog-approved because it is a) completely optional, and b) "mostly classic" (direct quote) and in keeping with the spirit of classic EQ. It does not interfere with or manipulate game mechanics other than making everything look crisper.
It's totally okay to install! :)

First off, thanks for all your hard work on the new textures.
Secondly is it possible to make high res versions of the spell effects? I've been considering doings some tests of it myself but unsure what and where to edit. I'm sure there is stuff in the titanium client that's unused in p99.

Cucumbers attempted this at one point but apparently the client didn't take well to rendering some of the upscaled particle textures and crashed, so it could be that some particle textures are upscalable but others aren't. So theoretically it's possible, and we still might figure out a solution to upscale all spell particles. As a side note, we did upscale all weapon particles and those are included in the package.

This really should have its own sticky. I've started to see some crashing issues but also have a really old install that had EQLite run on it as well as the high-res texture pack and the transparency/visor fix applied. (Made sure to verify the client wasn't consuming over 2GB of memory and that was not the case.)

Just to clarify, the Titanium client physically can't use 2 GB of system memory - what you'd want to look for as to what would indicate a potential crash is more like 1.5 GB. I think the threshold is somewhere around 1.8 GB before it actually throws an exception and crashes.
It's possible that texture caching has something to do with crashing, but we can only guess as to what kind of issues it'd be causing. Perhaps an old texture cache is somehow conflicting with the new textures and causing the client to use too much system memory. If this is the case, you'll want to clear out your cache by doing the following (disclaimer: this may or may not actually solve anything):
1. Disable texture caching via the login screen options menu (make sure to click Finish).
2. Reload the client and fully sign into the game.
3. Camp out of the game and close the client (do not /quit).
4. Enable texture caching via the login screen options menu (make sure to click Finish).
5. Reload the client and fully sign into the game.
6. Camp out of the game and close the client (do not /quit).
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for good measure.

I was messing around with the takp client a few days earlier, where texture caching had an in-game toggle. (Coming back to p99 I wasn't sure the setting was even valid as I was too lazy to look in the login options/.ini file) I had similar issues on takp when using the updated models from this thread. I think over time the cache has just replaced itself as the crashes haven't happened for a long time now.
That said, I would say the official high res zone texture update, the helm transparency patch as well as this character model texture update have all played nicely together.

It's definitely possible that enabling/disabling texture caching in the Titanium client doesn't actually do anything - I haven't tested this extensively enough to know for sure. The texture compression setting definitely doesn't do anything, and it's possible that mipmapping is always enabled regardless of the client setting.

How do I edit this to show the original gurdian robe gfx? Feels much better.
Load the original Titanium global_chr.s3d in EQ-Zip (https://github.com/Shendare/EQZip/releases/download/v1.5.2/EQ-Zip_v1.5.2.zip) and export clk701-706.bmp. Now load our global_chr.s3d in EQ-Zip and import the extracted textures, selecting overwrite, with auto-convert to DDS disabled in preferences. Save the S3D and put it in your EQ directory if it isn't already there.

Yeah.
Looing at the low rez version, looks like there should be a larger, strongly contrasting shadow around the bright silver pieces to give them a more protruding appearance.
The break between the bands and the boss should be a shadow on the band, not the main shield colour too.
Basically the boss looks like it should be fastening a cross to the shield, and that cross's arms buldge away from the body of the shield at the centre of each arm.

It's a thing I cobbled together in a scripting language called batch, and yes as Lord Cucumbers says it is in the downloaded files. Please follow the install instructions on our Wiki page (https://wiki.project1999.com/EQClassicHD#How_do_I_install_it.3F) for more info.

Our textures were upscaled using a superior denoise algorithm and converted to DDS for memory conservation so you'll crash less often, whereas Chebby's texture package (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121490) from 2013 will cause your client to crash more often. Our package includes a ton of completely redone textures which are mostly true to classic aesthetics - basically all held items including weapons and shields have been painstakingly pored over and manually improved. Our package includes Sorn's masterfully reworked character faces (see the screenshot thread). Our package includes all transparency patcher fixes (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87281) preapplied, as well as all of Zaela's animation and particle fixes, and a litany other miscellaneous transparency, semi-transparency, and cosmetic fixes which are all unique to our package. Tentatively - we haven't started the second phase of the project yet which entails upscaling all zone textures.

Guard and NPC textures are handled as zone textures, so mobs and NPCs will get upscaled once we get around to zones. Each race also has a unique vendor face which is handled as a zone texture - hopefully Sorn will get around to retouching those at some point as well. No real plans to begin work on this stuff at the moment, so it will be quite awhile before we get around to it. Computer technology also has some catching up to do before this kind of work won't be a colossal pain in the ass.

Also, Chebby (the guy who did the first texture upgrade package) started work on zones at one point, but only ever uploaded West Freeport and Ak`Anon, so those are available if you want to upgrade those zone textures:

hey so i moved my eq folder from program files to another location and it works fine now. Apparently having it in x86 program files caused the issue?

This appears to be the case - thanks for the log submittal though, always a huge help in troubleshooting these things. Thinking I'm going to add a requirement to the installer that the user move their EQ directory out of Program Files before our mod can be installed. Seems as though there are cases in which an otherwise functioning installation of Titanium will run into access restriction issues when new textures are installed.

if anyone plays on live, wanted to share that you can also use these on live. you just run the launcher, wait until it finishes updating, but don't press 'play' yet. now overwrite the files in the eq directory, and then press 'play'. you have to do that every session, but it works!

You can bypass the launcher, you only need to do this after a patch.

Can't believe it's been thiiiiis long since we managed to finish all these textures.
Scrolling through all my previous work on the faces makes me both smile and wince but I'm still hella proud of our teamwork. Also that griffon shield continues to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever had to retouch. Did I say retouch? I definitely redrew the damn thing from scratch.

Hey HD elf pixel fans, I have poked the link and it's working for me. I'm not sure what the issue is. When you open it, it should give you a white window and you need to find the download button on the top right to grab the file.
I'm told it popped up invalid for someone earlier but works now. Might be an issue with google itself. If this happens again, please specify what you're seeing so I can troubleshoot a bit better.

Can also confirm its giving an access Denied. The link will work for the creator as they are authorised to use the link. If you use it from a different machine/account you'll find your link doesn't work. Also the download link in your Signature is returning a 404 not found.
