I played on a different SWG server (Bespin?) and had a lot of fun, but SWG is a very different game. It has its own appeal for sure, but it's no EverCrack.

That's why I asked how many Jedi are on it. I was told that there used to be only 1 jedi and 1 sith jedi. Then they changed it so anyone could become a jedi and it made all the other classes kinda less interesting. Well except bounty hunter maybe.
I've never played it but it sounded like it was a pretty decent star wars mmo at the start of it's production.

there were more than 1 ea but ya they were pretty rare. it was an extremely unpleasant grind to by a Jedi, I think i did 20% of it before saying naw. I had a lot of fun with my wookie bounty hunter though.

Just to explain to any non-SWGers how that worked, imagine that the game is kind of like EQ, except instead of being a level 1 or level 60 warrior you could be a level 30 warrior/level 30 wizard. In other words, you could be any class you wanted, but if you really wanted to be the best in that class you had to put most of your levels into it.
To become a Jedi you had to level to 60 in four (five?) different classes. You could find out the first four if you were rich or lucky enough to acquire a fungi-tunic-level-rarity item called a holochron, but even if you got four of those you still would have no way of knowing what fifth class you needed ... so you basically had to level every class to 60 if you wanted a jedi.
It was insanely difficult ... and a perfect way to keep Jedi properly rare and keep the MMOG world feeling like Star Wars. But then they revamped the game, made Jedi a "normal" class, and everyone left.

In other words, you could be any class you wanted, but to gain a new class you'd have to lose "levels" in the old one.

Triple post; Loramin still confirmed bad about welfare Jedi a dozen years later ;).
Normally I'd rate a 'don't play p99' thread as 1 star, but bonus star is deserved if this is an early swg emu. I started at Jump to Lightspeed and then they rehauled the game several times over, including once turning it into a completely different game and effectively killing all their loyal customers' characters.

There were more than one game killing patch in SWG. I think the worst one was where Smed decided to try to turn it into WoW. What a disaster.

There was the Combat Upgrade, which was the beginning of the end, and then the New Game Enhancements, which was the killing blow.
To get Jedi in the early game, as one person explained, you had to master a certain number of professions (And the number you had to do kept increasing as more jedi's were unlocked, making it even harder). Once you were lucky enough to master the last golden profession, you had a character slot unlocked to become a Jedi (So, once again, you're starting over completely). This character was essentially Level 1, no skills or professions, and had the Jedi profession skill trees to start working up. To make it even harder, Jedi's were KoS to all players, and if they ever used their force powers near another player, they were automatically put onto the Bounty Hunter terminals where any BH Profession player could track them down.
The only way to really get a high level Jedi was to have your first character drop a House in the middle of nowhere with low level npc's, giving the Jedi char admin permissions, and level up there, hoping to god no player characters came close enough to get you BH listed.
If you managed to get your jedi high enough undetected then you can maybe get more ballsy since you could defend yourself against a bounty hunter a little better.
Also, Jedi's had permadeath.

jedi had permadeath after 6(?) deaths
and too many people got mad so they changed it to massive exp loss, which no other profession/race had
i remember knowing of people who ended up grinding over 30 professions to master by the time they hit the right one for their silent holocron
but jedis were fucking monsters when they were knight/master status

I quite liked how the initial plan was to have force sensitive / Jedi as permadeath non-twink No Time to Rez style.

It was a different time when devs thought players could handle not being snowflakes who deserved everything handed to them on a platter.
Then WoW came along and every fucktard who could log in 30 minutes a week screamed at the top of their lungs if they werent rewarded instantly at all times with endgame content because they paid a subscription fee.
And every mmorpg has been a wreck since.

So you're mad because a business followed a model that generated tens to hundreds of millions of dollars a month in revenue?

How'd that work out for them?
Ahldagor would be just like every other mmorpg wannabe dev. "All we have to do to make millions is copy everything about WoW!" Few months later... "what did we do wrong?"
Even Smed acknowledged it was the worst mistake in mmorpg history.

Did you forget the cemented fandom for the Warcraft RTS games that Blizzard already had? What worked for WoW wouldn't necessarily work for another, less established brand which has been the case.

Yes, but in my defense it's so easy to overlook the tiny fanbase of ...Star Wars.

You'd have to figure how the age range of the fanbase spreads compared to who would have likely purchased, participated in the game.
