View Full Version : Question on race/class experience modifers

Hey everyone, first I want to say this is the best thing that has ever been created.

With that aside I have been reading up on some of the classic mechanics, I played a bit of it on release but I was really young, and by that time Kunark was already being released. One this I found interesting was a post on eqemulator about this server. There were people talking about exp modifiers that are inherint to classes/races. There is a post by Nilbog that goes as follows...

As far as penalties are concerned, I responded in the other thread but not this one.

Here's a copy of the information

Code:
29 //experience modifiers based on race and class, used if USE_RACE_CLASS_XP_MODS is defined
30 // hum bar eru elf hie def hef dwa tro ogr hal gno iks, vah frog
31 float race_modifiers[15] = { 100.0f, 105.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f, 120.0f, 115.0f, 95.0f, 100.0f, 120.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f}; // Quagmire - Guessed on iks and vah
32
33 // war cle pal ran shd dru mnk brd rog shm nec wiz mag enc bst bes
34 float class_modifiers[16] = { 9.0f, 10.0f, 14.0f, 14.0f, 14.0f, 10.0f, 12.0f, 14.0f, 9.05f, 10.0f, 11.0f, 11.0f, 11.0f, 11.0f, 10.0f, 10.0f};

legend: if smaller numbers are faster exp, then halfling warrior is fastest!

So I guess my question is whether or not this is correct for the server. Nilbog mentioned that halflings would be the fastest but others noted that they (and rangers) are supposedly the slowest levelers..not the fastest. This is crucial for me because I want to make a paladin but I am skeptical to start one if they level at ~2/3 the pace. Also I want to solo but my suspicion is that the server is overpopulated with casters, but again this is just speculation and may not be the case.

Hybrid Penalty: 38% - Bard, Ranger, Shadow Knight and Paladin.

Race Penalty: Troll and Ogre. Troll for there regeneration and Ogre for there big stats bonus.

Halfling +5% exp. Warrior +5% exp. Halfling Warriors level 10% faster.

Theres some other minor ones, like High Elf Enchanters -10% I think? And obviously if you go Troll/Ogre + SK, you will level 58% slower, and you will cry yourself to sleep.

The Situation

All pure casters should be -10%, not just HIE Enchanters.

There's a FAQ sticky at the top of this forum. One of the topics covered is experience bonuses and penalties.

Good luck with whichever race/class combo you choose.

The Situation

Also, there is an overpopulation of casters. Tanks can find groups pretty easily since they're in short supply.

Thanks Cormac I missed that sticky becuase I looked for the FAQ with the link at the very top which is futile. Hrmm, this is really a tough choice on which character to roll then. I'm not sure I can justify the monotomy of a warrior or penalties from the SK or PAL. Well thanks all I think this settled.

Seems like there is a slight lack of shamans and wizzies at high levels.

Tanks aren't toooo hard to come by at higher levels.

Mages/Necros/Druids there are quite a few of.

Rangers/Paladins/Rogues/Bards are fairly scarce.

I would say there is very very few 50 wizards.

They stack on each other Fattie SK is 66% and Halfling Warrior levels 16% faster

What are the experience penalties/bonuses?
By Race:
Troll -20%
Iksar -20%
Ogre -15%
Barbarian -5%
Halfling +5%

By Class:
Paladin / Shadowknight / Ranger / Bard -40%
Monk -20%
Wizard / Magician / Enchanter / Necromancer -10%
Rogue +9%
Warrior +10%

Exp penalties are multiplied not added, so a troll sk would be (1.4 x 1.2 = 1.68 or 68% penalty).

I hate the phrasing of penalty. It implies that someone with a 50% penalty receives half experience from kills. Which would end up being extremely severe for troll SKs! A 40% penalty means they require 40% more experience points. That means troll SKs have a 68% experience bonus because they get to enjoy the game 68% longer.

This kinda hurts to see put into words... :(

Do hybrid penalties come to play on how much exp you lose when you die? I've noticed that at least during hell lvls I'd lose alot less exp.

At 42 pain and suffering ate about 1 yellow (playing an ogre SK). Is this like 1 + half a yellow to, lets say, a human cleric? =o

Even as a Halfling rogue I was losing ~1 yellow at most levels over 30 (can't remember when it started to be that much). So I don't think the penalty or bonuses carry over to deaths.

I could be wrong, but based on my experiences and what you're saying it doesn't seem to be the case.

Ranger / Bard -40% exp bonus

Makes absolutely no sense to me, what is the reason for it?

I can understand:
Troll -20%
Iksar -20%
Ogre -15%
Warrior +10%

But not any of the others.
Monk -20% makes no sense either. Is it because of FD? I've seen tons of monks die from failed FD.

Class penalties are retarded and illogical and that's why they were removed.

Racial penalties make sense.

it's a relic of D&D which all MMO's are based off of. Fighters required the least XP hence the bonus for warriors.

Iksar = AC Bonus/Regen/night vision
Ogre = No frontal stuns/slam/night vision?

I've you've ever tanked as a non-ogre you learn to live with being stunned a lot. When you play an ogre and you realize how much you were getting stunned, you never turn back.

They took a lot of the mechanics from various MUD derivatives as well ...which of course is another derivative of D&D lol.

I was always under the impression that trolls and ogres got that massive penalty for getting so many more starting points than everyone else. Otherwise, there was no reason for every warrior/SK not to be one

So Rangers and Bards don't have an exp penalty anymore on this server?

He was referring to them being removed on Live (sometime after Luclin or PoP, i don't remember). They are still in effect on Project 1999.
