According to the wiki, backsmithing has a normal progression up until ornate chain then fine plate, it seems the easier, cheaper, ornate chain is trivial much lower then it should be, forcing people to rank off of fine plate.

i dont know if the wiki is wrong but if anyone has ranked blacksmithing up did you find this to be the case? are there recipes that are not cultural and fie plate aspiring blacksmiths can rank from 175-200's? Is this a bug?

When i did my GM blacksmithing, I didn't find any other way outside of cultural and Fine Steel. Overall, Fine Steel isn't that hard to work. Tailoring skill ups are pretty easy to make leather padding trivial, but farming pelts can be a little bit of a pain. i'd suggest farming the critters in Stonebrunt Mts. Never found less than LQ there.

The added benefit of Fine Steel is that the risk is minimal. Once you cross the 200 threshold, most of the stuff you are getting skill ups on will already be at 80%+ success chance, but yes, failures mean a hundred or more plat in instant loss.
