Anyone remember the real classic version of the necromancer pets? Basically it wasn't at level 24 that it would be a completely dark-boned pet, it was a slow progression of the skeleton pet becoming darker and darker. So at lvl 24ish it would be slightly dark boned, until 44ish where it would be completely dark boned. Just wondering if anyone actually remembers this

yeah, I know my old school necro never had a darkboned skellie at 24 lvl... When I seen them here it seemed odd to me but I thought maybe my memory was failing me? I think you right though.

This sounds like something that's an unavoidable limitation of the Titanium client ... but it also sounds cool so I hope I'm wrong.

Pretty sure it wasn't until level 39 that Necros had dark pets at all. I don't remember a slow progression. I just know it wasn't level 24. And I remember very clearly leveling at FM giant fort at level 33-35 on my necro in groups and seeing a level 39 necro with a dark pet soloing giants and saying that was badass and I couldnt wait to have that because I was so close.

I remember on live that Necro pets (maybe all pets) would obey an attack command no matter how far away from the mob. Let would run across the zone if needed. On p99 there’s a fairly short range the pet will engage the target. I don’t know when or why this was changed.

This would indicate Shadow Knights didn't have darkbone pets at all during the classic period. I played a Paladin and SK's barely existed so I can't personally recollect either way. Can anyone recall seeing level 49/50 Shadow Knights pre-Kunark with darkbone pets?

Answering myself, scouring the internet archive finds old forum posts from 1999/2000 indicating that level 49 Shadow Knights indeed had brown pets. So at least the level 29 Necromancer spell summoned a Darkbone-style skeleton as it does on P1999.

It's hard to know anything by self reports for sure. But sometimes I think p99 is actually harder than classic was (and I'm not just talking raid mobs).

I 100% agree. I too believe that the devs have made p99 more difficult to try and capture the classic feel of things. And as I've voiced in the past they're more prone to fix a bug that hinders players.

On the topic are you all sure you're not just mistaking red skeletons at mid/higher levels?

Texture data indicates 1 set of textures for light skeletons and 1 set of textures for dark

If true, they would have had to tint the textures based on level until they rolled over and used the dark skeleton model?

Doesn’t make much sense but not out of the realm of possibility

Damn awesome avatar on the last person's post hehehe. Anywayy I'm almost for certain they slowly turned dark boned over time. it wasnt a tint, it was more realistic than just tinting the skeleton. I have a fond memory of sitting at this frozen lake in Everfrost and someone had a skelly pet that was definitely in-between regular and dark boned
