Sadly I lost/destroyed my toys as a kid, so my Japanese die-cast steel toys which were expensive at the time are gone. I remember them fondly though. :(

Mighty Max toys were $5 for the smaller ones and $10 for the bigger ones. I used to work all week for 10 bucks and collect the bigger ones (doing chores for a few dollars for my cheap ass-step dad). To be clear I never said let's stop talking about toys and start talking about rape instead. Hell, I even included my favorite toy in the same post. All I said was that this was the exact prompt we used to start our workshops ... and everyone lost their damn minds.

While I love that Melon is actually thinking about the topic and not just dismissing it, this is exactly why I didn't want to try and explain things without doing a whole workshop. The idea is 100% not to say "boys shouldn't play with nerf guns because they'll rape" or anything like that.

All the workshop was about was looking at the toys we grew up with, because they reflect our society's gender roles. It's not about nerf guns are bad, it's about "why don't people give girls the cool stuff (like nerf guns) that they give to boys?" (And even then we never actually said that, it was just most people's natural reaction when they saw the boy toys on one side and the girl toys on the other.) At the end we did throw in some statistics about rape which (in the context of the workshop) naturally connected to the gender roles discussion, but even then it was only about offering facts to let people make up their own minds.

The takeaway was never to make anyone believe anything, especially not that nerf guns are bad: it was just intended to make you think about gender roles (and maybe, if we were lucky, whether they're good or not).

But as I said in my very first post, it was not my intent to bring up any of this unless the thread went to RnF; I just had people ask questions so I answered. no, it's not the same thing unfortunately ^^. yes, contraceptives are available and when used directed, birth control is highly effective. however, a 40% share of child births being claimed by single mothers indicates many women are no more capable of responsible use than they are of choosing dependable mates.

im on the largely vacant side of reason. i don't care whether it is accomplished by shame or law, so long as we do not continue subjecting women and children to undue hardships simply because some men want better access to sex. if we are not going to deter destructive behavior with shame, then it is morally incumbent upon us to safeguard against it with legislation. conditionally sterilize all persons at birth and then license parenting. then people, their families and society are free of the risks of unplanned pregnancy and the lineages of suffering so often spawned from them.
