To ensure every child 'wins', Washington athletic association removes ball from soccer

In Olympia, Washington, they're playing a new kind of youth soccer. To address the negative effects of competition, soccer is now being played without a ball. They're calling it 'ball-less soccer.' (An idea that was first launched in Ontario.)

"Here in Olympia we've been looking at how competition impacts youth and it's usually kind of negative, especially if you're on the losing team," said Helen Coyle, head of the Olympia Youth Sports League.

"So last year," she said, "we took away the notion of scoring, which meant there were no winners and there were no losers. But in many ways we felt that it just didn't go far enough. So we've actually taken away the ball."

Keith Shultz is a ball-less soccer coach. It is his job to keep track of where the imaginary ball is.

"Coaching ball-less soccer is very difficult from my perspective because I have to do a lot of imagining," he said.

"Any coach can coach a kid on soccer skills and having fun out there but the real challenge of my job as a coach in ball-less soccer is trying to keep track of where the ball is and coach the kids on how do you keep track of the ball and where is the ball."

If this program is successful, Olympia is considering removing the ball from some basketball leagues as well.

no, it's real. I've a niece who plays soccer and had a match down there couple weeks ago. i don't watch sports and only went one other match, it was still super confused. apparently its not ubiquitous, some places participate and some don't. apparently all on the south end though because my sister hadn't seen a match yet liek if and went off on the ref about how retarded it was. my niece's coach was dumbfounded along with most of her team. the opposing team was having a great time though. apparently it's what they do. Only half of them had complete uniforms too lol. i guess their roster includes a lot more than those who were there. its liek a "show if you wanna have fun!" system. no try-outs, can even get added part way into the season if you wanna play.

Whether this is real or not, I honestly I don't see anything wrong with a bunch of kids getting together for some non-competitive exercise and fun ... although personally I find it difficult to understand how a bunch of kids can have fun without some form of competition. Even so, I can still believe it, because kids are weird.

My cousin had a Star Wars-themed birthday party for his seven-year old last week, and one of the activities was just laying out a bunch of towels and such out in the back yard and then having the kids cross "hot lava" (without becoming Anakin). I kid you not, for twenty minutes a giant mass of 6-7 year-olds stood quietly/patiently on their respective towels, waiting for minutes at a time until the kid ahead of them jumped one towel ahead, so that they could do the same and then go back to waiting for a few minutes on a new towel.

Amazingly (to me at least) no one cried or complained, and honestly they all loved it. Again, kids are weird :confused:

i was the bully in school but after about 2 years bullying a kid i'd start showing him affection and he'd become an intimate, confiding friend. these relationships have persisted for life :o i never once scored a goal in elementary school soccer and i turned out perfectly well-adjusted.

oh i was a clumsy twink & underweight, it was more like verbal & psychological harassment. and organizing ostracism. I handled plenty kids bigger than me (White school, not a lot of violence. It sounds like you are from a much rawer background, maybe DC public schooling? different game out there).

one of them did physically dom me once & applied me a little bit of black eye after a long time taking bullying and it set me straight as far as he was concerned :o but no1 else ever cleared the psychological hurdles. Not sure we're of the same club although I'd be flattered if we were!

ya i come from the godless northeast. no bible thumping or any overtones of 1960's enlightenment here. that stuff one or the other played a big part in parenting. you either carried over some woke or you didn't. parents that were struggling took it out on their kids, regular beatings etc. I remember in 6th-7th grade this kid exposing me to stories of how he was fighting his father etc. (he was held back multiple times, so he was like age 14 and really mature from DNA activation from stress response, voice change physical body, shaving etc in 6th grade) I couldn't imagine anything like that. Just the story of his predicament was traumatic and the physical changes of his body made him a complete fucking freak to me. His body was literally prematurely aging as a response to his predicament. He was misshapen.

then in high school I started realizing its not just 1 kid, its like every other kid. constant fights over god knows what. each day someone would have a story about how they "threw down" on the old man and broke the drywall out in a skirmish. they also all referred to their fathers by first name so it was confusing to figure out what they were talking about at first. I was a quick study tho and seen how to "win the game" by becoming king of the assholes. I fought many other football players over the smallest of things. basically became a gangster and intensely enforced respect. I even beat up my childhood best friend because he wasn't respecting my right to laugh at his -2/10 girlfriend with my posse to his face. then I tried to peace it up with him, not to befriend him, but to bring closure to it. he rejected it and said "not really" so I beat ass again for senior year and the entire school noticed how I was really decking this kid in the hallway on a bi-weekly basis. was p good keks.
