finally cutting soda for good. been weaning myself off for the past few weeks and it's time to just take the plunge. was up to half a dozen cans a day at my highest. past few weeks been 1-2 cans a day. today was the first full day with nothing. probably going to suck worse in the coming days.
my life's miserable and being overweight doesn't help. part of me counted on being dead by now and it hasn't happened, so why not go for something extreme anyways. once I'm okay with just water, gonna limit myself to just nothing but baked whole potatoes for two weeks a la Penn jillette. probably a terrible idea but we'll see. here's to weight loss... gains(?)
We gotchu here man! Gainz is a pretty positive place. This thread is for the most part, the safest place to be on these forums haha. Start little man, the unhealthier and bigger you are the easier it's gonna be for you to lose weight right out the gate.. Cut little things like soda out, and take in some H20 and watch pounds drop, then choose something else to cut out. Always start with your diet, then get into some physical activities! But you working towards soda will be enough to take one at once, so don't overdue it! We gotchu bud!! You made me smile this morning with making some changes!
4th night in a row. One more to go and then I'm off for 5. Pretty excited to go ham for 5 days straight.
Sustaining my weight and getting a little "rest" period while I work. Even though it's long hours, I'm not destroying my body in the gym. I'm up to 156.6, with a goal of 160 for now. I guess I'll work on 170 next. I'm sustaining weight as eating becomes easier.
I obtained a right wrist injury a couple of weeks ago. I started taping it and laying off some of the few exercises that tweak it. It's definitely feeling a lot better. The leg is still acting up, and in some cases worse than before. I'm trying to be patient with it. We'll have to see how that plays out.
Aside from the minor injuries, gains are coming along nicely. I'm the strongest I've ever been. Labs and vitals are good. Things are going well.

Mornin my man. Does the whole leg injury affect your leg days pretty hard? Have you had to adjust workouts at all to keep the bottom half of your body from lagging behind the top half? With you not being able to go as HAM on leg days?

Hey bud. Only leg extensions, leg press, and squats. I push through most of the pain. But the answer is yes. I can't go as hard as I would like to on those exercises. Most calves, glutes, or hamstring workouts are fine. I can bike without any issues as well.

Leg extensions, leg press, and squats are the most painful is what I meant. Sorry, that was a little confusing. I shouldn't even be up right now.
Yea, glutes are great. Don't ever feel embarrassed doing any muscle groups, especially ones guys shy away from because they believe it's a female workout. Self-confidence and assertiveness are more attractive than trying to be the cool guy. And caring about others negativity will inhibit your progress.

Amen brotha! Leg extensions i definitely steer clear of. Most leg exercises are definitely the riskiest when working out, haha probably why i like the glutes these days, injury seems quite minimal..

Everyone knows there is no such thing as a gay workout.
And everyone should also know if there was, it would be that weighted glute bridge -- but there isn't. So we should all be nice and secure.
Edit: I hear straight women actually like guys with butts. And its obviously worth working out the glutes from a athletic standpoint as well. So lots of guys do it now.

I'm guessing you were joking, but there is a real stigma associated with certain exercises. They do more than just make you look appealing. A lot of the exercises that females tend to do more help with stability and support of your lower extremity, along with your core.

Haha I do glute bridges at home because I don’t want to look like a queer @ the gym
One way I’ve successfully stayed monogamous is by mentally taking account of the number of times attractive blonde and Hispanic women give me the wry smile that is universal parlance for “you could get it.” It’s a confidence boost in middle age. I can’t be certain, but I think doing glute bridges would decrease those smiles

watch the B6 kid. American supplements have no limit and EU does.
Its neurotoxic longterm when taken at a sustained dose every day for around 1.5 to 2 years (this is the average length it takes to manifest symptoms of B6 toxicity). a few MG shouldn't be a problem but some people dont excrete B6. I just take Zinc and Magnesium separately.
B6 is supposed to be a trace vitamin. Try to keep it that way.
I could link you studies on B6 in animals that would shake your tree kid. You have no idea.

I hear that not running or jogging actually lowers your bone density. At the same time it is possible to over do it. The line depends on the person / specific types of runs. Some might be good at 2 runs a week and others might be fine with 6 days a week until they're 90 years old.
Weighed in at 159.5. Half a pound from my goal and 34 pounds heavier than after I broke my leg. I'm the strongest I've ever been and feel great. Once I see 160 I'll try for 170.

Just 2 weeks back into the Big3 and I already look and feel bigger. On the other hand, I forgot how much I don't enjoy stuffing my face constantly. Eating every 2-3 hours and feeling ravenous gets old (so many damn dishes!)
Finally got a 1 plate OHP. I've had some shoulder injuries before so I took it super slow and the baby 35 plates for a long time. It was so easy, I probably could have done it months ago. But again, you tear that labrum or rotator cuff and your fugged.

Sounds like you've done some nerve damage. Be careful man. Do an ice bucket. Leave your foot in there 20 minutes at a time. Elevate it during breaks. This helped mine a lot.

Skateboarder since the 90's here! Rolling ankles was a common occurrence. I rolled it for the last time about 2 years ago.. That was the end for me, that was a rolling that never healed back up right.. If i attempt to kickflip now, my ankle is super stiff. If i ignore the stiffness, and flick it like i normally would, it creates this strange little darting pain in a specific spot, and then it itches instantly after.. That's my ankle story...
Fucking around I put up 275 flat bench yesterday after a bunch of sets. That's a PR for me. 300 has always been my life goal. Looks like I'm going to be able to destroy that soon. My biggest issue is a spotter since I workout alone. I might have to start working out with my brother so he can spot me.

I jumped off a ledge at a local waterfall, about 10 ft drop, right after my birthday last year and my body reminded me I’m over 30 when I landed square on my right heel. Didn’t have health insurance, so I have no idea whether I fractured anything. Limped for a few weeks. Perfectly fine most of the time but still aches when I get really active. I want to do AT / PCT and hope this doesn’t stop me.

My man! Well done! You basically benched 2 bigjeff100's. Grats! I'm in the same boat, i work out alone.. G.F ditched me in the gym game a while back! But I've always wanted to check my max reps for things like a squat or a press.. Darn all of you for living in florida!

I have been making slow and steady progress. Not bulking hard because I need to keep a trim body to seal a new relationship with a Patriam approved woman (thanks p99dad, hope you're doing well). Kendo is very good for me. Taking an econ class in addition 50 hr workweek, kendo, gym, I'll have to cut back after this semester to make relationship time.
I check the forums every few days during particularly long shits and am always glad to see ppl doing their GAINS.
PS I'm training my brother again.
OK. Pray for me. Cya in a month or two
Always good to hear from ya Skarlorn! Glad to hear gains are being made outside the gym over there! Congrats on the new lady friend!! Go get'her tiger!

I like to call a bro over to help me lift way more than my max. After they struggle to help me get it up I jump off the bench and go yeah bitch! new record. then I go to give them 5 and just before their hand reaches mine I pull it away and stroke my hair and go too slow. After that I go to the bathroom and smoke a victory cigarette.
When people ask me to spot them I pretend like i'm helping them pull it up even when they don't ask for it yet, but really im pushing down on it. I make sure it gets back down to their chest, and call over some cute chicks to help us try to pull it off the poor sap. After me and the hot chicks get it off him I go to give them 5, but I pull my hand back right before they hit it and grab my dick and go honk honk. That normally gets me laid.

Not impressed with lack of progress pics on this forum :( I like seeing the result of will power and dedication.
I've recently decided to try and gain some LBs. Always been an issue for me since I've been lean a high-cardio exerciser for some time.
Anyone done P90X before? Its my go-to regime and works great for aesthetics, but now im looking to deviate from that for fear of muscle plateau. Looking for a new routine, any suggestions?
I don't like machines TBH - always prefer body weight (i know i know, how to gain mass if no big weights. . . idk does it exist?)
Pref 45m-1h15m routines with reasonable breaks (1m-1:30s)
Must maintain aesthetic focus. I hate bulk, but I dig muscle definition.

I like 5/3/1 by Jim Wendler (https://www.t-nation.com/workouts/531-how-to-build-pure-strength) for gaining strength on core lifts like bench, deadlift, squats. I've been doing this shortly before Crossfit WoDs. Basically you never plateau doing this from what I can tell. Progress is slow and steady.

Yeah i want this to be be like weekly or twice week +muscle training days. I like endurance.
I was really relaxed after today. I could have probably run 5 miles straight. But i am forcing myself to ramp up slowly. It was so nice to be able to really enjoy it today.

Haha yea sorry, I just call them leggings. But yeah compression clothing is what i meant! I have a compression shirt but i don't wear it often. I religiously sport my compression undies, and compression pants tho!
That thigh rub sounds like a nightmare brotha. I can almost guarantee they would! Just make sure you get a material that will help with that. I have a few different types and 1 or 2 would promote rubbing, but a few are thinner and smoother, and I can see them definitely helping! Just a heads up- Gettin outta them thangs after a sweaty workout will make you want to punch a hole in the wall.

What were the effects of overtraining that you felt?
Overtraining is sometimes used to talk about serious medical cases of overwork that require mild hospitalization, time off etc.
But a lot of times I call it "Overtraining" if I didn't recover enough before trying to exercise again -- thereby getting diminished results.
I think others tend to use it this way too.

Yeah man, your forearms look the same size as your upper arms.. 1 thing i've noticed as a hard gainer- Is there a relation between big hands/forearms and big muscles? I feel like those folks blessed with generous lower arm size kill the gym game.. I often feel limited by my lower arms.. Wrists/forearms/hands.. But can't do much to increase strength there..

A better grip will help you pull more weight. It's one of my biggest challenges, but I've worked at my forearms for a while now, and they're getting stronger because of the weight I'm pulling as well.
I started to use hand chalk which has helped me immensely. I also have straps for when I'm really pulling some shit I can barely hold onto.
I would have little bitch arms if I didn't work on them. Work on your forearms bro. They will grow. I'm living proof.

I have been starting that! Over the last month since i've kinda pinned some of my issues on my lower arms/hands. I've removed the gloves from my workouts, And I only use my straps for similar situations- Deadlifts, and trap workouts especially. Guess we'll start there?

There's been a rise in anxiety baking (https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/12/baking-anxiety-millennials/578404/)
Last winter, a recipe for salted chocolate-chunk shortbread cookies spread through my social circle like a carbohydrate epidemic. One of my friends kept seeing the cookies pop up on Instagram and, relenting to digital peer pressure, eventually made them. She brought half the batch to a dinner party, and then it was off to the races. For months, it felt as if every time I showed up to a party, someone else was pulling a Tupperware container out of a tote bag, full of what was eventually known among us as just The Cookies.
Just remember,
Baking might be mentally healthy -- but it produces a lot of unhealthy food you shouldn't eat. If you can figure out how to make ancient style bread -- I'd give it the thumbs up.
Otherwise, there's nothing like fresh homemade sourdough all the time to put on the pounds.

I'm from Seattle. We don't follow those old people rules here. It's winter, i'm by the ocean, and i'm bald... Why would i choose to wear a sweatshirt and pants to cover all exposed body parts, but leave my head naked for heat to escape? Sounds counter productive to me. The best for carb loading (which is good for things like sprinting, spartan running, and meta cons) is Sweet Potatos, Brown Rice, and Qinoa IMO. Bread is never ideal. Stuff like Corn, white rice and potateos aren't that bad...but they aren't that great either its pretty easy to overdo it.
If you just do vegitables all the time keto style -- I think the body does adjust eventually...but the glycogen might be a little slower to restore at first i'm guessing. Most vegetables are not considered "complex carbs" which are bad when overdone but ideal for this specific thing.
They are also cheap and fill you up if you are food insecure.
Edit: this is a response to something on PS thread.

I bonded with my large neighbor over rice today. He's been giving me eyes for weeks now. Today, I was going into the front door with rice over my shoulder. The neighbor, smoking, goes "RICE, huh?" from about 30 feet away. I turned and said "No, RICE." He said "that's what I said." very matter of factly and I replied "Oh, I thought you said 'ICE'." Having displayed vulnerability thru fallibility, I seemed to have boosted the man's comfort level with me significantly, and we had a few more exchanges with him in a position of superiority before he dismissed me. I said "you have a good day too" very cutely because I was turned on by the 30 second interlude. Is that normal?
You'll grow out of it. It's annoying. After a fact. Unless the other person is more attractive.

After my medication ran out and sent me into chemical menopause, I gained about 25lbs from October to halfway through December, 190-215. Since I got back on them mid-Dec, I’m back down to 203 and feeling human shaped again. Feeling better about appearance is making me want to push harder — I’ve been walking a ton this week, think at least 20 miles over three days, trying to do rough calorie counts for what I eat (1500-2000 target), and really trying to cut out liquid calories.
Back on HRT now for.. roughly the next year or so. I’m not going to run out as long as I keep this insurance and that’s a hugeee weight off my mind. Got computer testing supporting my adhd diagnosis and been on Adderall for the past few days.. I think it’s helping me be immensely more productive. Feels like a deal with the devil, but for now, things in 2019 are going extremely well!

Author information (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15369278#)
Abstract
Ammonia is an irritant gas with a characteristic pungent odor, which is widely used in industry. Inasmuch as ammonia is highly soluble in water and, upon inhalation, is deposited in the upper airways, occupational exposures to ammonia have commonly been associated with sinusitis, upper airway irritation, and eye irritation. Acute exposures to high levels of ammonia have also been associated with diseases of the lower airways and interstitial lung. In this study, the authors report on a patient with long-term, repetitive occupational exposure to ammonia at levels at or above odor recognition who developed interstitial lung disease. The scientific literature on inhaled ammonia exposure is reviewed and discussed. The authors conclude that the taking of a careful occupational exposure history for patients presenting with shortness of breath associated with ammonia exposure may assist with an early diagnosis, thus allowing for treatment early in the disease process and prevention of further exposure.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15369278

While I wouldn't do it myself, the study is for long term exposure to high concentrations of ammonia gas. There is no evidence to suggest that using the low levels of ammonia during training causes any adverse long term health effects. But there's always a risk for irritation for any substance foreign to the lungs.

I've smelled them before. They're often used on patients in an attempt to bring them back to consciousness. It smells like ammonia. Really terrible. I've never had a problem with motivation and concentration for a lift, so I wouldn't bother putting myself through that. But try it out if you want.

How many g protein/day you doing on keto?
Remeber that 30% of protein calories are consumed in processing so while they calculate 5 lcal/g proteins its truly only 3.5kcal/g. This is why they say to keto at x grams where x = 80% of your bodyweight in pounds. At a target weight of 185 to 190 that would be about 150g protein (18oz chicken breast) with about 1200kcal to spare. Fats ring in at 9kcal/gram and carbs 5kcal/gram, but youll want to focus on minimizing carbs aside from the innate carbs in your vegetables. I like to do a lot of zucchini and brocolli. Last night i did tacos with almond flour + egg +unsweetened almond milk whipped up to a batter and fried to make crepe-like tortillas.

maybe give intermittent fasting a go while in keto. minimizing insulin should lower your metabolic target weight and if you are in keto, then you shouldn't see significant losses to lean body mass. You are potentially missing out on some of the anabolic effects of insulin, but you still realize them around your meal(s), which should occur following lifts anyway. Also, intermittent fasting stimulates autophagy, which offers the added bonus of cleaning up unnecessary/harmful tissues like plaques. Google all this stuff, could be complete bullshit, but all seems plausible.
Cecily
01-25-2019, 10:04 AM
I want to start up intermittent fasting again. I had it going for about 2 weeks last year and then I ate outside window once and could never get back into it. Worked really well for me because it was easy to spread my target calories over two moderately sized meals than spread over the whole day.
Right now I’m just eating less without tracking it and it’s working ok. ~2.8/week
Since December, 213 to 199 today. 39 to go.

very cool. I've been at it for a while now and I've found it is actually a lot easier for me in keto because I just don't get hungry and when I do it, I don't get hit with a post-meal fog. I take calories once a day around 1:00 and then just water/coffee/tea (no sweetener/malk/etc) the rest of the time. I was surprised by the amount of visceral fat I've lost.

I can appreciate the goals and the general idea of healthy habits & practices....but some seem to be treating or talking about their eating and exercise lifestyles to an exact science like it's some kinda engineering project?
IDK this just bores the heck out of me personally....is boredom or tedium really worth the extra "gains"?
Besides feeling "better" and looking "hot", are we trying to sex up robots eventually? This sounds like robot talk to me!:confused::(
Are we preparing for life, dating, & sex with robots? Can't we wait 100 years more for this? :p
are you trying to get that jacked? he looks dumb dude. He went too far
Not at all. And I doubt I ever will because I don't take anabolic steroids. So unless I really leaned out, which isn't going to happen, I won't ever look like that. I like my very natural look when I'm not pumped up.
He does a lot of good stuff and is a genuinely nice dude, so he gets cut some slack for looking like a freak. But it's hard to do what he does and not.
