Is turning our diets or daily exercise routines into a strict computer algorithm or scientific formula for "peak efficiency" really going to accomplish something wonderful? I can appreciate the goals and the general idea of healthy habits & practices....but some seem to be treating or talking about their eating and exercise lifestyles to an exact science like it's some kinda engineering project?
IDK this just bores the heck out of me personally....is boredom or tedium really worth the extra "gains"?
Besides feeling "better" and looking "hot", are we trying to sex up robots eventually? This sounds like robot talk to me!:confused::(
Are we preparing for life, dating, & sex with robots? Can't we wait 100 years more for this? :p
You're missing the point. But if you want to "do whatever you want" it's kinda hard to be a total bitch when sugar daddy upgrades to the cybernetic model.

maybe give intermittent fasting a go while in keto. minimizing insulin should lower your metabolic target weight and if you are in keto, then you shouldn't see significant losses to lean body mass. You are potentially missing out on some of the anabolic effects of insulin, but you still realize them around your meal(s), which should occur following lifts anyway. Also, intermittent fasting stimulates autophagy, which offers the added bonus of cleaning up unnecessary/harmful tissues like plaques. Google all this stuff, could be complete bullshit, but all seems plausible.
Jives with my extremely supernatural wisdom score. You are a genius.

I get what you’re saying, Asteria, but I’m hoping to use what science is out there to get to my goal as quickly as possible. I like science anyways. Right now I’m testing the hypothesis that my swarthy girth is why people see me as guy in public. It’s one of the few variables I’m able to change at this point.

speaking of not pooping, did you know that there are mites that live on most people's faces that eat our oil, but can't poop because they don't have a butthole and so when they die, they rot in our pores filling them with all the poop a mite has amassed in its tummy over the course of its life?

I was concerned that a hyper-focus on this technical stuff might take up a lot of time for other things or take some enjoyment out of eating. Maybe I was just being a presumptuous witch?? :o:(

I do this already, but thanks for the info! For whatever reason, I gain super slow while in ketosis. I added some carbs back to my diet the past 6 months, and, before going nuts on pecan pie and Mac n cheese post thanksgiving, I wasn’t really putting on fat but was bulking up BIGLY. I’m just worried about losing the sick GAINZ made across my pectoral girdle. Also, WTB biceps. I can bench 325 now but I can’t curl shit

6.17 miles in 72 minutes with a 1 mile cool down. Avg pace trail running back woods 11.60min/mile.
Trail was really tight and interesting through bush. Lots and lots of boar.
Also a lot of easy squats and lunges during cool down. Really really nice core strength developing.

(100 cal / mil * 30 * 12) / 3500 = about -10 lbs a year per mile you average every day.
4 miles daily = 400 cal and about 60-75 walking mins per day.
= ~145,000 = -41 lbs without touching diet.
I wanna do this. When I was doing 5 per day I did injure myself.. hmm. 2 & -200

dieting is the best way to lose weight though, because if you aren't modifying what you eat and getting into those habits, hopefully permanently, you will just put the weight back on. You're much more likely to consistently eat a healthy diet as opposed to continuing a certain exercise schedule (at least that's my opinion)
PS: Tried a full body workout today. Did some random ass stuff. I did 7 sets of decline. 135 10x, 185 10x, 205 10x, 225 8x, 245 6x, 265 3x, 285 1x

This is pretty much the advice I give to everyone. You have to make it a lifestyle, otherwise the weight is just going to come right back.

Keep up the good work old man. You should invest in a dip belt if you don't have one already. That will really help bring some shape to the pecs and strength to your bench workouts.

I suck at dips. I almost feel them entirely on my chest and relatively little on my triceps. But you’re right. Any brand you suggest?

This is the one I bought. I'm able to put 4x45lbs plates on it. You just have to make sure the smooth end of the clip is against your leg otherwise the clip can dig in. I know because it happened to me with 3 plates on lol. I'm lucky it didn't cut into my leg anymore than it did.

This app is pretty cool. This is Model my diet for women. There’s also a men’s version. Playing with the settings: 6’, hourglass, small bust, -1 body adjust gave me this result which almost matches my body atm. T/A off a little bit, but rest is dead on.
I had thought 160 sounded too skinny. The app sorta confirmed that. 170, though, looks like a great goal weight

Sorry I've been really busy with work. To answer your question about bench, I really don't know. I don't lift with anyone or usually bother to use a spotter except for when I'm really tired, I'll ask someone to just keep an eye on me. Bench is probably around low 300s if I maxed out. I do a lot of dumbells, so if I get tired I can just drop them. I've always had really strong triceps and a strong decline bench, which allows me to put up huge dip numbers.
I never started doing deadlifts and my brother stopped doing them due to injury. It's just too tough on the lower back. I also don't fuck around with squats. I strictly stick to leg press, but I do them with impeccable range of motion so that I get the most out of them. None of this stacking 10 plates on each side, bring it down 4 inches and then come back up. I go all the way down and all the way up, and if I can't, I drop the weight down.

No gains this weekend. I’m out at the ranch drinking with the Czechs. Bought a new bull a while ago. His name is Law man. He won’t bang the heffers. Money well spent I guess. We’ve been drinking steadily all day and repairing the wire around the perimeter. Another one of the bulls busted out and went to a neighboring property. Had a cigarette for the first time in decades. Good chilling out here with my boys, but damn getting older sucks. My hangover lasted half the day. About to play poker with the sheriff and some of the other locals, all of whom are whiter than SC. Another year in and time only seems to pick up pace. I will DING 54 on February 4th. RL Druid

I feel like if my muscles are hurting and stiff like 3 days later I did a crazy workout. Too much. But it never feels like it will be this bad later. Ive done all the recovery things. I know none of this feels permanent. Maybe it was wasted effort though if I regularly don't run barefoot. Which I probably won't get into.

I used to think I had some kind of back issues until I took up lifting a few years ago. Now im mostly focused on doing obstacle course races so I just do obstacles, but my bad back was just a weak back that was so weak from underuse that id be sore after any movement. Working hard turned my life around, and now being able to do infinite pull ups or pushups, and picking heavy stuff up off the ground, I'm a more useful person.

hello elves
been about a year since making GAINS thread. i am proud of all elves and their GAINS quests. the best time to make GAINS is now, what are you waiting for?
since starting this thread I GAINED 40 lb lean muscle and am doing well with my choice of martial arts. I GAINED much personally and professionally, and attribute much of my success to improved cognition and mental discipline that is a result of core physical discipline. I GAINED a nice, white woman as my girl friend and she will become my wife. Muscles help. nice Penis helps. Growing fattness of the salary helps and I owe these things to dedication of GAINs. We are nothing without GAINS.
I have also GAINED my way out of obsessive behavioral patterns like daily cannabis use, forumquesting, and the need to play video games.
Hypnotherapy was a crucial component as the third layer of GAINs strategy.
I encourage you. I believe in you. Set a goal. and GAIN it.

I think I may be in ketosis myself, inadvertently, by cutting my carb intake way back. Down 13 lbs since Jan 10th, and at least 4 of that has been this week. I’m back to my old plateau of 193 in October, and I’m so happy to be back to it. 5 or so lbs more and my belly is gonna be really flat. Weather warming up again. Really looking forward to getting back to trekking around my town and hiking.

Good call on water. Thank you. I’ve never done keto, so I dunno how fast it goes. It spares muscle really well compared to traditional diet and endurance exercise which burn a percentage of muscle along with fat. Keto might actually be 100% muscle retention.
I figure next year I’ll be ready to start putting on weight and muscle where I want it, but it’s still awhile off.

I typically lose weight by running at a calorie deficit, relying on hiit to ramp up my metabolism. And eating vegetables. Longer endurance training helps to build overall lean body mass and increase the bodies ability to store, use, and replenish glycogen. Lean body mass also subtly increases metabolism, but not as much as hiit and good nutrition. Periods of ketosis help keep the liver healthy. Proper balanced hydration (which includes minerals, best source veggies) and moderation helps with the kidneys and avoiding excess protein in the blood stream. Battery acid fruit drinks and sodas do not count towards hydration.
My doctor is extremely impressed with my lab and physical results. I wanted to offer my body up to him for dissection at the cellular level while still living. I think he'd enjoy that immensely.
Do not eat toxic crap grown in toxic soil fed to sick and distressed animals and and bleached and filled with detergents to make it easier to process in machines. Filled of sweeteners in order to sell to the zombies.
Bigerson's Turducken™ is a real thing.
I eat a pretty reasonable amount of lower glycemic carbs still. In smaller servings. Like 200-400 per meal. If I want more I wait an hour or two.
I always regret 1000 kcal meals. Because they make me feel sick. As hell.

One of my engineers who has worked for us for 14 years has been performing poorly. Wife diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago and the fight has been tough and the prognosis poor. He’s struggled at work. Looks ragged, underperforming, for a while now. I’m in management now and so I’m supposed to fire this guy, but I haven’t. I got told to fire him. I refused and resigned. Don’t give a shit. I have savings and don’t need to work. Fuck that. I had murder on my mind. I exaggerate, but balding dickhead was asking for my fist

Yep, that’s my thoughts on millennials. Y’all have such a defeatist attitude. This dude is telling me how easy my life was. Yes, learning English and digging trenches for PVC pipe in Nacogdoches heat at age 11 was great. Certainly no one was racist towards us. Everything was handed to my family. I especially enjoyed my uncle dying and having an assault rifle handed to me at 7 and my dad telling me to use it on any Arabs coming for my mother or sister, and to listen to my grandfather and the local imam
JD, you need to work on how you perceive things. My life has been easy because I embrace the struggle instead of whining about it. Nut up pussy

Speaking of which, I bought a pack of cigarettes the other day and they were fantastic. 1-2 a day stopped all my concentration / impulse problems. I could get work done again. I smoked about 7 or 9 then I lost the pack and I’ve been trying to keep myself from buying more the past 4 nights. Very unpleasant withdrawal. It’s not as strong as it was when I was quitting from an active addiction, but it’s constant at night. This craving has been droning in my head for 3 hours.
Something tells me I’m really close to CoPD and if I cave I’m getting emphysema.

I was weighing voluntarily reaquiring a nicotine addiction for the performance benefits. I think it’s a bad idea. I smoked for 20 years and until recently I was 6 months clean. I get horrible mood swings when my nicotine levels drop and that’s mostly why I wanted to quit, so that I’m not an (more) awful person to the people around me.
Good to remember that. Not worth it. I should be in the clear in a few days.

Nicotine boosts concentration, working memory, and reduces impulsivity... it’s how I treated my ADHD & depression. Wanna know something neat? I bet they pull massive weights in Valhalla.. See you all at the local gym there!! Been holdin steady in mid 150's these days.. Goal has always been to hit 160, work on leaning out, and staying around that weight.
I've managed to relax on my diet to make the gains needed. And i'm finally comfortable with my calorie intake. I'm lifting heavier, less reps (except i still go higher reps on isolation stuff).
Oh, Post script- I brought up ammonia, or smelling salts a few pages back, well, I bought a little container of it.. First off, hot damn that stuff will make your nose burn and eyes water! I attempted smelling them twice.. Once was for a heavy squat, and the other was for a heavy deadlift.. And without a doubt, it works.. Anyways. just thought i'd report my findings.

explain about the ammonia more?
sick bicep but dude why are you bald?
Haha beats me.. Went bald in my 20's, shaved all that stuff!! I have no problem admitting defeat.
Anyways, the ammonia thing- Not something i will do regularly, only when I want to push myself on a certain lift, which would only be for a compound movement.. So maybe 1 sniff, once a week or so..
Anyways the science behind it is that ammonia arouses your consciousness. The gas, irritates the membranes of your nose and lungs and triggers an inhalation reflex. The reflex alters your breathing pattern, resulting in increased oxygen intake, alertness, and the fact that this stuff is used in the medical field to keep folks from passing out, or to wake them up after.

Haha i always find it strange how everybodies veins differ.... Even my 2 arms are different. My left arm is my favorite cause it has a 1 big vein that travels down the top of my bicep, it's a beautiful thing.. Right arm just has that one, and it doesn't really ever fill up or pop, it just sits there.
Kind words Jimmyjam! Appreciate it bud!

Wrist size predicts bicep size. Some can't get huge biceps. I know professional bodybuilders like smaller wrists to create the illusion of bigger biceps -- but they grow their mussels way bigger than normal in the fitness world.

This isn't true at all. My wrists are tiny and I have nice size biceps. They'll grow just like any other muscle. You just have to work them right.
What about biceps?
Stretch well on arm day.
Do arms in one day (tris and bis) and do them before back day. Back uses a lot of bicep, so I would do that after to focus energy on your bis. I would do chest before arms (tris) if you're looking to grow your chest.
Start off with heavy weight, low rep dumbbell curls on the arm curl bench. 5-6 reps is fine. Keep increasing until you can only do 1 rep. Cheat a little with the other arm if you need to help yourself pull up the weight to get that last rep. Increase weight every 1-2 weeks.
Do barbell curls, hammers, and concentrated to finish.
On back day do heavy reverse grip barbell row and seated row.
Eat. You need to eat to grow.

Saving your post. I had been doing chest, back, arm day in that order, followed by legs. I’ll do yours instead
Two bodybuilding principles for any muscle also apply to biceps: 1) training through the extremities of the movement (fully lengthened position to the fully shortened position) and 2) maintaining tension on the desired muscle. Easy way to help maintain tension is using the preacher curl bench. Standing with a 90 lb ez curl bar swinging your hips to get the weight up will do nothing to grow biceps.

300mg caffiene bomb and tl;dr: stimulants. I get soo irritiable if I drink 2 in day. Yeah that’s a healthier poison vs. the rockstars I generally drink. Always wondered what damage they do physiologically over time. Certainly more addictive than coffee. I’m gonna switch to bangs now that I think of it, because they’re worth the extra 50 cents for no sugar and actually taste good through some black magic.
I got to the point when I was consuming 4 x 260cal 64g sugar rockstars a day just to get through the day. Weight skyrocketed to my high score and thank god I saw a family picture of my gut. I was not cognizant of the girth of that belly until I saw it from other people’s perspective. Still freaks me out and still motivates me to drop pounds, 217 to 194 where I’ve been hovering awhile. It’s good weight. Bad BMI is all.

Bangs are almost certainly horrible for cardiac health. You’re right thoufh. They taste good. Also, I drink them for the gym. Halfway through my first set I picture the Arabs from atop my armored horse, and I charge in for another rep. That’s how dad did it.

My pre work out is a Marlboro and 12oz of black coffee
Saludeen
02-26-2019, 05:42 AM
Only preworkout is himalayan pink salt and water to help the electrical connections and blood pressure. Along with good sleep, energy from the sun and putting my bare feet on the ground. Don't need caffeine or nothing else. And motivated by the fact that I enjoy it, feel strong and naturally want to be strong and healthy from the deepest parts of my heart and because that's what a real man and servant of God would be.
Post workout is grass fed beef, raw milk cheese, cayanne pepper, 100% fruit juice, home made organic saurkraut. Then some pastured raw eggs the next day blended with organic spinach cause its easy to drink, bananas, peanut butter, brazil nuts cause they got tons of selenium, and any other REAL food I feel like eating. No junk food.
Rest between sets minimal as possible cause you produce more HGH with more intensity or supersets. Doing a full body workout with 2-3 days rest although I havn't been going as often as I should cause I have a bad habit of staying up late sometimes. Do heavy as possible for strength, then medium to light until failure for size while holding on the way down for time under tension and trying to burst on the way up to activate fast twitch, full range of motion and all free weights or cables. I do whatever weight feels right. Also do shadow boxing with and without weights to make that motion stronger and build muscle memory for if I have to use it. Better than nothing.

Jesus, how did you all manage to set aside the stimulants? I can't fathom ending my long day of work, surviving an hour bus ride commute home, and then walking into that gym powered by just passion and love for lifting weights.. I used to enjoy a cup of coffee on the bus ride home to keep me upright, but it upsets my tummy now...
That being said- Let me just have my stimulant haha. I'm healthy in every other department i promise!!!!!
Doesn’t that stuff give you a woody? I’m confused
It's a vasodilator. It's supposed to help blood blow. It doesn't give you instant erections, but can help with blood flow in that area.

It's a vasodilator. It's supposed to help blood blow. It doesn't give you instant erections, but can help with blood flow in that area.

Todays the day gainers.... Arnold Strongman Classic!!! Anybody tuning in??? Been real hyped on strongman this year. Watching everybodies training videos over the last month or 2... I always root for Brian Shaw or Eddie Hall.. But Eddie retired, Brian is my go to guy to root for. But since i've been watching Larry Wheels train strongman, i've grown to liking Hafthor and i think he's got a damn good chance to win it all. Anyways, any other thoughts???
In the spirit of strongman, get out and left somethin heavy today!!!

I'm on this weekend so I haven't had a chance to watch much. Cailer Woolam is definitely my favorite deadlifter. He's deceivingly strong, and gives a lot of great tips in his videos. I would check him out for anyone interested in increasing strength and technique on deadlifts.
I was staying away from deadlifts, but I felt like it was inhibiting my progress. Having a solid belt helps. I picked this up. No pain at all going pretty hard.

Agreed, lifting isn't terrible for your joints at all, as long as you build up the joint supporting muscles and do it the right way. Going in cold, or trying to "max out" without doing the correct amount of prep work in advance is when injuries happen. I have PRs of 440 on bench, 585 on deadlift, 415 on incline and 485 on squat (It's a little low because of scoliosis and 2 types of permanent nerve damage in my back from an accident). Not once have I ever had a joint issue related to lifting. Of course I don't plan on "maxing" without building up to it weeks in advance.

nope, we're all pretty much the same. the idea that genetic or even epigentic variance might affect growth or performance is a fairytale contrived to console losers who just don't want to put in the work.

I've a longknee cousin. Was super skinny, which didn't help and probably actually exacerbated the condition. Kids would call him Shinnee and he HATED it. By around 8th grade he'd had enough. He started watching ESP2N before school (kianna's flex appeal or some shit), eating BIG and lifting big. he looked about average, but kinda short his freshman year, but really bulked up by year 2 and then finally hit his growth spurt that summer. Came back to school stacked and werent nobody calling him Shinnee after that. He put in the work. He reaped the reward.

The answer is somewhat complicated. There are definitely advantages of having larger joints, especially in powerlifting. Stability during bench is one of them. But this is very extreme. There are also advantages of having smaller joints. As previously stated, they create an illusion of greater muscle mass. Many bodybuilders are successful for this reason. But for the average person it does not really matter. You can make any muscle group grow regardless of joint size and anabolic steroids. You just have to put in hard work exercises and eating.
Hope that makes sense. Sorry, going on hour 2 in the gym. Lacking oxygen to the brain.

You see, oxygen deprivation is when most of the joint damage occurs. It has to do with capillary gas exchange in the avascular tissue.

It's an overhead press but unlike the traditional or military overhead press, you're allowed you use your hips to launch the bar off your shoulders a bit.
Notice the dip in her hips before she presses it.

Warmup and stretch a bit.
Focus on tris, traps, and delts.
With cables do lower weight higher rep lateral raises, front raises, and rear delt flies. Chest flies with cables and bring them up higher.
Try to avoid shoulder pressing heavy weight and maybe not maxing out on bench for a couple of weeks.

"I'll be different this time"?
"I'll quit later when it's more easy"?

It's all bullshit addict rationalizing. Generally, professionals recommend reaching out to people you know for support and forming that habit, rather than reaching for the junk.

Yep, when in GAINZ mode, not maintain mode, there is an awful lot more flushing. That's the consequence of all the extra resources you have to eat for your bodies transformation.
I was reminded of how much has to be eaten as I met with my sister who is currently doing triathlons, half marathons and the like as her hobby.
2 bowls of porridge, eggs and a hot cross bun for her breakfast followed by a 2 hour run in the rain to the sea. Later she had a mountain of food on a large plate at the carvery!
It was most impressive!
Super proud for her too; after she came out of University she went into office roles which just kills your body. She saw what was happening and took the iniative to start the hobbies and take the time to do something about it. She's all over Europe competing in races now (yet to score any FTE yet as far as I'm aware).

188.6 this morning. Ding 180s, been awhile! Been dropping ever so slowly, it feels like, but in reality I’m down 18lbs this year. Pretty cool. Quit smoking yesterday, so I’m curious to see if a month long relapse gets the associated weight gain.
I didn’t really gain anything last time, but I had to fight, hard, to maintain it. Smoking wrecks your intestinal flora and there’s a ratio of bacteria associated with lean people and one associated with obese people. You get the skinny ratio when you smoke, but it flips to obese one when you quit, until, I assume, the microbiome balances out again.
What the fatty bacteria are thought to do is give you free calories for everything you eat, basically. They are more efficient at encouraging food absorption, so even if don’t increase your caloric intake... you gain weight when you quit. It’s pretty fucked up.

I saw this topic long ago but wanted to chime in now that the conversation is steering in a way I think I can chat about (and hock one of my hobbies to you guys). I'm not a success story, i'm just a story, and that's a lead in to my first point.
There is only the goals you have, the goals you succeed at, and the goals you didn't achieve, either because you decided it wasn't a goal anymore, or you're just not there yet. Some guys, or girls or anything in between, want to get absolutely jacked and huge. That's pretty hard to do. Some people want to bodybuild. I think i'm in a hefty majority who sort of decides its more of a "I want to look good naked" type thing.. which is a bonus for me given I sign up for a lot of silly naked races and a bike race events which are more common in my area.
Anyway, I started doing the basic strength thing. I notice a lot of folks doing that. I liked doing rippetoes Starting Strength and trying out Stronglifts. They are great starting lifting programs, but you sort of have to find your own way soon because they get heavy quick. I was also running, but that was boring, especially on roads. I eventually found trail running with a nice pair of trail running shoes is so entertaining and exploration made it more fun. I really got into fitness when I discovered obstacle course racing.. and that's mostly why I wanted to make the post (in case nobody knew it existed or was an option). It was a mix of how much I enjoyed jungle gym crap as a kid and seeing the contrast in how awesome the assassin's creed characters jump around on buildings and crap and yet I could barely hold onto a bar for a few seconds.
If you find that the typical lift/swim/run type thing is hard to stick to, try looking for an OCR gym near you. You can practice simple obstacles or attempt more ninja warrior type stunts.. like when I wanted to start being able to lache for the first time:

here's a few typical obstacles that most obstacle races have:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgBgJvpQVw0
I'm not super jacked but I do alright. I went from 230 lbs about 4 years ago to holding at around 188 (at 6ft even). Still feel like I could drop a bit more though. My abdomen looks like a mad science experiment that i'm recovering from
https://i.imgur.com/8bsgcAd.png
A few things I learned along the way, and it's going to sound super softcore :p
Weight loss is straight calories, even if you were pounding sugar all day. I feel like keto / low carb crap is very fadlike, and it sure works for a lot of people as a means, but I like a good balance, and not to plan to "revert" back to something that was supposedly "bad" (even though its not i.e. consuming carbohydrates). Just because you drop weight though isn't always ideal. Gotta keep that composition. I don't know nothin' bout eating 2 chickens a day, but chicken in general is nice to eat :D
A huge one for me, and maybe the thing I should have put at the top: CHILL OUT with doing something hard. Don't start with weight on the bar. Don't run every day. Just add in a nice 2 mile trot, maybe 2-3 times a week, and turn that trot mildly into a canter. Take it easy. Do everything gradually, and mentally tell yourself you'll do it forever not because you hate it, but because its not that bad. All my fellow OCR people always claim to hate running, but they are blasting out their 10 mile weekends and 5 mile weekdays anyway. Don't go 0-11 on anything, be it lifting, losing/gaining weight, getting your first pullup, or whatever. Just find a small level of success, and increase what you did gradually to be successful. Avoid "good" and "bad" binges. Binges do weird stuff to people.
Your goals are your goals too. I did want to talk about stuff I did but you can't push your goals on others or tell others their goal is wrong. I say this because on reddit fitness, there are so many people who are ashamed to admit their goals are "superficial" like straight aesthetics. Aesthetics are pretty good and common to focus on. Some people want pure strength. Power lifters can do amazing stuff in competitions.
I feel like obstacles are a great full body workout when mixed with running. I feel more human when I can pull myself over stuff, pick up heavy stuff, and move myself from A to B better. Probably because that's what people did for most of history :p

Thanks for posting a raw progress story.
I'm sorry if the thread wasn't as inviting for you in the beginning. I've always tried to
make this a safe place, with a focus on individual goals. That gets lost sometimes in between the trolling.
Making solid and consistent gains is what it's all about. Although I don't know what moderation and balance are, I definitely agree with you they're the best route for most.
Keep up the good work, dude.

okay i got around to reading cen's post and watching the videos. it's an excellent post. do things that are fun and in a fun way. like how he appears in his videos to be enjoying a nice rapport with his gymmates ^^
ok I will give my fitness history because I relate so much to Cen. i am something of an athlete in a sustainable way and I definitely haven't always been.
my big fitness phases were:
finally realizing at age 16 foreveralone that this being unhealthy stuff was gay. I was a fully rotted videogamer with a linux box and it sucked. One day, overnight, I began reading the calories and content on EVERYTHING and ceased to drink soda or eat anything remotely unhealthy overnight. This part was easy because I instantly felt 10x better.
I did prison workouts at 2am, when the temperature in my 4chan cave dropped below 80, and fixed up grampas ole 80s touring/mountain bike. The first time I rode the bike I had to drop onto the road and spin with nausea for 10 minutes. I kept up with it, but my cycling made me miserable and it took tremendous spiritual effort to maintain this routine. I also intermittently tried running during this period, and it always made me *miserable* but i forced the issue because I thought it was the thing to do. It made me feel like a failure that my joints protest at running, and really put a dent in my gainz by psychological means.
Then, going to the college gym, struggling, lifting weight, feeling uncomfortable with all the big dudes and hot girls who apparently knew what they were doing around me. This was sporadic because it caused me such stress. It wasn't fun. I was a very cute twink but I did not achieve impressive shape by any means. UNTIL:
I got recruited by the rowing crew while using one of the ergs in the gym. I highly recommend trying an erg. Pace yourself. Great machine. An extremely hot girl made me go talk to the coach, who was next door to the public ergs. He took me on. My school had a highly competitive crew team and the top people on it were fucking olympians. This was always very stressful and I never got good like they were, but the social aspect of it kept me in the torture. Finally expanding beyond gorgeous skinnyboy, I got into good shape. Finally. Thanks to social pressure and the fun surrounding the activity.
I made a very good friend and lover on crew who was just so beautiful. He was exquisite physically, like 6'3" and beautiful and shy and raised very tightly by a wealthy conservative family. I took him to the gay bar for "ha-ha laughs" and the strippers took him in the back room where they all did blow in their underwear and gave him mass attention and made him feel special. Which he was. I gave him his first sexual contact that night. Yeah, the 6 months or whatever of crew was great.
mania. school drove me to insanity. this was good. one night about 3am on Adderall I sent an overlong, manic email to a person recruiting for a cross country cycling trip, with tents and all that carried on the bike. He was this 19 year old hyper-SouthernBaptist guy who wanted to tour our great land to get closer to God. I asked him all sorts of stupid things like should I bring a .22 to hunt small game, whaddya think?
This dude was probably 160lbs, 5'10", but every muscle on his body was visible. He was a barefoot runner and did it to communicate with God, he said. He was an inspiration. By virtue of his piety, which I respect immensely, he accepted me and we formed a duo and cycled a 5500 mile circuitous coast to coast path, sharing campsites and both scouting for friendly locals to take us in for showers and such. He sipped his first beer with me and helped me escape this creepy old German dude with God signs all over his lawn whom we'd spent the night of my 20th birthday with, who in a very confused way became unhinged and jealous and came on to me: "I love you and I think you are beautiful, not in any sexual way, you are just so beautiful and I want your birthday to be special why won't you let me take you out for a proper cake."
Anyway this is when I finally became hyper-ripped. I remember a gawker's wife saying "how on Earth do you boys get over these grades???" (missouri has INSANE grades across the ozarks, far steeper than anything west of the Rockies, like 16% or something impossible). The gawker cut off our answer to say "these boys are harder than steel, honey". Yes we were.
Key non-blogpost point here is that of the many cyclists we encountered and rode with, I got up way earlier than any and rode far slower. I had 12 hour days where others had 8. A power-walker's level of cardiac output nice n steady, with bursts of intensity to get up hills and all. I was able to complete centuries and 130 mile days like this, 10 or 12 miles an hour steady as she goes and hit camp before the others. One night a big group of us did an overnight double century and became like the talk of Kansas. "Who were those crazy people out on the road on Friday night?? could get killed like that!" I actually fell asleep on the bike and toppled over at about 2mph. It was fun and exploration, not torture.
At the end of this I was Superboy. I was running a 26 mile, 7000 foot climb summit near my hometown weekendly. I inspired my dad and he finally got on his fitness, depression, and got a girlfriend. My being an example saved his life. I am really proud of it.
hiking. Hiking hiking. Hit a new summit every week. Make a list and cross things off. Do super gnarly shit solo and risk injury and death. Or make my loved ones come with me on safer routes. It's super fun and I get great endorphined sex afterwards with lovers who respect me quite a bit for my leadership and sense of ownership in their fitness and wellness. This is how I secured a very high-value male. I saved his life, too, just like my Dad's but a little more hands on. From fat, cigar-chomping alcoholic to lean wiry teetotaling bear male. Having this sort of influence on people keeps your own habits in line. You really can have a huge butterfly effect of goodness just by striving to be beautiful and have good sex.
Nice slow pace always. You don't have to run, ever, (except when you're on cascading shale on a steep face) to get *super* ripped. Just run when your endorphin situation says "it would be fun to run". Don't push. Respect your body's biochemical mechanisms and roll with them. Go slow until it feels good to go fast. Next thing you know you're cruising at a good clip. This 30 minute HIIT daily abuse stuff ain't for me; I'd rather devote a day a week to communing with the nature spirits and doing something highly endurance-taxing. And that gets serious gainz. And it's sustainable and fun and cheap.
Here's the lower body I got (repost) just by strolling up hills regularly in 2018.

Congrats on your fitness Cen and good advice. Calories in / calories out. Do things that are fun. Make it your life and the thing you look forward to; not a chore. That's the only way it's ever really worked for me.
also, for the boys out there: you don't have to get big to be very sexy. Lean runner guys are fucking hot.
I hope this absurdly long earnestpost forgives my shiptoasting.

I like this post because it reminds me I need to be stricter in my calories and harder on the cardio to get a more cut look. You have a nice lean firm backside with feminine curves.
I've heard that long sustained cardio seasons might actually lower your testosterone over time. Where as sprints and hill sprints raise it.
So I'm not sure if I'll continue lots of long distance running -- but hard cardio in general is great for physical appearance. Can be underrated by those trying to get big in strong.

Cen your great progress. You have a lot of potential in your arms judging by your bone structure. So I would keep at it, but maybe add in some of that bro arm shit for accessory work. You only need to do it like once a week with other stuff you do to build them up over time.

Cardio makes you live longer and does the lion's share of making you "feel better" when it comes to exercise. Foregoing it to get big is silly!
When I imagined my future self as a male, I wanted to be tall and very lean with kinda sun-aged skin. Like an old school soldier. It's a great aesthetic. Kinda where Cen is headed, I reckon. Cardio is life. (mead and jeff [and you] are hot too).

I'm not super jacked but I do alright. I went from 230 lbs about 4 years ago to holding at around 188 (at 6ft even). Still feel like I could drop a bit more though. My abdomen looks like a mad science experiment that i'm recovering from

First off.. Damn proud of you dude.. Secondly, your haircutt is top notch in my book!!!!!
