I am 24 and played EQ during summers at my grandparents as a kid.. Classic EQ really hits my nostalgic nerve, and really got me hooked.. I just took a week off from it and having a hard time getting back into the grind, and am wondering if there are any other iconic RPG games from the time that are worth looking into??

Ultima Online. Plenty of player run shards. UO Forever and UO Renaissance are probably the most populated, but there are plenty more.
There was an asherons call 2 emu not long ago. Not sure if still up

The last old school RPG I surprisingly managed to play was Warsong for Sega Genesis. (someone on p1999 recommended it no less, years ago!)

**I eventually felt it was ok to fast forward the battle sequences since we’re adults now 😊

Are you looking for MMO type experience?
EQ was my first and only for a long time so I don’t know old school in that regard
Console?
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy 3 (really FF6 but was 3 in US)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Destiny of an Emperor
Suikoden
Xenogears
Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
Diablo 2
Baulders Gate
Some of these have aged better than others

Star Wars Galaxies. Think EverQuest (it was made by the same people, only a few years after they made EQ), but instead of things being linear and fixed everything is a giant sandbox/open world where even classes aren't permanent. Oh, and it's Star Wars :D
Just be sure that you play on a "pre-Combat Upgrade" server like Basilisk or Awakening.

Nostalgic type games only work if there is actual nostalgia. Going back and playing just any ol game from 90's/00's is going to leave you with a "How in the f#ck did people play this garbage" feel.
You will be much happier playing newer type release IMO

thx for the response guys, i dabbled HEAVILY into D2 as a teen haha. I am going to have to check some of these out tomorrow when i have the time, Star Wars Galaxies sounds very promising i will prob going to start with that one..
The MMO experience is definitely whats makes EQ what it is for sure and that has my attention right now, but i can get into a good single player as well

Neverwinter Nights was good fun as well as Baulders Gate. Bards Tale series is also worth a play through

I basicallly got the internet and then played nothing but EQ and Counterstrike 1.6 for like 12 years straight... Makes me wonder how many decent games I must have missed out on.

I discovered turn based strategy with this game. It took forever to figure out cus I was so young but it’s always been a favorite, basically popped my games can be more than pew pew cherry.
My next fantasy game was Sword of Vermillion, which was also epic.

Agree but it's rough as guts to get into it these days. You kind of had to be there.
Also while Verant/SOE made it, I didn't think many of EQ's senior staff were involved? Raph Koster was the lead and was part of the UO team.
