Dear god my wife loves that show, but I make her wear headphones when she does because it's so awful.

Also, wasn't one of the contestants (one of the ones who made it a later round) listed as a missing person by her mom several years ago (because she said she was on her way home and then never showed up), or something like that?

So it's not like the show only teaches young girls that they are "a worthless, souless object and a man should pick from a bounty of them to please his every desire" ... it also teaches men that they too are "worthless, souless objects and a woman should pick from a bounty of them to please her every desire" :)

Or maybe it doesn't teach either, maybe it just teaches us the same lesson as all reality TV: that the human race is sad and pathetic at times, and many of us (including my wife) like to enjoy the schadenfreude of that combined with a (heavily produced/fake/soap opera) love story.

Humans are complex multi-faceted creatures, and so are our TV shows. A TV show can be more/less feminist, but that doesn't make that inherently good/bad.

To take another example, women can't participate in male pro sports, no matter how good they are (much like blacks were once also prohibited from participating). I'd like to see a future where anyone of any gender can join a professional sports team ... but does that mean I think no one should watch any sports until that happens? Of course not.

We have to live in (and watch the TV shows in) the society we have now. That doesn't in any way preclude us from trying to make the society of tomorrow better.

Wait, a point I originally missed in this thread is that Mick is defending women by chastising the Bachelor. Please Mick, give us your best analysis of why the Bachelor is bad for women, and what message it is sending to us (and why you disagree with that message.)

the Bachelor is bad for feminism because it encourages misogyny and implies that a womans job is to appeal to a male.

Even if you watch the Bachelorette, the women tend to try to appease/appeal to the mens interests, even though the men are the ones that are trying to beguile the female.

Its a show that barbifies young and middle age women across the country, its harmful to any forward progress you've made in screaming at people to stop considering women objects or at the very least, to stop harassing them. It proves that the more you treat woman like shit, the more you harass them, the more you can get from them.

If I was trying to MAGA, I would use state money to fund shows like the Bachelor .

Im not saying the show should be banned but I am saying if you are a self proclaimed feminist, and you watch the show, you've got both a low IQ and are a hypocrite.
