I keep hearing that at 51 the ranger gets a dual wield bonus which makes using 2 handers obsolete. I cannot find any documentation on how this works or what it entails. Does anyone have any details on what actually happens at 51 that makes such a change to their dual wield damage?

More MH bonus dmg = better dps from faster weaps over pure ratio

Scroll down to the damage bonus segment.

It's not a bonus specifically for dual wield, it's the 1h main hand damage bonus. People say that by lvl 51 your bonus has become significant enough that dual wielding is higher DPS than 2h, generally.

Remember you haven't had skill increases since level 39.
Dual wield doesn't work often at lower skill levels, so during the early game it's suggested you speak softly and carry a large stick.
I suspect skill caps between 39 and 51 are smoothed out with velious out. I've levelled several warriors and remember the caps being different levelling kunark vs velious.

I see how this could be true, that by 51 the main hand bonus gets big enough to make the math work. However, that page on melee dmg is clearly not 100% accurate, as my level 20 ranger with 85 1hs and 140 str was hitting for more than 2x base weapon dmg with his main hand, which the formula says is not possible. e.g. my max was 22 with a 10 dmg sword. no str buffs on me at all.
(85 + 140-75)/2 = 1.5, so would take the std 2x :)
The bonus on 2handers is rather more vague, depending on speed of the 2hander, so if someone was a whiz at the math here, show me exactly how much dmg a woodsman staff should be doing at 51 please please!
