Announcing - EverQuest: Battle Royale

A custom EverQuest PvP server that aims to provide the ultimate sandbox PvP experience.

Featuring a roguelike loot system, PvP at any level range, a low level cap, and a RNG-based progression system, this server is designed from ground up to be enjoyable for any EQ player, whether they have tried PvP or not.
In true battle royale fashion, there are rapid season resets and wipes. This, plus the lower level cap, means everyone will always be on a near-equal level playing field.
Experience EverQuest PvP as it was intended to be - chaotic, small-scale, and with the backing of the TAKProject code, database and client... era-accurate for Classic EverQuest.

Features:

No boxing, strict 1 IP limit - the world is yours and yours alone to travel through.
Periodic character wipes - This is so the playing field is evened out every so often, and to keep the experience fresh and populated. Plus, with characters being temporary, there is no commitment to trying the game out.
Rogue-like, full item/coin loot system - Kill your enemies and loot their corpses. Or loot the NPCs that they are killing, and then kill them. Band together with your friends and pillage the world of its treasures. The world is a sandbox, and you must choose your allies carefully.
Small world map - the world of EverQuest is too big, and PvP is often scarce. We've shrunk it down so there's less places to hide.
Bags are no longer safe - You can loot entire bags full of items from your slain enemies. The only thing that will save you is a bank.
Classless system - All players are able to use and scribe any spell scroll, dual wield any item, and track down their enemies. Beware, for when you die, you lose knowledge of all your learned arts.
Gate functionality changed - The Gate spell now has a cast time of 30 seconds. Beware your enemies if you choose to use it.
Only one safe town - North and South Qeynos. This zone is considered a Haven zone, to let you get your bearings before you go out into the world and start PvPing. There is a translocator in the town that will teleport you to a random location, however, if you ask him nicely.. in case the Qeynos Hills are too much for you.
Player names obscured - Remember that saying that you aren't a number... you're a free man? Well, guess what boss; you're a number. You'll have to introduce yourself to your friends in order to find out who they are. Communication will be a big part of the game.
Group restrictions enabled - You must be targeting your groupmember to successfully invite someone to join your group. It's a mutual bond, or partnership... or temporary alliance to kill that guy who stole your wolf.
RNG-based loot system - NPCs throughout the world will have a chance to drop exceedingly rare items during your travels, ranging from armor, to spell scrolls, to weapons, to temporary 'artifact' items that players will have to band together to covet for their group of friends. Spell scrolls will never exceed the level cap.

When the project is closer to completion, I will be announcing a launch date so that everyone can prepare ahead of time to play. Most likely it will be after the Zek server hype.

Sounds very interesting. The loot rules make it sound like you can loot everything off of a vanquished foe's corpse: does that include no-drop items? Or will the server be Fioriona Vie-style with no no-drop items (except for epics which, from the sound of things, won't even exist)?

Also, will there be anything like a leader board or any other way of "benefitting" from doing well? Like would you get any in-game benefits or out-of-game recognition from killing the most (or second most, or ...) people in a season, or keeping a max-level character fully geared for half a season, or anything like that? Or is it just meant to be all about the personal/momentary satisfaction of each kill?

Nothing is no-drop. You can get in a situation where you lose all of your items. In that sense, it's more like FV.

There will be leaderboards, externally on the Discord server.
Ingame, your character name will be appended by the amount of seasons you've won. It's a way of making a name for yourself... literally.

This might be stupid/obvious question, but how do you "win" a season? Have the best kill to death ratio on the server when it resets or something?

There will be a few categories.

Highest KvD Ratio
Total Kills
Longest Kill Streak
Highest Level NPC Defeated

I plan on adding more, but this is what I would like to add. The leaderboard system won't be completely finalized during the pre-seasons period and will be a work in progress while I flesh out mechanics.
I will talk to Speedz about integrating some sort of website that links to a TAKProject account and have a web-based leaderboard as well, so you can see data for past seasons.

Here's what's done so far, copy and pasted from my patch notes on Discord (https://discord.gg/YuDUaN):

-1 IP Box limit implemented.
-Nameless characters implemented
-Tells, Group, and other forms of chat obscure your true identity now.
-Basic implementation of RNG loot is done.
-Classless system is done up until level 20, which will eventually become the cap at launch.
-PVP system - basic attack rules and safezones, have been implemented
-Looting items in bags is now possible.
-Roguelike loot system is now implemented.
-Gate spell has been changed to 30000ms cast time.
-Zones have been restricted to only Antonica zones
-Global loot concept redone:
* Any NPC now has a 15% chance of dropping basic gear/equipment/spells from a global lootdrop. The ultra rare stuff will only drop from NPCs that normally drop the item in classic. Better get those level 20 najena raids ready!
* Enchant Jewelry spells will be moved to Qeynos for this change. (they haven't been yet)
* Famished players (no food/drink and now getting messages that state you are hungry/thirsty) will now lose 1 health per tick, and 1 mana per tick.
* Food / Drink beyond your initial supply must now be fished or looted from other players / NPCs, or crafted. The only food that will show up on merchants is food sold to said merchant.
* Water Flasks have been added to the global fishing table.
* The minimum fishing skill required to fish up fresh fish is now 0.

Battle Royale. Its the new rage in games. Pubg, Fortnite BR, etc etc. A big deathmatch where people fight until only one person is left.

Idea: make the accounts non free. Have people pay like $100 to open an account (in bitcoin, monero or whatever). The cheaters will think twice before risking a ban for a YT.

Warping will be quickly dealt with. We have serversided detection methods that are going to be hooked up to external resources, so if someone is warping we can make an accurate judgement in real time.

TAKProject content. It's accurate for late 2002 EverQuest both in content and mechanics, with a few changes.

The scripts referenced are like NPCs that spawn and walk from Highkeep to Qeynos. Sir Edwin Motte for example.


Other mechanic changes,
Newbie armor/weapon quests are removed, and the anti-twink damage caps / anti-twink AC modifiers are also not in the game.


Regarding resists,
I'm very tempted, due to it being classic, to use the bell curve that Torven described to me for resists, especially considering a lot of resist items will be out-of-reach without dedication and gear backups. Plus, if you hate the guy that's using the pet spell... just kill him and he'll unlearn it. Don't like the guy who's resisting all of your spells? Get a good 2hander and whack his ass dead, then you'll have his full resist set.

Patch Notes for this weekend's changes:

* Water Flasks have been added to the global fishing table.
* The minimum fishing skill required to fish up fresh fish is now 0.
* Fixed a bug where the global lootdrop multiplier would be applied twice when an NPC has multiple items.
* A second roll will now happen with a 5% chance to provide more RNG spells/items to a single NPC's drop table.
* All Luclin-era newbie armor quest items have been removed.
* Spells have been removed from merchants entirely in the same way food was. Spells that are looted and sold to merchants can still be purchased.
* Players now start as a magician until level 10, at which point they become a ranger. This is to work around the issue of not having any mana at lower levels. A proper fix will be eventually applied.
* A translocator has been added to South Qeynos that will teleport you to a random druid or wizard spire.
* Selo's and other bard spells now work on non-bard players.
* Removed anti-twink damage caps from the game
* Removed anti-twink AC adjustment from the game

I agree, it's rather cringey but some survival games are commonly referred to as "Battle Royale" now a days, so it makes sense to use a cringey title so people know what to expect when they enter the game.

Log into the EverQuest Battle Royale server, and create your character. Only race matters, your starting stats do not and neither does your class or starting location.

Please be aware that Qeynos is a safe area; you cannot PvP in this zone, but you can get your bearings and level up a bit before venturing out in the world here. Translocator Sedina is located near the docks in South Qeynos, she can teleport you to a random Druid or Wizard ring if you ask her nicely.
*RULES*

There is no play nice policy on this server. The server administration has one rule - do not cheat, you will be banned. No second chances.

TAKProject requests that you only create one forum account per IP. If you already have a TAKProject account and create a second forum account, you will be subject to punishment by the TAKProject administrators. We cannot help you in cases where your Loginserver account is locked.

An account ban from our services does not affect your ability to play TAKProject, only EverQuest: Battle Royale.

Antonica is huge tbh. Not sure what pop will be there but maybe something (a lot) smaller could be warranted? Like Qeynos to Halas...

It depends on what kind of turnout we get, but generally, I agree.

I'd like to shut off most of the zones, to be completely honest, because it encourages PvP... but I don't want a situation like the other Qeynos-area PVP server I ran where there's people camping the zoneline at each location. Most of the zones won't be exp'able in due to the cap.

I think you raise a valid point about the world size, though. I've changed, for the testing period on Friday, the active zones list to be the following:

A classless server won't have a need for beastlords; other class spells do the job better, and with access to mage pets, you won't really want beastlord pet procs combined with mage pets.

I'm going to open up the server for some testing tonight thru Thursday. Everything will be wiped on Thursday evening in preparation for the weekend test and locked again Thursday night until Friday. I simply need people hammering the server before then so the testing period goes smoothly and we can focus on core mechanics during the weekend test instead of crash-fix-hunting.

Sounds like alot of fun and i'll definitely play. I also considered things like no names and selecting from an ability pool rather than classes so i'm happy to you see you doing that. And the reason is because the best future MMO will have removed all artificial elements that don't fit rationally in the world like names, target rings, etc, and even the UI if possible. And selecting from an ability pool is the only way to balance the game since templates, kits, or classes created unwanted imbalances with abilities you wouldn't choose. I look forward to it.

But if you're going to make all mobs equal then consider at least scaling the loot so we're not encouraged to farm the lowest level mobs forever just to get what we want. Or even divide it by zones or specific mob types. Rather than "any loot drops off any mob". If you put higher tier items in a select zones then it condenses PVP even if all mobs in that zone drop the same loot. Up to you how specific you want to divide it but I think some kind of hierarchy would be good.

Make sure you have the spells file. You can log in with the default one, but it won't let you scribe all spells.

Guards have been fixed.

All players now start as level 9 rangers to work around the no mana issue and an issue where you don't start with any skills.

If you put higher tier items in a select zones then it condenses PVP even if all mobs in that zone drop the same loot. Loot has actually been changed now.

* NPCs in Qeynos will only drop 1-4 spells as part of their global table. They will still drop their standard loot.
* Random spells have been categorized into several different categories: Levels 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19.
* Random armor, gear, and non-spells will now only drop from Level 20+ NPCs in addition to spells from any prior tier.
* The starting spells, Burst of Flame and Minor Shielding, will no longer disappear from your book - ever.

didn't realize there was a custom spells file, that makes sense

level 20+ npcs seems tough to wait until to get some RNG loot

but might be necessary to avoid farming lvl 1 snakes over and over for your riches (them sweet 5pp spell drops)

* Added support for double attack at any level (needs client update still)
* Melee crits now have a base chance of 15% (up from 0%)
* Fixed a crash issue related to OOC
* A PvP Level Range has been enabled. Players within 3 levels of each other can only engage in PvP combat, to prevent hardcore griefing and to make the server more fair.
* Pets have been nerfed to 25% of normal effectiveness across the board as they were too powerful in combination with other class spells.
* Yet another OOC crash fix
* The duration of snare has been reduced to 2 ticks.
* The duration of charm has been reduced to 3 ticks.
* The package for the game has changed (again) and can be found at https://tinyurl.com/eqbrfiles. If you are getting disconnected on login, this is why.
* Rangers now have mana starting at level 1 with the client mod. The player start level has been adjusted back to level 1 from level 9.

Someone figure this one out. I can't create a character as you can see.

- Downloaded the supported windows .zip from the TAKP wiki. (The supported windows client v2.0 (zipped) is available here)
- Replaced the .dll and spell file in the main TAKP folder. (The latest link Secrets posted https://tinyurl.com/eqbrfiles)
- Main login screens work fine. Default settings and resolution.
- No scripts or other programs running. Tried without OBS open.
- Restarted
- Tried another mouse
- Tried moving the character select window around, clicking fast / slow etc
- It will randomly go to the next screen and randomly select a class / race sometimes
- Escape works and goes back
- Tried changing the resolution on setup screen and on my computer to match it
- Tried deleting the eq ini
- Tried the msi installer
- Googled it
- Tried disabling all Luclin models
- Tried running with XP / SP3 compatibility mode.
- Tried running as admin
- I'm on Windows 7

Someone figure this one out. I can't create a character as you can see.

- Downloaded the supported windows .zip from the TAKP wiki. (The supported windows client v2.0 (zipped) is available here)
- Replaced the .dll and spell file in the main TAKP folder. (The latest link Secrets posted https://tinyurl.com/eqbrfiles)
- Main login screens work fine. Default settings and resolution.
- No scripts or other programs running. Tried without OBS open.
- Restarted
- Tried another mouse
- Tried moving the character select window around, clicking fast / slow etc
- It will randomly go to the next screen and randomly select a class / race sometimes
- Escape works and goes back
- Tried changing the resolution on setup screen and on my computer to match it
- Tried deleting the eq ini
- Tried the msi installer
- Googled it
- Tried disabling all Luclin models
- Tried running with XP / SP3 compatibility mode.
- Tried running as admin
- I'm on Windows 7

Ideas?



Try disabling Windows Defender or any AV you have active.

Tried without AV or windows firewall. Same issue. Thanks for the suggestions though. Could be lots of things on my end like updating drivers, etc so i'll mess with it.

Server will be wiped sometime today, and the next phase of testing will begin on Friday, at 9PM EST. We recommend you get the client if you're interested in this, as it will be in a permanent live state after the next period of testing starts.

* Enchant Jewelry spells will be moved to Qeynos for this change.
* Famished players (no food/drink and now getting messages that state you are hungry/thirsty) will now lose 1 health per tick, and 1 mana per tick.
* Food / Drink beyond your initial supply must now be fished or looted from other players / NPCs, or crafted. The only food that will show up on merchants is food sold to said merchant.
* Water Flasks have been added to the global fishing table.
* The minimum fishing skill required to fish up fresh fish is now 0.

Level ranges are limited to 3 levels for pvp. It'll be chaos initially, and the hope is with an exp bonus, nothing will become too imbalanced.

Some changes for the release today. The goal is to make things more accessible for new players, less jarring when you die and generally more on an even-level playing field for everyone:


* Food / Drink have returned to merchants. The changes to fishing are still in.
* Races who can normally use kick can once again use kick.
* Players now start with a Short Halberd*, which is a 2 handed slashing weapon with 8 dmg / 51 delay for jousting purposes in PVP.
* Players now start with a Fire Wedding Ring*, which is a +55 hp ring with 5 ac. The intent with this item is to make initial leveling & general pvp less brutal for players so that they do not get one shot by spells early on.
* There will later be quests ingame to upgrade the Fire Wedding Ring* and Short Halberd* which involve a mixture of PVP and PVE goals.
* Added a Backpack* to new players. It has Large capacity, and 8 slots.
* Players now start with a Club* and Club* has had its damage/delay changed to 3/24.
* Droprates for global mobs per-level-range have been increased to 50% for a single drop and 35% for an additional drop. This is to make re-gearing upon death less brutal.
* Lord Elgnub in Blackburrow's snake pit has had his HP doubled, class changed to Warrior, and spell list removed. He has significant buffs to one of his resists. He is considered the 'boss' NPC, and drops hotly contested items. Will you be the one to slay him?
* Portal/Gate spells have been removed from global loot tables.
* The level range on PVP has been increased to +/- 4. (up from +/- 3)
* Starting spells are now scribed and memmed on character creation as opposed to having to scribe/mem them on first login.
* Kick can now be used by races that can normally not use the ability, starting at level 5.
* Captain Rohand in South Qeynos now sells (for free) the Short Halberd, Club, Dagger, Fire Wedding Ring, and Backpack for players who have lost theirs.

The testing period has gone great so far. Plenty of mechanics being fleshed out, and some great ideas being generated by myself and our community.

Sweeping changes run through the land:


* All classic-era zones are now open for business, including Plane of Hate, Plane of Fear, The Hole, and Plane of Air. Temple of Cazic Thule is sealed off, as the NPCs from that era are in the Feerrott.
* One item loot is allowed in PvP.
* Kill credit has been re-added to the game. You may now only loot creatures or players you have slain.
* PVP still is restricted to +/- 4 levels.
* The level cap has been increased to 50.
* The classless system now has a cap of 50, and spells drop up until level 50. After 50, you are on your own for obtaining spells through traditional EverQuest means.
* The global loot table has been expanded to all mobs, and can contain any spell or gear drop. The higher level the NPC, the higher chance an item will drop.
* Loot tables have been added for 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 that contain only spells.

Played some today. Seemed fun, but nobody around. The restart/wipe mechanic is something I don't know if I can put up with long term, though, but we'll see. I tend to not like eq pvp but this is different enough that it might work. I'd like to see realm mechanics and ownership of contested buff points/camps/areas/zones. Gives people somethign to really gang up for.

I approve of everyone being rangers :) OH THE IRONIES

As a reminder, there will be a character progression (level) and skills wipe on May 18th. Players who have participated in testing will be reset to level 1 on this date. Scribed Spells and Gear will remain from the testing period as a way of saying 'thank you' to those who were dedicated to testing.

The server will be officially completing the test phase on May 18th, at 12pm EST. It will be locked until hosting is transferred to a new location. The estimated downtime will be about 9-12 hours.

An HP regen bonus is now active, and functions similar to meditate. It requires you to sit (or be on a horse) and out of combat.
A mana regeneration bonus is now in for sitting players. It requires you to sit (or be on a horse) and out of combat to get the full effect, otherwise standard meditate bonus is applied.

The Gnoll Slayer quest now rewards Greater Healing for the intermediate reward and Superior Healing for the final reward.
Efreeti Lord Djarn and The Ghoul Lord now have a 15% chance to drop Complete Healing on death, in lieu of their normal drops.(edited)

* Discs are now enabled, all of them are available starting at level 45 and drop randomly from 45+ mobs and the global table. They occupy a spell slot, and require a refresh before being active.(edited)
* NPCs that are in North Qeynos or South Qeynos will no longer drop any spell from the global loot table at an alarming rate.
Lady Vox, Lord Nagafen, Cazic-Thule and Innoruuk have been reduced in difficulty significantly, but still should pose a challenge to a group of 2-6 players.

I was alone in South Qeynos. After talking in /ooc, it turned out there were 3 people in Crushbone. Server list displayed 4 total people so I suppose that was it.

Isn't the world WAY too big for the population? I said that before, but again, maybe I'm missing something?

If the current pop is in single digits and the server is supposed to be a constant balls out PvP arena, wouldn't something like TWO SMALL ZONES be more than enough? Like, QHills and BB ?

I want to play on a Secrets server because I know he will end up making it good. But I don't want to have to cross 20 zones before seeing another player (we have R99 for that already).

The problem with a small world is that players run out of PVE content rather quickly, and there is no incentive to log in, let alone PvP. Content creation is a huge undertaking for a 1-person staff to make, and I would rather rebalance existing content than make brand new content in a small area.

You also have the issue of the server never reaching a peak population beyond 10. That is a huge problem, and nothing will solve a general disinterest without changing up the formula that is uninteresting to players. The classless concept in itself is loads of fun, and should be a game in itself. Classless system - All players are able to use and scribe any spell scroll, dual wield any item, and track down their enemies. Beware, for when you die, you lose knowledge of all your learned arts.

This sounds amazing.

I'm trying to think what the most OP spell combo would be.

Having Lich, Canni, and Clarity would be awesome.

Anti-plugging code added for launch. While you can still escape PVP combat and leave the game, you get rooted upon logging back in for 8 ticks if you attempt to zone when you are damaged in pvp combat.

A damage amount cap is implemented now per level of player you are attacking. For example, a level 1 player can only receive a maximum of 5 damage in pvp, level 2 can receive a maximum of 10 damage in a single pvp hit, level 3 max of 15 etc. This is temporary and will make it easier to play at lower levels.

Actually it would be fun, indeed, to maybe have a non-PvP version of this server, as well.

Everything normal, but classless.

I wonder what minimum number of players would be required to take down some raid targets, if everyone can cast CH and Ice Comet.

I've changed the anti-plugging code a bit.

* Anti-plugging code has been changed. When you zone within 60 seconds of being damaged in PvP, you will be rewound just outside of the zoneline you entered until the timer elapses. The timer is refreshed every time you are damaged.

The server has largely changed direction this weekend, based on player feedback:
- The focus on the server has shifted to a PVE mentality based on the popularity of the classless system. As such, the sole focus will be on RNG loot and classless gameplay. The 'no play nice policy' rule is still in effect.
- The focus on FFA PVP and item loot has been removed, instead, disputes will be handled in the future through guild wars as opposed to contesting raid mobs.
- The plan for guild wars: Guild wars will be a non-consensual activity. When a guild war is activated, no one can leave the guild until the guild war period has elapsed and are forced to compete. When a player who is not in a guild engages a raid mob, they are instantly death touched. Raid NPCs will be rebalanced accordingly.
- Starting stats have changed from a base of 75 to a base of 125.
- The exp rate has been drastically increased.
- AAs have been enabled.
- The level cap is now 65, and RNG loot scales all the way to level 65 mobs and beyond.
- As a result of this, the server name has changed to EQ: Classless, and the website has changed to http://eqclassless.com
