I will be starting my first character soon on the PVE server. I was thinking of making an enchanter. I only really care about being able to join groups easily and making some friends, the best part of classic EQ. Is this a good choice? Or would another class be better suited for getting groups regularly?

You'll have an easy time finding groups as an Enchanter from level 16 and on. Its difficult if your not familiar with the game to play. However its one of the four most overpowered and game breaking classes, and capable of farming very well. Its a good choice.

Good starting classes that are easier like Druid will have trouble finding groups only at the very late levels.

Shamans are sort of in the middle difficulty wise (the learning curve is nice as you go), and it too is one of the overpowered classes and always loved in groups right from the getgo.

I strongly recommend picking a class that can solo: Bard, Druid, Enchanter, Magician, Necromancer, Shaman, or maybe Shadow Knight or Wizard ...

... unless you really want to go 100% into grouping, in which case go Cleric, Rogue, Paladin or Warrior.

One other thought: any tank or hybrid class is going to need gear a lot more than any caster (wis or int) class.

Play what you want to play.

In this case what you want to play is also a class that has a steep learning curve but once you "get it" you will be very successful and will have plenty of options to solo and group at will.

To be honest even if you don't "get it" you'll still get group offers and will be semi-effective. Enchanters are that good as a class.

Enchanter is a good choice. Cleric is too but enchanter has a bit more variety in what it does which will keep you from burning out <3

Pick what you want, ignore discussion about gear, except if you want to play warrior. Some class will level faster without gear, but you will have no problem playing sk/pal without gear, random scrounged armor and a 100p weapon from tunnel will get you a long way. It's way more important to pick a class you like.

play the class you truly desire first its a long journey to 60 (several months minimum for average player)

If your favorite class sucks at getting plat or some aspect of the game that you want to do and you feel limited on your favorite class, then at that time roll a alt to do what you lack (farm plat / pl ppl / port / rez / etc)

If you want to find groups easily, I wouldn't recommend enchanter (even though it's a great class to play). There are tons of enchanters. Most of the time if you zone in Seb, you'll see at least one enchanter LFG at the zone in.

I think it's easier to find a group if you're a cleric or a shaman. Shaman also gives you a strong solo potential.

If your goal is to make friends, cleric, rogue or warrior are great choices because you will be forced to make friends to achieve anything.

All classes can group level 1-60 buddy! Welcome on the server :)
Levelling up, when you see "Looking for more" messages in the regular hot zones, like Crushbone, Oasis, Unrest, Mistmoore, City of Mist, etc. it will often be for a healer or a tank... but crowd control is another cornerstone in a group and enchanters are very popular groupmates. you might have a little bit more competition, it is true, because bad enchanters don't stack so well... but if you want to be social and make friends, this will overcome everything anyway. play what you want and what you want to look at for 1000+ hours :P

I have never sat LFG for more than 20-30 minutes in 58 levels as an enchanter. There are tons of enchanters, but enchanters also have the opportunity and ability to go into pretty much any XP zone in the game and solo. Plus, with OT hammer you are never more than 2 minutes away from one of the best 55+ XP zones in the game as an enchanter (Howling Stones). Enchanters don’t stack well with each other, but they do stack better than either Shamans or Clerics because charm pet DPS is great DPS.

Ench is really nice for all of the reasons that people have already mentioned. On top of that it's a great class for days when you only have 30-45 min to play (not a great amount of time if you want to group). With an ench you are still able to accomplish something in that time because they are such effective soloers.

Rogue was my first class and I can say it was a great choice. Basic gear is inexpensive and you're always wanted in groups

ENC actually stack really well with other enchanters. I duo'd with a another ENC about a week ago just to help him get some exp faster (hes not 60 yet), its actually quite hilarious 2 charm pets melted shit faster than most 6man groups + can cover each other on charm breaks. So yea IMO enchanters stack fine with other enchanters

Enchanters stack terribly when both are trying to CC. They’re perfectly fine when the duties are allocated to charming.

I started with a necro a druid and a shaman, so far for me the druid has been the most fun, but I usually go solo around exploring due to being afk at odd intervals. ;)

If you want to group shaman is very good! But has the versatility of being able to solo too.

I see mid level shamans soloing all the time, rooting then dotting guards haha.:D

Depends on what you want to do too.

Enchanter is a great choice.

Was my first class too...and P99 is my first time ever playing EQ.

if you're brand new to EQ i suggest starting with something like cleric to learn the basics of the game. otherwise you run the risk of ending up a bad enchanter because your noob habits have become ingrained and 2nd nature. also you'd need at least 7k for a goblin ring and gcd item!

I'd go sham as well. The early levels are a bit of a pain but certainly a powerful and demanded class (that's a bit less squishy).

Regardless of what class you pick, shoot a PM if you need a free ride and bind to another more populated zone.

Thank you all for the input. I made an enchanter and a necro lol. Necro for when I don't have time for grouping and enchanter for when I do.
