Apparently Mayong Mistmoore was an old Dungeons and Dragons character that one of the beginning developers had made back in around 1981. There's pictures of the old player sheet out there. They incorporated the character into the game with a few minor tweaks, the original Mayong was an Elf Fighter. This would be the same developer that implemented the Faction system into the game, as well as various other D&D style game idea's. The city Grobb was one of the cities from his old D&D campaign as well.

The amount of inspiration and creativity that went into EQ always ceases, then unceases to amaze me. If anyone else knows of any cool back story to game lore or interesting info about the game let me know about it.

Oh yeah, Mayong is one of Bill Trost's D&D creations. A lot of the lore he brought to the EQ world was heavily D&D inspired. The city of Neriak is basically Norrath's version of Menzoberranzan, the underworld city of Dark Elves from Forgotten Realms fame (Drizzt's home).

His original planes map is pretty cool also:

Plane of Love!?! Can you imagine how many babies woulda been made there? :D

I believe if Trost wasn't a part of making the game, we would have ended up with something we probably wouldn't still be playing today.

Thanks Bill!

My warrior on p99 is an exact copy of the Dwarf Fighter I was playing in a D&D 5E campaign before my DM had to take a hiatus for the birth of a child. I even try to role play true to his personality as often as I can.

I needed my fantasy adventure fix and found a random reddit post about p99, downloaded the game, and it was all over.

Nice, I read that Blackburrow was one of Bill's old D&D settings that they put into the game as well. Classic Everquest was pretty damn close to a computer version of D&D in alot of ways.

The Plane of Mud sounds pretty badass. It would explain where all the Muddite men from the Gorge of King Xorbb are from.
