How many dragons are there just in P99 Everquest?

Really, how many unique dragons exist in this game? My guess would be between 100 and 200, and probably closer to 200.

That's INSANE. No other game in the world has ever come close?? And we're talking just up to the Velious expansion...

40-ish raid-encounter dragons, give or take. Plus the WW torpor-shaman/small group dragons. But hell, there could be hundreds of dragons, and EQ will never be D&D.

Once removed from the table, it is hard to maintain that level of creativity and freedom of gaming. D&D will always be the goal of which game developers try to catch a whiff of.

I mean, do you count ToV and SS dragons as unique? Almost all of them are named.

I guess if we are talking dragonkin, like wyverns and whatnot. Are there that many actual dragons though? I am too far removed from ToV action to do more than speculate.

Not even close to 200. Not even close to 100.

Wrong.

Of course!

I agree, I was comparing it to the old D&D mmo. Nothing is the same as actual PnP, but the lightning in a bottle that's EQ does do many things a lot more immersively, at the same time. The sheer visual experience, and ALL THESE DRAGONS...

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification re: D&D MMO

Don't think you'll reach 100 dragons unless you include dragon-like creatures such as wurms, drakes, constructs, and sea monsters in your count. Sticking solely to proper dragons, I think you'll stall somewhere around 70 or so. The overwhelming majority of those inhabit a couple zones in Velious, with probably over half in Western Wastes alone.

Never got the appeal of D&D. Still don't.

It was before my time I think. My roommates were double my age and grew up with it the same way I have with video games. They enjoyed the social experience, having their friends over and fixing good foods. I watched them a few times but it was never my thing, I could do the video game versions of it though.

EQ is influenced by D&D lore, I am partial to the Salvatore dark elf books, Menzobarranzan and Neriak are alike in some ways. Not a fan of Tolkien or the films.

Eq wouldn't be Eq without the influences of D&D and tbh my beef with the series came when they broke away from the RPG roots and began focusing more on video game and ease of life adjustments.

My dark elf is supposed to have violet tinted vision. If they were serious back in the day I shouldn't be able to see far in daylight. Ultravision did have some of this effect back in classic at night. In the books their vision seen body heat almost like the Predator.

Infravision was a type of vision that many non-human species had, in addition to "normal sight", in Dungeons & Dragons. In 3.0 and later, the ability was removed from the game and replaced with darkvision. The primary reason for the change was that, given its name, infravision implied that the creature detected the infrared spectrum of light resulting in a variety of special considerations. Like darkvision, infravision allowed a creature to see in complete darkness up to a set distance, though not in or through darkness that was magical in origin.

Creatures able to use infravision are often able to shift between the normal spectrum of light and that of infravision at will. While making use of the infrared spectrum, their eyes glow red

Your eyes glow red.

Dragons in in this era may as well be orcs - their abilites are pretty simplistic.

I don't think the Gods could be killed by mortal player scrubs. Dragons in EQ are also tiny, Veeshan was the size of Norrath. The Great Divide zone is from her claw mark when she gave life to the planet. So, yeah, we do have dragons but the dragons are weenies. Having said that, Wuoshi can kill me pretty quick when she doesn't like what I have done.

The Velium Crawlers in Crystal Caverns are sea dragons, do they count?

Technically Dagarn, Eashen, and Ikiatar are dragonkin so... rip. There is more like 40 actual "Dragons" (four legs and wings) but thats still quite a bit.

On the contrary, I grew up with Legends and Lore... ie Deities and Demigods. A D&D compendium of heroes, monsters, deities, and, well, demigods. It gave stats to mythological personages like Thor, Zeus, Quetzlcouatl. The most HPs a god ever had was 400 - strong, but even considering the legions of defensive abilities most gods could boast, eminently killable...
