Honestly? Delete.

If you're willing to try to accommodate a bad puller/bad dps/bad tank with expensive gear, I'd say consider an enchanter, shaman or necro.

But really, try to get him to reroll a better duoing melee, like a monk or a shadowknight.

seriously go with a shaman, first 25 lvls will be sorta tough *worse with a cleric, but once the shaman gets haste, you guys will have np duoing, but once lvl 30, it will get a bit tough, best to make sure the ranger gets well geared, high ac that is

enchanter or necro, Snare + fear make it pretty easy

Another vote for shaman. I had some very successful duos with a ranger back in the day.

Any class that can fear. It'll be most mana efficient when the mob never hits the ranger. I duoed on Live with a bard using fear song in Kunark with all of the open space to do so.

Shadowknight would be the best melee option

I'd vote necro. Necro is already a beast while solo'n, so it can compensate for the weakness of ranger. Unlike something like a Mage though, ranger does have some synergy with the Necro, being able to melee things that are feared, provide snares so necro can spend mana on more efficient damage, and later on SoW the necro to save some money on SoW pots. Track's always nice too.

The necro will obviously level slower than solo due to that hefty hybrid penalty and the ranger not fully pulling it's weight, but best option I see.

necro/shaman/cleric/enchanter would all be good choices. Necro for its general awesomeness when soloing anyways. I would stay away from mage/wizard/druid as options, their skills wouldn't synergize as well with a ranger.

Shaman for having the start of a good group (especially at later levels) while providing buffs/heals/DPS.

Cleric for also having the start of a good group, great heals, and fear kiting (ranger snare, cleric fear). Kills would be the slowest with the Cleric but could be sped up by prioritizing on undead.

Enc+ranger can fear kite also, plus having the buffs. Enc can also mez/stun mobs if they resist snare and keep them that way till snare lands and then proceed to fear kite. They have some DoT action and nuke action. If you use your pets smart they can help add a lot to your DPS too.

If duo'ing with another melee, Shadowknight would be the best option so you could fear kite. Monk would be possible, let them do the tanking and have the ranger carry a bunch of bandages to help minimize downtime.

However if you do go with 2 melee options, you're never going to come close to ranger + one of the caster options listed above in terms of duo efficiency and you're going to hurt your group desirability since ranger is a non-essential grouping class.

I'd have to say Enchanter/Ranger would likely be the best option if you want to balance the amount of xp you gain as a duo while also having good group desirability.

If you're doing a flat out duo and will never ever group, then go with the necro.

Any healer would do. Depends on how badly you want ports (druid) or slows (shaman), but Cleric would probably be the best overall choice.
