So rocking my first caster in many, many years. How do you all organize your spell books? Specially now that the right-click thing is gone?

I have mine set up in stacks

first line or 2 are damage spells, arranged via level

next lines are buffs for self

next are buffs for others

next are the randoms like res's and dispells.

Just by level.

The first couple pages are spells I frequently used, then i threw stuff i knew i was never going to use into the back (really low level nukes, except level 1 nuke which is useful for stuff, low level pets, lower level shielding spells, etc).

I just put all the spells i regularly use in the front then put spells further in that I use less. Kinda group like spells, ie Illusion and such. I deleted a lot of my lower level spells that I won't need again.

For just about all my casters, first few pages are all heals related spells, the next ones are direct damage/DoT based spells along with debuffs, then buffs, then random spells that don't really fit into the other groups.

All prioritized by level and usally they are all clumped together (direct damage with direct damage, strength buffs with strength buffs, ETC.). Started doing this when I first started my shaman back when EQ first launched, that way I keep everything organized and could switch out spells with relative ease without having to dig through my spellbook to find it.

What can I say, I like to be neat with my spells :D

Alphabetized by level. Level 1's being on the first page, 50's in the back

First 2 pages - Spells I use all the time
Next 4 pages - Stuff I use occasionally
The rest - Crap I never use, low level spells, etc.

first page are:

Heroism
Shield of Words
Symbol of Naltran
Divine Barrier
Complete Healing
Superior Healing
Gate
Ressurection
Remedy
Immobilize
Pacify
Cure Disease
Retribution
Banish Undead
Sound of Force

Next page are all my resists, fears, IVU, food/drink summon) then after that it's pretty random

I push all "obsolete" spells later in the book. Of the remaining spells the breakdown is as follows (depending on class):

1st page or two has attack spells: DD then AE then DOTs with each category ordered by damage output.
Next page (if not incorporated in 2nd page above) has other combat spells such as snare, root, debuffs etc.
Next page or two is buffs and/or heal, cure and other health spells
Next page: For pet classes, the pet summon spells and other related spells for pets.
Next is summon spells: summon water, food, etc.
Next is utility spells such as bind, invisible, see invisible, gate, etc.
Next is anything else that is not obsolete.

Again there are variations depending on class. Some pages my be combined or split.

As a druid, I use the first two pages for my 'go-to' spells, the ones that mainly fill my 8 slots; i.e. stuff like best root, nuke, snare, harmony, sow, skin, etc..

The next page is general utility spells that I bring in only for certain situations, but ones that still come up somewhat often. Stuff like Invis, levitate, group buffs, and evacs go here.

Page 4 is all my Ring spells. Page 5 and most of 6 is all my Circle ports, with the remaining spots filled out by left over utility spells, or a nuke spell memmed specifically for a camp i'm xp'n at in this range.

Next few pages are just the really situational stuff like summon food, sunbeam, wind stun spells, and other things that I very rarely use, but the situation may come out at somepoint.

After that, I shove all the random crap in no particular order in the very back.

On my necro I just created this is how I think I am going to do it. Only level 4 now so there isn't a huge need yet, trying to get some more ideas.

Do you find at the high-level you wish you had done this backwards from (now) 60->1 instead of 1->60?

Yes, but at the time I didn't feel like calculating backwards and thought I would make a mistake which when dinging 50 would force me to shift all my spells like one slot to the right.

One thing you may wanna check, which I can't remember is when you open your book and flip to a page, if you reopen it later the page stays on the last page you were on. If that is true then reversing the order wouldn't hardly matter.

Also make sure to leave room for velious!

As a WIZ I have mine set up as follows (bearing in mind I don't keep older spells. I just have spells that are the most current version of that particular spell line).

Pages:
1-2: Direct Damage Nukes by level keeping only the best of each type (Fire/Cold/Magic)
3-4: PBAEs, Targeted AEs, and Rains (again by type)
5-6: Miscellaneous Spells like Yonder/Gate/Snare/Root/Annul Magic/Bind Sight etc
7-8: Buffs
9-10: Self-only Gates
11-12: Portals

This.

First two pages are my normal spellset - AoE, highest nuke, gate, bind affinity, current shielding spell, root, snare, etc, along with my three most often-used buffs - See invis, invis, and chillsight (I'm a blind erudite wizard).

Pages three and part of four are all of my gate (self-port) spells. The rest of page four and part of page 5 are all of my portal spells. Page 6 are evacs. Page 7 are supplemental buffs (resistant skin, elemental shield, steelskin, etc).

I'm planning on organizing the rest of it according to level, descending. But for right now it really doesn't affect gameplay, so i might do it while bored and waiting for something in a raid or something...

Make use of the /book command. You can set up social buttons with names, and set the button to that book's page. So if I want to give a port, the command would be /book 7 to open to page 7. etc.

As I outgrow a spell, I will put it on page 50 and work my way back. I never put the lower nukes back there, because there is a chance you will be looking to scale your damage instead of overkill of a higher mana nuke.

But to answer the question:
1-2 is my primary loadout
3-4 is misc stuff I use periodically (EB, Lev, Invis, resist buffs)
5-6 self ports
7-8 group ports
9-? everything else

Page 1 /2 = stuff I use all the time (heals, rezzes, IVU, buffs, gate, bind, root).

The rest are in groups by type -- lulls, stuns, nukes, resist buffs, cures, undead, summoned, AE, roots / fear, misc crap. With old unused heals and buffs way at the end.

I'm also fussy enough to have my lower level spells on the bottom and highest on top of each row.

I never did use the "load spell by type" from the UI because I could /book 5 to get to resists more quickly then I could meander through that menu.

bumping since spell sets have been removed with the last patch. I think my current by-level arrangement needs an update.

^ solid set-up / advice

I never used [click gem] to scribe spells and [spell sets] until waaay later (i was late to the party)
even when i started using these features i never lost my desire to keep my books organized and in order.
in the same fashion as Rasah describes

I pretty much have everything i use often on the first 4 pages, all buffs together, everything for cc together. I also have a few pages for "junk-spells" all the spells that have been outdated and i wont use ever again, those are at like page 20+ . Everytime a spell gets upgraded i put the old one to the junk spells so i dont have to worry about them.

But i miss spellsets anyway :(

As a Druid...
1st page = fire + ice nuke, superior + greater healing, ensnare + root, sow + gate.
2nd page = magic dot + fire dot, single + group regen, skin buff + coat buff, wolf form + strength

Etc.

1st 5 pages include damage spells (single, AOE, Rain), dots, heals, buffs (speed, hp, regen, str, resists, lev, eb), snare, root, gate+egress, charm+animal tash+fear, summon food/water
Pages 6 and 7 are all my port spells. The rest is just backfilled when I get new spells

I do it by spell category. Healing - buffs - nukes - dots - debuffs - utility. I like to have each column or two dedicated to an entire spell line, like minor healing - light healing - etc. This results in having to sift through a lot of pages what have various lower-level spells I don't use anymore, but I still like seeing all my lines coming down, gives a nice sense of progression. Plus, hitting that 'next page' button a few times really doesn't take that long.

60 Cleric.
First pages utility/rez/da's/invis/calms etc
Second/third DPS/AE's/stuns
Fourth/fifth Buffs + heals

Then a few random spells, and everything else is deleted.

Page 1 and 2 are for spells I use all the time. 3 and 4 are for less frequent spells. The rest of the pages are where I randomly throw the spells I've leveled past and never use.
