Ghesta brought this up in another thread, and I'm afraid a great idea is going to get buried in RnF drama, so I'm reposting this.
I say remove the ability to OOC till you hit level 20. :)
I dunno why nobody said this sooner, it's a rule pervasive throughout many mmo's and online games, and it has been shown to be a simple and effective way to filter idiocy.

This is a great idea, and I fully support it. I think if many people also support it, we may be able to get GM staff support. Please post your thoughts.

While this would eliminate some problems, I don't think its a great idea. I have a level 8 druid and a level 10 cleric. I have played for hours and hours. I can't participate in some discussions?

Generally I keep to myself, unless I answer someones questions. Which brings another point. Its a great place for newbs to ask questions. Although they can use shout probably.

I support this. Except what about newbies that have legit questions?

I'm level 12 (almost 13 when I get back around to levelling vs. exploring and questing). I actually support this idea (although it doesn't effect me either way - I keep OOC off).

But the best solution IMO is to go back to the classic per-zone OOC. If not now, maybe around when we hit 1000 users or so.

fwiw, if you haven't tried playing with OOC turned off, even for a little while, you should. It is amazing how much more classic feeling it is without the constant (non-classic quantity) OOC spam.

I agree, and disagree...

Jeebus makes a good point. I, myself am currently under level 20. In all cases when I do /ooc its game related, and it is a legit question to be asked. Being level 20+ doesn't mean the player behind the character will be "less idiotic". Idiotic issues, such as drama, "He said She said" arguements are caused by people of all levels, shapes, and sizes. In most cases higher level people (usually in high end guilds) are the cause for most drama or game related arguements.

I don't know, just my opinion :P

Maybe not lvl 20, but level 10 or so would be great. In the mean time, a simple extra channel (/advice) channel can be put in for the people under 10 who need help / have questions.

I for one am tired of the faggit who spams ooc with the paragraph sex story, atleast let him spam /advice so i can turn it off and not miss out on the great fun of OOC

or instead of forcibly policing chat. maybe we can either be adults about it and deal with it, or just turn off OOC on your client. Why do people these days always need things to be done for them instead of doing it themselves?

This would prevent Spammers and thats about it.

people could not log in a lvl 1 named iwanttospamu and tell us real time roleplay stories that should be kept in the bedroom.

it would not stop idiots tho...

P.S. /ooc Are dark elfs in game yet...
/ooc How do I port to the nexus...

I am of two minds here.

I would personally love to see it however...
When I started out on this server OOC was a great help to me (granted ooc did not look in November like it does now).

It's still better than many ideas.

You realize when I said that I was being 100% sarcastic right? That would be an absolutely stupid thing to do. I have OOC and auctions in their own window. When it gets stupid, I don't look at that window.

Anyone who can't figure that out on their own deserves to get annoyed.

I help at least 5 or 6 people a day who ask (legitmate) questions in OOC. Why remove that?

If you REALLY want to stop OOC, then make it zone wide, not server wide. That way the noobs can still ask noob questions. But I see no problem with ooc other than the "sex spammer" who i toss on ignore within one or two seconds of his messages.

Not to disagree with you, however..
How often does this occur, and if it does, wouldn't /ignore take care of the problem?

I think the way OOC operates now is beneficial for the community, at least until their are plenty of people on the server to where it can be broken by zone.

How dare you sir! Why should I have to click my mouse a few times to adjust the chat options and windows to my liking when I can try to get the devs to force things upon others? Who the hell do you think you are coming in here all high and mighty with your reasonable and fast solutions?!

It'd be more appropriate to limit them to 4, because grinding through 3 is rough as a motherfucker.

No one will grind a character through 3 just to spam that bullshit.

Let's not punish legitimate players for the actions of the retarded.

If ooc were limited to level 20, then all the spam would go into auction instead of ooc.

I honestly like having ooc being the default place for spam, so I have one easily filterable spam channel.

If your going to go a "non-classic" solution. Make ooc zonewide enable chat channels make everyone join a general chat by default.

Could anybody come up with a worse idea than to limit worldwide /ooc to lvl 20?

EQ was a rough game when we first started playing, and it's still a rough game after an 8 year break. There's a lot of questions newcomers have, and a lot of questions rusty vets have. You shut down /ooc, and you might as well say "Fuck you" to anybody who enjoys the game but finds it pointless when they can't get any help with the simple things that don't make sense if you haven't played. So do we want a lower population?

Beyond the silliness of the proposal, is it that hard to just turn off/ignore/not look at /ooc? Stop whining over irrelevant shit that while sometimes annoying, is extremely helpful, ESPECIALLY newcomers (which we want MORE of, not less).

So all new comers to the server should turn off ooc when some dude spams with erotic novels? So we should totally forget about ever using ooc because of one spammer? So we shouldn't fix what is broken?

Be sure to let the young kids and old men who play this server know about your fix too.

I wouldn't be opposed to a level 5 limit on sending tells and OOC. There's already code support to allow for this in EQEmu.

Would just be a matter of wanting to, which now we have a reason to do so.

Since presumably this is all about the idiot with the paragraph-long sex spams, why not just ban his IP address? Yeah, he may go log in from a friend's computer, then let's ban that one. Surely there would be a limit to how many IP addresses he could access for an online game?

You want OOC disabled for everyone so you dont have to read it.

But you cant disable it for yourself because then your being forced to give up OOC because of others and that is not fair.

Makes perfect sense!

You nailed it IMO. Its just the select few that don't care about getting banned. Instead of removing a very important tool for our new comers, lets just focus on removing the idiots and not everyone.

<---agree. Especially for folks who start rarely played chars (a barb in halas, anyone?) where you can go HOURS and be the only soul in the zone? Been there done that.

Filter /ooc, get faster typing /ignore but right now it would do more harm than good to put a level range on it. I know in SOD everyone started in a beginner's guild, why not implement this for noobs and get it off /ooc?

Hasbinbad
02-22-2010, 12:10 PM
Noobs don't need /ooc.
I'm sorry, that's a ridiculous premise.
Noobs are perfectly capable of doing /who all <myclass> 30 50, and find someone who is higher level to help them learn shit. They will learn better things and not have to filter a million "wtf noob?" responses when they ask a question to the masses. I've played at least a dozen games with a minimum level for open chat, and it's NEVER EVER set me back at ALL. The ONLY people this would inconvenience are IDIOTS who can figure out how to /ooc but can't figure out how to send a tell, and the jackasses who make level 1 characters to spam.

Dac321
02-22-2010, 01:52 PM
Sorry Hasbinbad,

There is no way I can agree with you. OOC is way to vital. /who alling some one can be difficult/irritating, especially if no one responds. I and many other people would find that annoying. There are way to many good people out there compared to the few idiots that do spam. I don't understand how typing /ignore (name) is so difficult.

Having a level requirement for a chat system would just harm the community.

since IP adresses are usualy randomly assigned per dial in with DSL etc. it would be alot of IPs to ban ... would also result in people from this ISP that get the random IP next will be autobanned ...

only if he has a static IP it will help ... and obviously he doesnt have one, since im sure he was IP banned already ;)

I like the idea of something being done with ooc. I think it would be good for some level limit on ooc, but this will cut out the newbies. This server needs to be alittle newbie friendly. I think an alt way would be to make ooc zone wide. This would make selling hard, but thats what EC and Freeport is for. It also may hurt getting group, but i believe classic was actually like that ... so why not give it a chance?

I suggest we put a throttle on the frequency of messages to any global channel (maybe 1-2 minutes? based on character? account? IP? Whatever works?), so that way if WallOfText appears, its only ONE wall every so often as opposed to whatever the channel/server spam limits are.

While we are inventing super duper secret awesome fixes, how bout this.

Anytime anyone level 1 or 2 uses OOC and has a "?" in the OOC it just deletes the OOC and they get a message saying "Go read the forums, your answer is there."

Or everyone can calm down and just realize that everything is fine.
