Seeing as big as the playerbase is for a private server I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in going red.. Sure it's got flaws and what not but it could also be fun.. Not sure if there was a post on this earlier I searched various topics and got nothing.

People who want to go red - just do it eh?

I mean, I keep hearing how hardcore PvP is in EQ (even though I thought it more readily resembled dysfunctional ballet), and yet you guys have to ask if a bunch want to go red like you're all afraid to dip your toe in first. Go red, they will come.

Or they won't, and you have your answer and an interesting story to tell your group mates.

Silence, Peon

""Then in 2001, one of the greatest social experiments in multiplayer gaming history went live. The Sullon Zek EverQuest PvP server was launched. The one rule on Sullon Zek was that there were no rules. The level restrictions on PvP combat were removed, training and corpse-camping became legitimate tools of war, and GM's took an entirely “Laissez affaires” attitude toward players grievances. Sullon Zek was to become one of the most ruthless, savage displays of antisocial humanity to ever exist in an online game, drawing the most competitive, committed players from the EverQuest community to a single battlefield.

Those playing on Sullon suffered incredible levels of torment and frustration, lost months worth of achievements in a matter of hours, and spent endless nights in combat against relentless and merciless foes. Yet speaking with players who fought and died on the fields of Sullon Zek, one finds their appreciation for the server, their sense of accomplishment about battles both won and lost, and their desire to return to be unanimous. As barbaric as Sullon Zek was, it was the greatest PvP server to yet exist in a multiplayer MMO.

Those players who were less skilled were quickly identified and shunned by groups. Players who found themselves without a group were at the mercy of both the enemy factions, and EverQuest's group-centric content. These players struggled, fell behind, and left the server. Even classes who could perform well solo would quickly discover that finding powerful armor and weapons required slaying monsters and completing quests which required groups. The end result was that Sullon Zek became a collection of some of the most experienced players the EverQuest community had to offer, those without the requisite skills or knowledge to be useful simply did not survive.

In addition, many of the creatures which dropped the most the most powerful items involved incredibly long and complicated fights, in which any interference from PvP combat would spell certain doom for the entire raid. This meant that every piece of PvE content on Sullon Zek was hotly contested, any attempt to kill a significant dragon or other monster would quickly become a battle of wills, over who had the requisite commitment and dedication to persevere through endless hours of exhaustion for the chance at a single piece of equipment.

The lack of governance on Sullon, combined with the brutal, relentless, and antisocial players it attracted, gave the server an intensity of experience which created the greatest PvP environment in the history of MMO's. The server offers a myriad of lessons for both developers and players alike. It shows that affording players the opportunity to inflict severe, meaningful loss and frustration on opposing players is one of the best ways to promote vicious, large scale PvP. Players will kill other players regardless of reward, as long as they are assured that their opponent has suffered a meaningful, life-draining defeat. Also in evidence with Sullon is that the type of players attracted to such a PvP environment tend to be utterly merciless. This gives rise to extreme rivalry's between players and factions, and makes the PvP combat even more meaningful. Combining such a battlefield with a PvE environment which is entirely non-instanced and “up-for-grabs” makes PvP and PvE nearly indistinguishable.

Nobody except noobs went red on real EQ servers back in 1999-2001.

Because, as in the above quote, a PvE environment which is entirely non-instanced and “up-for-grabs” makes PvP and PvE nearly indistinguishable.

My EQ1 guild from 2000 still exists (though we've long since left the game). We were based in GMT+10 (Australia) time zone, meaning we were the most hated raiding guild on the server because we stole the US guilds' spawns while they slept, and there was nothing they could do about it except try to stay up late and KS us.

In other games we've played on PvP servers, but there was no need in EQ1.

I tried getting people interested in turning red a few months back while waiting for kunark, there was no interest in it.

There is still no interest in it, except for the 5 guys that spam the server 100x a day trying to get their own red99 instead of just turning red. Some people just can't handle the competition when you're not allowed to train a whole zone and call it "pvp"

Hopefully one day there will be a red99, and aaaaaalllllll of this pvp bs goes away. /dreams

wrong! there is a big difference between fooling around on a blue server after handing in the book of discord and actually playing in a full red environment

i forsee at least 200 people at launchday of red p99 (if not more). blue population is just scared to lose numbers on blue p99, thats why they are against red

I would love to see a red99, making big assumptions but id bet a lot of the people that leave 99 for it are the trainers, troublemakers, ksers, and douchers. A lot of these hardcore pvpers seem like lowbrow clubswingers that can't come up with a solution to a problem other than destroy it.

someone would say thats a win win situation for both servers

more farming on blue, more drama on red FTFW!

I fully support a Red99 server. I would *love* to see one.
As a 'care-bear b00bie' (or whatever the VZ/TZ misanthropes call us) I would like to see one for no other reason that to mitigate the amount of PvP related threads shitting up server chat.

Lots of interest in red, the fact that Rogean would provide a legit server that won't have the fear of being wiped will bring a lot of people regardless of ruleset.

Look at the end game on this server. End game content is won by... whoever has no life whatsoever and can run to their character select screen in seconds to SLAY THE DRAGON!!! If some of you don't realize what it's like in the top guilds, let me tell you a couple things. This isn't like live where guilds are stable. The turnover rate is fast and thorough. In a three-month period, these guilds have turnover in excess of 75% of the members and it DOES NOT MATTER. Plug any group of shaved apes into the guild, grind out some planar armor for them and back to the poopsock until the new crop is burned out and quits.

On a PVP server, the skill of every single player matters. Everyone knows who's prepared, responsive and creative. Sullon Zek was the most intense gaming experience of my life. There were literally times I stood up from my keyboard and screamed in utter rage and frustration. That was in large part because I was too stubborn to reroll off the good team.

P99 is sort of fun, but it's also pretty dull. Honestly, how can you NOT succeed against this content? Even if you don't know it inside-out, hello, go read a spoiler? On the other hand, let's see you trivialize Nagafen with your zerg force while committed forces from both of the other teams are bringing you every mob in the zone, burning down your tanks and clerics and breaking all your CC. Your first PVP battle will leave you confused and angry. Later that night you'll think, "Hey, I should have tried this..." After your first kills, you'll find yourself thinking about who you're going to nail next.

How many of you would like to kill me? I know it's more than a few. And you better believe I'd like to personally slaughter each and every one of you. I can't wait to play on the P99 red server. Go-Go Good Team!

I'll never see nagafen because I won't sit in a zone and wait for a batphone text, completely refuse to play that joke of a design.

Macht, you realize that SZ was the rejects from the other zeks. Jinsuko or whatever his name was, went to SZ, started if not ran one of the larger guilds for the first 6 months (dunno what happened then, I quit around that time), and was well received there.

On Tallon, we all knew he sucked. By the time SZ came out, most of the better players were already done with EQ.

And I'm sick of you SZ failures, touting the "OMGZ WE COULD TRAIN AND RUSH!!! SO MUCH HARDER COREZ!" crap.

There were no CS rules on TZ. (CS being customer service, or PnP). Again, that server was just the rejects that were not good enough to stick around on the other zeks. I'm sure there were some quality players, but like I said, at that time the zeks were hemorrhaging players to RL, and nobody I knew that went to SZ was anything special.

Hell, even on these EMUs... guys that were shit quality then, are now hailed as some sort of dominate player. Its kinda funny, but kinda sad too.

Your perception seems off to me Envious. I'd imagine most of the people who didn't transfer from TZ would be people who invested too much time to bother, rather than rejects that couldnt hack the server haha. Only thing that was kinda shitty about TZ that could grief you was early Pandemonium cross team healing but eventually every guild turned that way.

I've jousted Tzuten kendrick and other rogues, on my rogue and never really noticed much of a front backstab advantage from them. The "skill" of EMU players you say sucked on live are because two things - a lot of people were young as fuck, I was 16 when EQ came out and I also couldn't dedicate the time to a top tier guild. I remember Telen being some unemployed fucken rich bastard who grinded aa's like 15 hoursa day in Velks with a bot ench/cleric for buffs. The "top" players on live played 10 hours a day and had a sick gear advantage ever since CN - PDM, if you think it was their sick jousting skills that are so much better than Xant or other emu players you said are sub par then I think you're way off.

Tuis? He was in KotWR before jumping to PDM lol....sad day.

I loved the PvP aspect of the game. Everyone talks about the negatives - the training, the corpse camping etc. But in the early days of TZ people respected each other so much so that we had "Player Written, Player Enforced" Play Nice Policies. It had nothing to do with being blue - it was just simple courtesy shit. Hey I killed you, I'll let you get yer corpse, you leave the zone for at least an hour.

There's no "challenge" in killing someone nekkid 20 times as they try to retrieve their corpse. Just like there is no challenge in bind rushing an oom wizard that just kicked yer ass and you KNOW he doesn't have the mana to do anything but gate.

NOT knowing is what made PvP exciting. You jumped into situations, whether it was in yer 20s ganking a group of darks at the treants in SK (which we lovingly called the ATM), or whether you were roaming around Kunark in the open lands in yer 50s on the prowl that pumped adrenaline and gave the game a challenge level you can not achieve fighting _a_random_mob_002.

That being said however - the PLAYER BASE is what will determine whether or not a Red99 succeeds or fails. No amount of server coding or GM intervention is going to be able to ensure a sense of "community" that makes people want to stay and progress thru the good and the bad.

I like the idea of global pvp, running around and killing people invading cities etc etc.

but when it comes to dungeon camps and raids I cant think of anything I would hate more than having to deal with pvp when you already have to kill 1 mob and 1 ph for 6 hours for a rare drop just to have someone come up and kill you.

Some people love it, I don't have the time to invest in a camp 2 or 3 times because someone brought some buddies to come take it from me or whatever.

Acillatem
04-03-2011, 01:36 PM
That's why you bring 2-3 of your buddies to help camp it heh. Sure was a lot more close-knit friendships on the Zeks becuz you were almost forced to travel in packs. None of this hundreds of MAG/NEC/DRU solo bullshit. Yeah you still had some - but nowhere near as bad as here.

While it may bring a totally different and far more intense raiding experience, EQ PvP has always been bullshit garbage because the game wasn't designed for it (Smedly said it himself). EQ classes are not and never have been balanced for PvP. If a Wizard wants you dead, guess what? You're going to die and there is really nothing you can do about it. Playing a Warrior, Rogue, or Monk in EverQuest PvP is akin to bringing grandma's station wagon to the Daytona 500.

While it may be funny to take someone's gear once you kill them, it was always an awful aspect of EQ PvP.

Only a noob would say such shit. People expecting everything balanced for 1v1's makes me want to puke. Rogues definitely suck cause they can't solo shadowknights - forget the fact that i'll drop the supposedly overpowered wizard fast as fuck with raid buffs in grp pvp.

Let me just add - in WOW yea balance may be an issue because you're playing 2's/3's/5's and set numbers in battlegrounds/raids - therefore if one class is less powerful than the next you get shafted and replaced by the better class. EQ has no number limits for raids or for contesting raids - some people, like myself enjoy playing a rogue for the challenge and fun style of the class, and being good at that class still makes you a valuable addition to a raiding guild/pvp grp.

Actually, wizards weren't very impressive until manaburn. Even as a crappy druid, I could sit and stare at a wizard nuking his brains out and heal myself until he went oom and then watch him fall over dead from winged death.

Necros, on the other hand... yeah. I used to fight shadowknights all the time. Most of them had better gear than me (good team, evil team, etc.), and usually they won, although I was a good enough player that "winning" usually meant I ran like hell away as my mana and hit points started dropping into danger zones. And you know what? It was fun as hell. One of my favorite SZ war stories is coming upon four SKs in Dawnshroud Peaks and opening up a rain spell on them (most low level evils sucked and could be killed easily) only to discover that ALL FOUR OF THEM had harm touch up. Needless to say... well, at least it was a short corpse run!

EQ PVP requires more skills and tricks than any other game I've played, especially if you're going to play one of the weaker classes. I don't expect to ever rival the gaming fun I had getting my ass kicked on Sullon Zek.

I don't know about that. I certainly feel the exact opposite - this server is so overpopulated* that access to anything worthwhile anywhere outside of late nights and mornings is usually hopeless. Everything is camped to ridiculous levels of waiting or contention, and a lot of zones are hopelessly stuffed. I often feel that the server would benefit from being split in two, and while I know it won't happen and would create problems of its own, dividing the playerbase just to lessen the content stress is something I would appreciate.

*or top-heavy, rather, as we don't have more players than a typical live server back then, but 75% of the players here are "hardcore", compared to the like 10% of a live server at the time.

Or just make a P99 Magicians & Necromancers mirror server...

Either way, the talent pool in SZ was low. Just as the EMU talent pool is low. Most of the better gamers are playing SC2, WoW, Rift, etc.

Everquest is not a PvP game. the classes are imbalanced, the terrain is designed for shady tactics and unfair ganks.
The only exception would be a Full grp vs Full grp, in an open battlegound.

Playing zek for 7 years, I didn't see one fair engagement, it was entirely ganking while leveling, or simply one class having more tools than another.

I disagree. Check out the class compliment on all EQ PVP servers that ever were. A Bard can best any non casting melee and most that do cast. He can infact, best a group of non casting melee without taking a hit unless someone uses a bow which for a Warrior is pretty useless. The ability to outrun, snare, root, charm, heal, debuff, mez, stun, fear, nuke, and dot are lord...no matter what "skills" you have. I played an Enchanter in PVP and I used Charmed PCs to attack guards etc. It did get more interesting when fighting casters or Hybrids like druids but stuns work very good as well as Charm and Mez. But it only took 1 slip up for a Wizard to nuke you down or to get a DOT landed on you.

It was all about catching people unawares which doesn't take skill. Those opportunities were always there. An Enchanter with a couple Melee DPS could do pretty well. Add a Cleric and much much better yet. A Wizard/Chanter duo is very tough if they see you coming. Harm Touches etc are a one shot and even rooted casters can be deadly. Pet classes work very well but pets can be rooted or mezzed easily then its open season on their owner. Not sure where all this Leet Skilz talk is all about. Its about Class, MR, Gear, Level and Opportunity>skill more times then not.

Eh, I agree EQ PvP isn't great, but this is wrong. Catching people unaware or off-guard is the essence of skill in PvP. Deception or recon is the essence of war between closely matched opponents.

Without deception or the ability to throw people off guard, it comes down to who has faster/stronger brute force. And that's definitely not skill.

Not that my opinion matters in any way but I felt like mentioning that I had a blast on sullon zek----for a while.

I created a druid (the first druid I had ever played) about a week after the server opened and it was some of the best fun I ever had in EQ. The fun lasted for a few months and then it went downhill for me.

My problem is that I was, and am, what I believe is now refered to as a "scrub". That is, I don't usually level really quickly and don't really have time for raiding on a regular basis. So after a while I had fallen too far behind the pack in levels and after a while longer the raid loot on other players was becoming much more common. I was out-leveled and out-geared and at that point I was just a moving target for other players.

Even then there was a certain amount of fun in playing the hide-and-seek survival game, feeling like a hunted animal just trying to stay alive. But you can only do that so long before the feeling that there is no future in it catches up to you.

So I would be interested in a classic PvP server but probably wouldn't play on it unless there some non-classic elements to it. Like a lower level cap maybe or removing raid content so the, as you all say, "poopsockers" wouldn't have such a ridiculous advantage.

Or maybe if item loot was a part of it and there was some mechanic to prevent people from bagging their gear if they know they are going to die (like no un-equiping items for x amount of time afer being attacked by another player). That would make people think twice about dumping high end equipment on low level twinks.

I'm sure someone will revile me with a variety of creative insults now. Whatver, this is just my opinion. PvP can be a lot of fun. Being a hunted animal in PvP can even be sort of fun. But knowing that you will always be the hunted animal with no hope of any other future sucks the fun out of it afte a while.

PVP is very nearly the antithesis of what EQ and multiplayer fantasy MMORPG is all about. Why create such a rich world when all of it becomes inconsequential in light of one antisocial sadist with a gleam in his eye? Why even play PVP in an environment that isn't designed for it?

I can't like it and can't understand the urge to do it, but that doesn't make me any less of a man. Comments like "man up and go red" would be laughable if they weren't so indicative of the a certain lack of maturity that is of course prevalent among the young but all too common in others.

How does getting attacked by an "antisocial sadist" cause the design to become inconsequential? I would argue the game becomes bland and the wonder diminishes when the winners are those who can more effectively eliminate competition through use of the /petition command as opposed to in-game ability. Survival of the fittest? Ha.

How does PvP detract from the imagination and wonder of the world? You speak of challenge but you argue for less challenge. You call it brutal and insensitive; I call it real and competitive, and I rejoice in the ability to decide my own fate instead of being confined within an arbitrary set of rules that remove the challenge and competitiveness of the game. Win or lose, my fate is decided by my own ability.

Seriously though... Skill can be many things.

-Knowing when to pick fights or to run from fights
-Knowing who to pick fights with
-Knowledge of your own abilities and how they interact with other players in a given situation
-Your ability to quickly determine which ability to use.
-Positional awareness
-Knowledge and use of game mechanics
-Preparedness (gear sets, pots, pumice, buffs and buffslot readiness)
-Gear

I think adding the element of PvP greatly enhances the experience of EverQuest in many ways, for example;

Simple camps become exciting because of the unpredictable nature of what you may have to face. You can go deep into enemy territory where the penalty of dying can be harsh.

Being able to quickly mobilize a raidforce to take down big targets before your opponents have the chance to organize a counter-force to stop you.

Rivalry that builds up between players and guilds.

One line of rebuttal to my commentary would be to tell me to lighten up, because it's just a game. So it is, but I enjoy games of imagination, wonder and challenge, not games of brutality and insensitivity.

PvP does not retract from the games imagination, wonder or challenge (My opinion is that it greatly enhances the challenge). But yes I will give you that it attracts a certain kind of people, generally speaking more competitive people along with the behavior that normally comes with that crowd.

I'd be the first to concede the point that the PvE community is larger then the PvP one, and I don't think a Red version of p99 will ever be as popular as the original. That being said the track record for PvP servers haven't been that bad, and none of them have even come close to the quality of the code here on p99.

In short; I enjoy PvP-servers, and I'm perfectly fine with that you don't.

The one thing that is clear is that the two worlds and the two different types of people don't mix very well. Wait... that was kind of my point wasn't it?

I disagree. I believe the two must mix to create the best gaming environment. A strict PvP MMO becomes bland and old quickly. PvP needs PvE to survive, otherwise you're left with an FPS. There's a reason the PvP servers that let you summon gear and fight in the starting zones never lasted for more than a week.

In a game like Everquest, the addition of PvP adds new dynamics to the game that makes it an ever-changing and evolving game. One such dynamic is the importance of alliances and guild politics. Because of the current ruleset, one can be the biggest douche and achieve the same success as the rest.

Some of my best memories of live were on Rallos and watching guild dramas and wars unfold - then how chaotic everything became when a 3rd party enemy to both guilds appeared. Alliances were made and zones turned into warzones at times when highly contested bosses were spawned. This is something that simply can't be replicated on a PvE server. On p99 you can't even fight over bosses by trying to out dps the opposing guilds. You are simply left to the whims of the staff and their interpretation of a set of rules that is uncompetitive and caters to the gutless.
