Have not played on the server in a long time and wanted to make a SK alt for~
- fun
- quests
- messing around
I (have a 52 monk and assorted lvl 40s classes collecting dust). I have a rogue I started as well which is a lot of fun. Currently still stuck on choice of Race. I played a troll SK all through live even doing Greenmist so I love the weapon even if it was obsolete at the time. Currently leaning toward Erudite for the unique experience (never had a erudite) or Iksar for greenmist+regen+AC. Not sure how much I will miss slam with a 2h? Will be twinking fairly heavily, Fungi tunic and Exquesite velium brawl stick/mace of lost souls and ardu shield with the other assorted 500-2k plat stuff.
edit- left off human (kinda redundant I feel with Eurdite), DE (not really interested its so common)

Normally I go for iksar-anything but seeing as how you have a large assortment of alts and the goal of this character is to mess around i voted Erudite to break the mold. Its fun to try something different and their fashion is #1 (get visible set of steelsilk) and you'll have a character you can play for fun even after you've played every other class to death.

I was like this with my paladin. Was great FQ until I got rid of the steelsilk and the bugged Velious helm killed it for me when I tried to upgrade gear.
Iksar all day IMO. Regen, AC, Greenmist, but most importantly I think they win velious FQ.

For fun factor, I would say Iksar or Bertoxx Human.

There’s a thread on it. Basically no graphic and bugged custom look too. At work right now so can’t link all the different threads. That’s the bad thing about steelsilk. Looks so good when you finally want to upgrade you look shitty. There’s a few exceptions but Iksars/humans look way more badass in plate IMO.

Yes but doesn't the velious quest armor still look good? I'm not sure the colors on the sk versions armor, purple for ss.. what about thurg and kael?

Thurgadin is default color, silvery on Humans. Kael set is a fairly bright red. Plane of Growth set uses the alternate plate (scale) graphic in its default color and looks gold on Humans.

I voted Ogre. Slap 5 points in agi, rest into int.
Slam. I still smile every time I stop a cast, anything from a heal, debuff or a nuke
Frontal Stun is huge for tanks and casting
And with the amount you are twinking, a few 10 dose Ant potions should not make or break anything for those zones that "require" it like highkeep, mistmoore, etc will be a breeze.

Thanks, so why would that not look good on a erudite? I am curious because I planned on making a erudite. I understand the custom velious helm is crap and most other helms have no graphic, but I can live with that.

The equipment should be fine. A friend played a female Erudite Paladin and the Thurgadin armor looked fine on it. Just don't turn in the custom helms. With no helm graphic you'll have the regular hood over your head like usual but that's not a problem. The tinted sets (Kael and Skyshrine) might have a somewhat different final hue because of the different base color of the Erudite velious plate compared to Human.
---------------------------------------------------
As for Shadow Knight races, in essence you have the experience-penalized races being the long-haul min-max choices, and the non-penalized races being there for folks who want a different look or maybe some additional convenience. Ogre/Troll/Iksar are all good with their own advantages, and any of them are better in the min-max sense than any of the other three--although players have a tendency to overstate the impact of race. Erudite/Dark Elf/Human likewise play so similarly as to be nearly interchangeable. Erudites and Humans, in particular, are almost identical in play. Dark Elves feel a little different due to having stronger (more resolutely evil-leaning) faction than the near-neutral Humans and Erudites. In the end all six will do all the same jobs, so don't feel as though you "must" pick one for some specific racial benefit. My own Shadow Knight is a Human. It's been 60 for more than 6 years and I remain well-satisfied with it. The Erudite will give you perfectly decent service if that's what you like.

Thanks for all the responses! going to fool around a little bit with erudite. I'm really intrigued with the idea of not being Kos in some of these good cities.
It's funny that shadowknight is a really tough choice when it comes to race when all my other classes it was pretty easy picking something I wanted

With Erud you trade 5 useless disease resist for 5 awesome magic resist too!
Don't forget to get your ago to 75+... I also find weapon skills accrue much faster with 75+ dex, though I'm not sure if that is just me being crazy!

I'd only go with troll, ogre, or iksar. Plan to solo/duo a lot, take iksar or troll, plan to group a lot, take ogre(frontal stun is really quite useful when splitting mobs with FD).

Depends on who you are "trading with":
Str+stam+ int = 337 for ogre, 262 for erudites. I'd honestly give stamina a 150% modifier in usefulness, making the difference even more stark before even touching on slam or FSI.

Ogres have pretty OP stats, but I can't make myself play one. Ugly AF and you have to pay a fat tax in dungeons for eternity (shrink pots) unless you enjoy getting stuck/not being able to cast in a ton of places.

Consider only sta/int, 90% of our gear has +str, if you don't cap str even on the weakest race at high lvl you have some issue...

The point I was making was in reference to the comparisons and contrasts between dark elves and erudites. Though you're not wrong about overall ogre awesomeness.

If you ignore str, ogres get 197 vs erudite 192... Through sta is more important in my book...
High str definitely helps a lot to level and when undergeared... Later it's just a waste of stat points...

And even if he does start getting high end equipment, that excess strength by that point will be about as useful as all that extra erudite int you started with. Str x 0.50, stam x 1.5, int x 0.25 end game. Prior to end game more like str x 1.0, stamina x 1.5, int x 0.50.
elwing

I truly agree with str x 0.5...but over 255 str =0...and even as a weak race you should be at 255...

And like I said, by the time you get all that gear where your base strength becomes irrelevant your staring int becomes similarly irrelevant.
elwing
03-16-2019, 11:48 AM
Not strictly true... Sta and int are hard to cap, str is trivial, I'd be happy to trade 20str for 10int or 5sta now...
Who cares about capping int? Someone who flunked SK school. If having a bigger mana pool increased your mana regen I could sorta see how it still be somewhat useful. But it doesn't. SKs don't mana dump.

All Hail the Queen of Darkness (I only have 201 str unbuffed)
You mean you didn't get all BiS the moment you hit your upper 50s? No wai.

Yea, the idea you will always easily stumble into max Str unbuffed by accident on weak races is kinda nonsense. Even in fairly good gear you might not make it.

I don't even have a single Skyshrine armor and I am at 224 as a human... The mandatory fos cap me by many points already...
Edit: that's counting steal strength... I always use it, cost nothing and a debuff can't hurt...

Id say Ogre but only for one reason.....
I think SK epic is one of the coolest looking weapons in the game, and ogre's have the biggest model thus making their sword even bigger... so the bigger you can make your SK epic the better

Ogres
Biggest model so their gear is big and looks cool
Nice stats
Frontal Stunt Resist
Scratches butt frequently
Can block doorways in tight dungeons so people can't leapfrog you
Cute kinda like how a bulldog is cute

I just re-rolled my 33 ERU to an ogre, mostly for something new to do.
Additionally, my theorycrafting is that FSI is most important for SK's. If you have to split spawns bash interrupts are likely since it seems that is the first attack most npc's throw. Likewise reverse kiting if fear breaks slightly before you finish casting a refresh they are likely to attempt another bash since it's recycled while they were feared. Plus of course slam and all the stats.
"Most important for sks" I mean...
* Shams can slow and put the bash timer into the stratosphere.
* Warriors don't cast and even a momentary front physical stun isn't consequential.
My ogre is lvl 10 and really enjoying slam again. Plus of course getting murdered by willowisps :)

I agree on FSI, it's probably the best sk perk... But I am convinced that it's not life changing in any way...

If your class can go Ogre, go Ogre.
Only excuse against this is looks. And even there you have poor tastes. /burp

As a 60 Ogre SK, IMHO FSI is overrated. It's really Frontal Bash Stun Component Immunity. You can still get stunned (and interrupted) from the front from other sources, even bash if you get pushed.

I main a 60 ogre war and my current alt flavour of the month is a Troll SK. Trolls are the classic SK race imo. Though I do sympathize with the Bertoxx sk guild, it owns.

If it were me I would really only consider troll or ogre. More important possibly than any other aspect is the ability to slam/bash with any 2hander in game. The min/max is obviously ogre. FSI is generally overrated but the dynamic between FSI and feign death is too critically important to risk understatement.
For me personally I’d still be sorely tempted to go troll for fashionquest purposes (and a head nod to passive regen) but fatty ogre SKs are cool enough looking in their own right.
I wouldn’t personally go erudite human or iksar for lack of slam. Without going big you’re locked out of key interrupting capability unless using a shield or specifically the epic. There are some strong endgame 2handers out there ... but even ignoring those most sks will never see epic unless they commit to raiding. Raiding on p99 is not for everyone.

My first SK was a troll male. Looks great in red and black with custom helm.
Newest is erudite female. Flayed skin pretty good. Pretty fearful in pink.

I played an ERU SHD to 62 back in the day. I joked i was a Necromancer with a Sword. Erudites get a huge mana pool compared to other races.
Deadeye has a permanent place on your spell list, just like Humans. I'd have made one again here but couldn't split my points how I wanted (some weird UI bug)
