Worst death loops? Tales from the crypt

Sup guys! Has anyone bound themselves an in iffy spot and then paid the ultimate price with a death loop? Perhaps paired with being too inebriated or sleep-deprived?

I'm someone that is super-paranoid about bind locations, death loops, going LD, etc.

Not a death loop per say, but I have unintentionally shut down Blackburrow as a young half-elf warrior.

Tried to rally a group to slay Varsoon, a human necro w/pet. We wiped and some of us trained him to Blackburrow. Once inside, we caused/had a train on the other side of the zoneline as well. Zoned it but Varsoon and his gang of skeletons were still on the other side and agro'd/killed anyone passing through or trying to retreive their corpses.

This was <1 year into live, so I don't think we had (or knew of) /corpse for dragging.

Many an elf and barbarian life was lost that day.

I death looped outside ToV one drunken repop Saturday night.

Fun times. Thanks to whoever petitioned the GMs to get me logged out.

I only had to do about half of 59 over again.

In classic I death looped in some scarab/beetle room during a raid i went on to fight naggy, I was a level 30-40 druid (my friend said I could come), I bound in what I thought was a safe room but it had already been cleared by the raid force ahead of me, I never even got to see the dragon before I got agro from something and died, and then death looped in that room until a GM saved me. I was very young at the time and it was probably the first time I felt true, soul crushing loss and desperation, fun times!

Hah, that's a great tale ineubis! Varsoon came up recently in a thread about npcs ruining your day. Trains on both sides of a zoneline sounds hilarious, esp that early in live.

And glad that someone petitioned for you Kjs, that sounds like a nightmare

Not a death loop per say

In keeping with the other post about grammar and werds, I'd just like to mention that it is actually 'per se', a Latin phrase meaning "by itself" or "in itself". Totally understandable why people think it's per say, I did too until I found out.

And yeah, Varsoon used to scare me spitless as a young ranger on live.

I seem to remember my first time going in plane of fear in the old days somewhere around 2000. I had a cleric around level 47. There was about 50-60 people sitting at the portal ready to go in and do some raiding.

They had what they called "rabbits" if I remember it right it was bards, monks, sk's anyone that could run fast or feign death or just volunteered for suicide duty and they would try to train the npc's away from the zone-in spot.

So after the rabbits went in, they told everybody to go inside and upon entering fear they said turn left and run to the corner, die or camp at this "CC" (corpse corner) and they told the clerics to bind there because they said it was 'safe'.

It wasn't safe. So 5 mins after everyone was dead or feigned they told the clerics to start logging back in their bind spots in the corpse corner. Well, there was mobs that would randomly roam towards the corner and of course they aggro 2 miles away. And thus began a long series of making big piles of naked poofing corpses over and over and lost a couple levels and I had to wait for days for one of the big guilds to actually break and clear it out. It was pretty miserable not being able to play my only character for that long.

But after that, nobody ever tried to break fear using the CC again (they kept saying they changed the pathing or some such shit) so from then on, people ran to the North Wall and bind and camped out and it worked better.

Had a similar situation when they put that beastlord(berserker?) Epic mob in PoFear that had a named sprite spawn randomly while killing sprites. He spawned within aggro distance of the portal during the break-in.

We weren't ready for him. His aoe mezz killed the break-in party. We called our ally guild for help. They died. We called in the 2nd tier guilds. They all charged in like they normally would for a fear break. Died. Finally the big dogs were called in. The first bunch died and were Pissed. At us. Heh. They finally formalized a raid to save the server from this fear fiasco. I think after 6 hours we finally got our corpses back. It was a frustrating rush of a night. We didn't do west wall breaks after that.

in 2017 i death looped outside tov in WL for an entire night. went from full 60 to 1/3 into 55. When I logged on the next day there was only 1 rezzable corpse and my clothed corpse. The rest of the corpses were buried by GM's probably because they were causing enormous amounts of lag.

tl;dr 100% 60 to 33 % 55

Back in classic, our guild had a couple of groups doing paw or something one night and as a Druid I was giving rides n things. I think I bound there so I could port out and go do something and come right back. Did that. Later that night I was just hanging out in paw buffing friends and dozed off. Died without having rebound and went into a loop. By morning lost 5-6 levels overnight felt like i was 42 and went back to 36.

I saw someone caught in a death loop in FV yesterday. He was bound right next to the guards, his clothes corpse just down the dock. Weird he was a wood elf, he probably messed up his faction without realizing

I would have petitioned but I didn’t think of it at the time! I wonder if he’s still there?

I have epilepsy and one of the meds I was on made me super sleepy. Think I fell asleep at keyboard then went to bed without thinking to log. Playing red99 when xp loss was still a thing, someone (lulzsect?) camped my bindpoint and I went from like level 52 down to 46 or something. Think eventually a GM logged my char out lol.

From what I was told Aftermath tried to pull some mini's to zone in after all the bosses has been cleared and ended up training the entrance (just my luck). It deathlooped from max 60 all the way down to like 47 or some shit before a GM had gotten the petition and booted me out of game. Luckily some of the corpses still had rez timers but they were literally in the process of rotting exp timers as I was logging in. I promptly logged out and messaged in guild discord I needed a cleric to help me out ASAP.

What followed was the most epic 3 cleric chain rez triangle I have ever seen. They managed to get me back up to 55 before we ran out of corpses. I wager about a whole level of deaths expired during the rez chain. I petitioned to see if they could restore the lost exp but they don't do that anymore. I was really hoping they would since it was such a large amount of exp and not like I died once because of a lag spike or something.

To this day I'm still not back to 60. Not even back to 59 yet. This death loop really hurt because I really cannot play the amount of hours like I used to with my new assignment so I don't know how long it could be before I make it back to 60. On the brighter side I'm one of the best geared sub-59 rogues on the server :)

Tofat WAS 60, now hes 53. This death loop happened months ago. That one still seems the most epic after reading this thread. I think he made it down to 51 or 52 after the deleveling and rezzes

Yeah that is brutal, mine happened in spring and I spent the summer casually soloing to 60 in HS and solb. It took me about 3 or 4 months to get 60 again.

The reason mine happened was, I was spinning at character select in WL and my cat (who loves walking on my keyboard) stepped on the numlock enter key.

Back on Live, I played on Nameless Server. A Shaman in LoS by the name of Mudcrush , played with his roommate Jojoba quite often, but apparently the 2 got into some weird inner roomate homo spat one day and.....

Apparently while Mudcrush was at work, Jojoba decided it would be clever to bind Mudcrush at the top of the Dreadland Spires while levitated, shortly after clicking levitate off and sitting back eating his Cheetos and watching months of work unwind before his (And the entire servers) ....eyes

no the gms did not restore his experience lol. I think he got home from work around level 17.

Mudcrush was kinda a dickhead though ....But no more than the average egomaniac hardcore over weight Cheeto lovin neck beard back then.

Not really a death loop but to cheese my shaman epic I killed myself probably a hundred times in NFP to corpse gems from the very first quest. I got clicked every time to port back, but I have a screenshot somewhere othe area in front of nfp bank just covered with my corpses.

Mine was on live, months after launch:

I was on my dark elf necromancer, my most powerful alter ego.

I was exploring the Karanas, a new area to my evil eyes.

I followed the walls because I was good at this game :D

Then I thought "I should bind, I'm so far into these planes and have no clue where I am", so I opened the spell book and bound.

Then I look over the hill squinting my eyes and am like, "hey look!" (My friend was at my house after school that day) A magic tree look how scary that thing looks! Its got RED EYES! wow!!!"

"Hmm is it moving towards me??"

"IT IS RUN!"

I hear that terrifying fire spell sound and BOOM dead. 1 shot.

Sad, oh well... I'm out here having fun so no biggie. I expected a death that's why I bound!

What I didn't realize is, that I ran, back onto the same spot where I just bound.

Suddenly I spawn..

I hear that fire spell sound....

BOOM DEAD.....

Like the kind of dead where you slide as you load.

OH NO!" we shouted. "WHAT DO!?"

It happened like 5 times until we invented the idea (between the two of us) and pulled the plug.

Now in 1999 5 deaths in a row was like basically deleting your character. Nobody could imagine such exp loss!

Stopped playing on Tribunal Live a few months after the release of Luclin. Years later logged in on druid and hit gate. Was bound near bank in Firiona Vie. Yeah when did the faction change happen? Luckily was able to run away to a safe spot after a few deaths get my spells loaded and go fetch my corpse.

Had a friend (new to EQ) start playing with me back in 2012ish

Took him to befallen in his mid 20's - he fell asleep while in a fireplace group and we wiped. After 30 mins one of the group who has left lets us know he was bound by the lake and was getting killed repeatedly.

Ended up guarding his corpse at the lake for an hour at 2am with a petition submitted. He eventually woke up and /q the game for 6 months.

Eqmac raiding plane of fear with my druid bound in the middle of the zone as it was cleared to port some people out who had to leave raid.

Come back to raid and we finished clearing fear. Port everyone out and log out in free port forgetting to rebind.

Next day log in on my druid and gate thinking i was going to qeynos to continue working on some lower level quests.

Arrive back in plane of fear fully spawned. All i see if all kinds of mobs around me and a lot more rushing at my poor druid. needless to say i died and spawn back again.

I died 7 times before i remember to pull the plug on my PC.

it was a saturday and finaly a few hours later a GM was able to clear fear mobs around my bodies and rez me back up. so i could port my self and rebind hell out of plane of fear.

Not on P99. But back in 2001 on the Tribunal server I was in a guild called "Eternal Hero's". It was a Friday night and we were doing a Kael raid. We killed a lot of giants and got some decent drops. It was a fun night. So Here I was (55 Druid) porting guildies out after the raid. There were more peeps needing ports so I bound myself where I stood so I could port a group out and then gate back to get another group.

See where this is going?

It was late so after the last group was ported out I just camped in WC and went to bed. So I head out to Burning Woods Saturday night to quad kite hornets. Things were going well and I was tossing back a few beers. Ok I was drunk and stupid, I admit it. So of course I make a mistake and die. I had totally forgot about where I had bound last so my naked self pops in a room full of fully popped giants. Needless to say I die in about 5 seconds. Then I re-pop and die in 5 seconds. And again and again and again.

I'm drunk so I am not thinking clearly and my dumb a$$ keeps trying to run out of the room (which is pointless with no sow). After about twenty corpses piled up I started asking for help in guild chat. That's when someone from my guild who wasn't drunk and stupid like me told me to shut off my computer and log on an alt. So I did and that finally stopped the death loop. I don't know exactly how many times I died in that loop but corpses were piled up like crazy. Maybe 30 or more.

Then a guildie came to my rescue. He logged in his 60 Monk and trained the whole room to a hallway where he would FD while I logged in, memorized ring of commons and ported myself out of there. Then I bound in WC and thanked him a hundred times for getting me out of there. But he wasn't done being my savoir because he then dragged all my corpses somewhere safe and logged in his epic cleric to rez each and every corpse. He even came to BW to rez the original corpse with all my gear.

I thanked him a thousand times and offered him 5K pp for all that work but he refused to take it. He did however make sure to tease me about for the remainder of my time playing on EQ live. But I deserved it, LOL.

My first death loop was as a druid in Qeynos Hills, bound by the tower and got looped by Tovax which the guards would not help kill.
Also got stuck in Emerald Jungle later when I thought I had picked a safe spot and it was not.
Lately on the other emulator server that is +3 years, I got stuck with my brand new level 1 that kept getting ganked by the Orc Centurion walking by in GFay and quit out to never play again.

I haven't deathlooped myself, but I remember a guildie during Luclin back on live deathlooped in Shadowhaven. He went from 60 down to like 25 after dying all night. He bound at the shadowhaven bank but a little too close to the edge of the pool. Would respawn and fall into the water and drown over and over.

I played a wizard and bound outside Sebilis, and fell asleep in a chef group and woke up to my naked wizard at the orb with 10+ bodies next to me from that one roaming froglok.

GMs gave me my corpse back but not my exp, went from 57? to 52 and was devastated. I never hit 60 until Velious, but had my epic.
