View Full Version : No Sound or Music

As of this morning I have been unable to hear any sound or music from the game. I double checked the Options both in the Main Menu and in the OptionsEditor.exe, I double checked that Sound=True in the eqclinent.ini, I restarted multiple times, I tried a fresh install, and I made sure my drivers were up to date all to no avail.

When I open the Volume Mixer for Windows, I see the game as "Name Not Available" and the green bar is moving up and down like there should be sound playing, but nothing comes out of the speakers.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and come up with a fix, or have any idea what could be causing the problem?

Thanks

Update: Tried WinEQ2 now, and still no luck. Out of ideas.

Which volume mixer are you using? The windows one? Try downloading one that is recommended by the team. I use the one here:

So I was just using the Windows one. I downloaded VirtualMidiSynth. I got some music back while in game, like the general atmosphere music.

No loading screen music and strangely enough no combat music. Sound effects like monster noises, bag opening noises, etc. are still completely absent.

Did you add the loading music and combat music to your EQ folder like the set up guide states?

Reinstalled and I’m good. OPi recommend reinstalling. I found a video on YouTube that makes installing roughly 10-15 min

Pro tip: Once you have a known good install, make a copy of it. Any problems, back up your screenshots and log files and delete everything and copy it over, then apply latest p99 patch and done.

Apparently I didn't delete them, but that did bring back the loading screen and combat music. Still no other sound effects though.

Just to give it a shot, I tried a reinstall using the file in the youtube description. Still the exact same issue, I get music but no sound effects.

I am in a similar position. At some point in the last week all my sounds have stopped working. I read this thread and completely re-installed the game but that hasn't made any difference. My computer's setup is fine and all other apps, music and Day Break EQ produce all the sounds I would expect. Did something happen with the v52 patch? Anyone got any ideas?

Hello Deathrydar. I had gone right back to basics as was simply using the default install and my MSI laptop's inbuilt speakers. I am yappy to report I have found the issue though. It was in the Windows volume mixer. Where previously Everquest was shown it had been replaced with "No name" and was muted. Un-muting this has restored the sound.

I wish I had some advice to give ya, my friend. Unfortunately, I have no idea. The sound comes from your device (computer) so there is something hosed with that. The midis (the music) comes from a virtual synthesizer so the fact that the midis are working and the basic sound is not, has me perplexed.

Sorry!!

Latest patch has also broken p99 sounds for me. Everything else on my laptop plays fine but no EQ sounds work, and EQ doesn't even show up on the mixer bar. I tried a full fresh install from the video linked here and no luck

Yeah, I'm completely stumped. I've even tried other private servers to test and the sound works completely fine there. It just seems to be P99 where it disappears like that.

My sound stopped before and it was because I unknowingly stopped the service in MSCONFIG for my virtual sound synthesizer. I thought that this was due to a patch as well, as I had just modified my MSCONFIG options prior to installing the latest patch, but it wasn't....it was something that I have changed.

I do not know everything about Project 1999 and how they patch things, but I do know that their patches do not mess with the sound. So I think wherever you are looking for the problem may be the wrong place. Maybe think outside of the box?

Try looking at the Windows Volume mixer. I hadn't touched this yet somehow EverQuest became muted. Simply right click on the speaker icon (normally on the right hand side of your task bar) and select "Open Volume Mixer". In that menu scroll across to the right and see if you too have an item listed as "Name not available". If you do, un-mute it and see if that works for you too.

Yeah, I've unfortunately tried that. It definitely isn't muted and the Mixer actually shows the bar moving up and down like it is registering sound, but nothing comes out.

Alright, I FINALLY solved the sound issue! Just in case anyone else similar issues, here is what did it in the end.

I downloaded a program called Codec Tweak Tool. Within the program you can click Fixes, and there is an option to "Reset Windows Audio Mixer volume settings for all applications". This solved the issue and got sound back for me. Why? I'm not sure, but at least it worked.

I checked my MSconfig services and I don't have anything called virtual sound synthesizer. I did check any service that looked sound related and they were all running, and I haven't personally changed any settings there ever. IDK enough about computers to think outside the box, all I know is my sounds worked fine prior to the patch and now they do not. Sound works as normal for everything not p99.

Try looking at the Windows Volume mixer. I hadn't touched this yet somehow EverQuest became muted. I'm sure this is related to my problem, but when I open the volume mixer there isn't anything listed for Everquest, p99, or anything called "name not available". The only things that show up are "Device", "System Sounds", and "Mozilla Firefox". I've tried experimenting with different settings including restoring the defaults, and also updated to the latest driver but nothing has worked.

Any ideas would really be appreciated, this sucks =(

I have the exact same issue, I have music, but no game sound.

I downloaded a EQ Titanium client that was linked in the Youtube video earlier, and had no luck. Tried one based from the 5 disc .ISO's and still nothing.

Checked Client.ini Sound=True
Downloaded new snd2/6/8 files just to see if those would help (From the Make EQ Sound Significantly Better thread).
Checked Sound mixer
Created different game shortcuts (using both the Launch Titanium batch file from the P1999 patch files, and the eqgame.exe -patchme shortcut, run as admin.

still no game sounds, just music.

The CodecTweaker that the guy shared work for me as well, recommend that fix. Make sure you do it when the game isnt running. It might have also been just me closing out of like every other program on my computer (discord included) but who knows.

Using the bassmididrv from this post fix my issue.

https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81207

Download and install bassmididrv from the following link. http://p99.yourfirefly.com/

Next download the 1mgm.sf2 file. http://p99.yourfirefly.com/1mgm.sf2

Install BassMidiDrv. Launch it and then under SoundFonts (Port A) add the 1mgm.sf2 file FIRST then add the
synthusr.sf2 (not synthusr2.sf2) from your Everquest folder SECOND.

Do the same thing for SoundFonts (Port B)

Finally go to the Advanced Tab and select SoundFonts (Port A) and press Apply.

Im getting no sound as well but the issue seems to on Blue only for me. When I log in to Green or Red with the same client the sound is there without any changes.

There must be some key to disable audio or something because everything should be good to go unless some BS Windows patch did it.

So I too lost all sound suddenly a few days ago and have been unable to troubleshoot it myself. I want to try this, "Codec Tweak Tool." Is the following the correct link to the app you used?

I hate to necro an old thread, but I'm having this issue as well. I'm using a laptop with Win7 on it. I get music on the loading screens, and the character selection screen, but no sound in game. CodeTweakTool didn't help. Re-install didn't help. Different MIDI drivers (tried BassMidiDrv and VirtualMidiSynth) didn't help the problem, thought he music sounds much better. Volume mixer isn't a problem for me as it shows up correct.

Just no sounds.

For me the fix on Windows 11 was system > sound > volume mixer > "reset sound devices and volumes for all apps to the recommended defaults"

Now, under apps, I see not only "system sounds" but also "everquest" and my game sound works again.
