Games these days use micro-transactions, loot boxes, pay walls, and engage in all sorts of predatory practices to exploit their player bases. Unfortunately, that's becoming the norm in games these days and players don't get exposed very often to games without those things. You don't have to worry about those playing this.

Besides heat and sub services, UO and Spellbinder: The nexus conflict (fun game) this was one of the only sub games yet

Imagine 20+ years ago they got it right but in present day they can't seem to get it right.

I think 20+ years ago you had people with experience playing MUDs, like Dungeons & Dragons, making MMORPGs. Now, you have business people trying to monetize every tiny thing in games and not concentrating on the player experience and MUDs/MMORPGs are dependent on that experience. From the Wiki on MUDs (I'm sure most of us know this already, but for those that don't):

----------
Games such as Meridian 59, EverQuest, Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot were routinely called graphical MUDs in their earlier years.RuneScape was actually originally intended to be a text-based MUD, but graphics were added very early in development. However, with the increase in computing power and Internet connectivity during the late nineties, and the shift of online gaming to the mass market, the term "graphical MUD" fell out of favor, being replaced by MMORPG, Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, a term coined by Richard Garriott in 1997.

I mean... yeah... except you had to buy expansions every 8~ months and pay 15$ per month for a sub.

Complimenting an emu server which by law needs to be unmonetized for this doesn't mean anything. Instead give thanks to the staff, the donors and Daybreak for allowing it to exist unmolested.
