View Full Version : A Teal of two servers

At first it seemed like a god send when the admin team said they where watching and felt way too many folks where on green and we need another server to space out the fun.
So, my wife and I headed over to Teal to avoid the crowd. But now upon looking back it seems there is still a good number of folks on Green and not so much on Teal.
We are looking for a guild and groups, like everyone else, and fear Teal just isn't the best place to find what we want. What do you all think about this?
Thanks!
I think it'll all come out in the wash. Give it some time to equilibrate.

The poll here was like 50/50 on moving, but I don't think most people ocme here and there are still people asking "whats up with teal?" in OOC and on reddit, so I don't think the message got out to everyone equally.

Give it time. There are a lot of people on the fence, as are some guilds. Once full guilds start moving over things will pick up on Teal. Once players start to question why they can't do anything with their time, they will transfer. Once the players that left already due to frustration hear there is a new server, they will come over.
All in due time. It hasn't even been 24 hours yet and they already had a pretty good population for the classic era. Last night Teal peaked at 712 players. It'll be fine!

The first few hours set the tone for the rest of the server's future and in teal's first few hours it became "the low-pop server"
It will probably remain a 75%/25% split until they merge

It'll even out some more. I doubt teal will ever has as many as green, partly inertia will keep green bigger and partly some people prefer the busier server and partly because once the two pops are fairly close there will be nearly no benefit to switching so why bother moving to finish evening it out anyways?
But it'll maybe be more like 60/40 in another week or 10 days as the /move command window is wrapping up.
What really needs to happen is people need to stop soloing camps with their stronger than classic pets. It's a world of hurt in the 20s when pet classes are trying to use green/grey pets to get exp and no tanks are around because they refused to group with them. Kinda funny really. Now you see lvl 28 casters paying 10-20p per word hoping to research their pet. I told 1 guy i'd give him my 5 words if he gave me a rubi-bp. That didn't go over well. =)

Time will tell. Green's population feels exactly right since teal opened. It's easy to find groups, but there are more spawns available than there used to be.
It seems this all might have been solved by simply leaving spawn times at 80% reduction instead of nerfing it to 60% then opening another server.

I sorta liked pre-split Green for that classic overcrowded Fennin Ro feel.

That only applies to the level 5 and under mobs. Wouldn't help at all with the overcrowding issue in dungeons happening now and only going to get worse as more people get in range of Lower Guk and Sol B.

If the population stays as it is you are much better on teal than you are on green as far as leveling up easily. That will probably change and it will be pretty even by the end of the 2 weeks.

There are over 450 people on right now during the day. If all you care about is being able to level up easy and have camps open all you need is like 200-300 people during classic. Once you are in your 40's there are only 2 good dungeons to level in. You could fill up the best solb and lguk camps with 24 people.

I guess thriving is different to different people. There are probably 600+ on teal during prime time? I haven't seen it because I just logged in this morning for the first time. That is thriving to me during classic. I normally play pvp servers, there just aren't any good ones open right now. Anything over 100 real players on a classic server is fun for me.
I consider 200-300+ thriving.

There's two weeks for being able to use /move, and it's been up...a day I think? Maybe two? There are many people who don't know what Teal is yet, or haven't had a chance to log in since it opened. Green will probably still have more when everything settles, but it'll only get more balanced in the next two weeks.

I can tell you teal was good yesterday and so far today.I made a wiz gnome and area around druid ring in steamfont just have enough people even some high elf came. Not too busy to fight for mobs but just enough to use your time efficiently. Just hit level 4.Big difference with gfay on green when I started and u had to look all over to find mobs to kill because there was so many people.

People continuously error by taking the population of what they are used to on Blue and attributing it to Teal and Green.
Blue has an additional TWO HUGE continents so there is plenty of room and content for everyone. Classic has three continents, but really only two because there is nothing on Odus.
2.2k for the classic era is way too much. It is not too much for Kunark and with Velious, but too much for classic. There isn't enough room for over 1k. And it would have only gotten worse the higher in level the mass population achieved.

I'm still struggling to understand the risk of playing on Teal. Once the population of the combined servers get to a low enough point they will merge.
Just out of curiosity, let's see how long people will be waiting for a group in unrest tonight on Green vs Teal. Those people on Teal xping it up aren't really at risk of a "dead server" like red, because, again, the servers will be merged if the population gets too low.

I just left blue for Teal and, though I'll miss my mid level characters on blue, I am happy I did so.
Teal seems to be mostly low level folks right now, so it ought to be a nice low key server to level on, for the classic era, if the population stays around where it is now, around 600 or so. After that, who knows. Hopefully, when/if they merge Green and Teal I'll have a handful of manastones and guises to flood the market and piss off that odd fellow cd288 :). Just kidding, I'm way too casual for those trinkets.
I remember on blue earlier this year the population going up to 1600-1800 for a while and it feeling crowded in many zones, even the Karana's. So, 600 players or so on a classic server is just about right.

This is what so many people don't take into account. 2,500 people on Blue would be awesome because they can all spread out. But cram all those people into a handful of newbie zones on just a couple of continents and you have a cluster F%#^
I was playing on Sunday when this all went down. When the servers finally came up I logged into green and started looking for a group with my lvl 5 Cleric. I was playing PS4 to kill the time but every 5 minutes I would hit my /ooc Lvl 5 Cleric LFG. I also had the lfg tag on. I finished an entire session of resident evil 2 remake leon B scenario which took me 1 hr 27 min. So in an hour and a half I still had not gotten a group. Then I noticed there was a lvl 8 cleric, lvl 6 cleric and a couple of lvl 5 clerics that had also been LFG during that time frame.
I said to myself too many clerics for too few groups. So even though I had initially decided to stay green I made the leap and went to teal right then and there. I got orc hill group on teal within 15 minutes of being there and we pulled non-stop for three hours. I got to lvl 6 and then to lvl 7 and had more then enough belts to go to BB and do the turn in's which got me to lvl 8 and then some.
Teal on prime time looks good. Teal off hours is where you will suffer. By 2 am there was no one around for me to group with and I had to go solo for a bit. I am hoping that the numbers will even out more over the next few weeks and that a few guilds will move as a group. There is one guild who I saw on teal day one. Kittens who say meow already have a decent presence on teal.

2 am on Monday so it makes sense to be low on players as people do have jobs. I work nights mon-thurs so I can play all night as I am used to going to bed between 5-7 am. Green has all the die hards right now I think. The people who need to be 50 by next weekend and get 10 mana stones in the process.
What I like about teal so far is no shortage of mobs. I can solo and have plenty or group up and the puller has plenty to pull. I can't wait till next weekend to see how the numbers look on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Should be fun!

Teal is slower but not cripplingly slow. There are people to group with, you actually are usually in demand when you go LFG and there are mobs a plenty.
If it goes a couple months and merges back into Green then it's a win for Tealers, who will have a proportionally higher amount of legacy items and general items. Green's massive neckbeard powercorps will hit 35 and start farming manastones faster, but Teal's players will have a lot less competition on that list.

What if Teal has fewer overall players, but a higher percentage of hardcore players/legacy item chasers? I believe this is likely the case. After all, if your overriding goal on the server is simply to camp legacy items, why would you not immediately transfer over to the lower population server?
So for example, if Teal ends up with ~1000 players, 20% of whom are hardcore neckbeards, that means 200 neckbeards. Whereas if Green ends up with 1500 players, 10% of whom are hardcore neckbeards, that's 150 neckbeards.
The real question is: how many neckbeards can dance on the head of a pin while camping Manastones?

Sat LFG 5-10min in Nro, killed a couple blues with less competition, got an invite to Befallen, got my level. Had some nice group banter.
I really don't understand all this misinformation being spread about Teal. I'm thinking Teal will end up with 800-1k prime time, with Green around 1500+ prime time. I think 1500+ is too much to support anything above level 35 in classic, hence why took my first character to Teal. I'll probably start another on Green again later down the road.

I don't understand all these people having trouble finding groups on green. I've been hunting in EC/WC/Nro/Befallen all week and the longest wait I've had for a group was 30 minutes in Befallen one time. I probably could have gone to one of the others and gotten a group quicker but I love switching around where I am hunting. Even day 1 in Nektulos I was in a full group at level 1 and we were slaughtering.

What really needs to happen is people need to stop soloing camps with their stronger than classic pets.
Yeah this is a big problem but mostly because of the server's restrictive camp rules that don't in any way reflect the way in which people play this game.
The other day I was grouped in MR in Unrest, and by the official server camp rules we were 6 people camping the two 22-minute spawns in that room and everything else in the zone was FTE. Normal EverQuest servers would recognize that the MR group pulls the side rooms around it, but because those mobs are located inside of rooms, they're arbitrarily excluded from the MR group's claim as per the server rules.
Shortly after we set up in MR and had pulled a few cycles of mobs, a solo necromancer starts timing all of the rooms while moving between them for each repop. This effectively allowed 1 person to monopolize 10+ mobs, over the full group of 6 people who were there earlier, and is allowed by the rules. Because the solo player can just say I'm no longer camping the previous room, now I'm camping this room. Sure, our full group of 6 could also start timing every spawn and leapfrog for each mob spawn, but this isn't necessarily more efficient than trying to pull/fte mobs from the zone. Also, good luck trying to coordinate something like that across 5 other people who are barely functioning enough to alt tab back from Reddit and press their auto attack button before the mob I pulled dies.
And even if we put all that effort in, we'd then have to give up our claim over the MR, and now you have a situation where a full group of 6 people are allowed the same amount of mobs as a solo necromancer, which still doesn't feel very fair to me.
Full groups need priority in dungeons and the best way to do that is to define camps. MR has claim over all first floor mobs, FP has claim over all 2nd floor mobs, undead knight has everything above FP, basement is everything below 1st floor, and courtyard can be split up into 2-3 camps + solo players. The zone supports about 6-7 groups under these parameters and if you want one of these camps then you have to join the list for an existing group.
Bam, I solved Unrest in under a minute. Why can't we do this for every contested exp zone in the game? The server would be so much better.
tl;dr - Solo players monopolizing group content is a problem, but the bigger problem is the camp rules that allow a single person to claim many more mobs than a full group, even if they're in the same area and the full group's been there longer.

Sure, our full group of 6 could also start timing every spawn and leapfrogging for each mob spawn, but this isn't necessarily more efficient than trying to pull/fte mobs from the zone, and good luck trying to coordinate something like that across 5 other people who can barely function enough to alt tab back from Reddit and press their auto attack button before the mob dies.
tl;dr - Solo players monopolizing group content is a problem, but the bigger problem is the camp rules that allow a single person to claim many more mobs than a full group, even if they're in the same area and the full group's been there longer.
I've never seen the camp rules enforced that way with respect to the MR though. I've seen staff come into disputes and tell the MR group that they can't claim like the spawns in the rooms to the back by the back doors, but I've never seen a staff member say that the MR can only camp that room and someone else can come in and lock down all of the side spawns.

I don't know, I never petitioned or anything because I didn't want to deal with it. I can only go by the server rules, that state than you can only camp the room you're in and mobs that visibly spawn within it.
If the staff treats MR differently then it seems to contradict their rules, which is yet another problem.
This is easily solved by defining camps. I defined MR and every other camp in Unrest. It took me a few seconds to type it up. I'm not sure why we can't just do this for every camp in the game.

Yeah I've seen them apply that rule flexibly in the past. I.e. you technically can't see the mob, but it's like 2 feet around the corner of your room (for example, the corner spawns by the front door of the estate in this case), I've generally seen that applied as part of your camp in the past. Obviously, I think it does depend on how many people are on the first floor trying to kill things. If like 2 other groups came in and wanted to camp the first floor, rulings might be different in terms of how they split things up. But one soloer? I think the Necro in this case would be pretty hard pressed to claim that he can monopolize all of those spawns or that none of them are possibly part of your camp.

I guess this is a problem I have. Do we always have to keep splitting up camps until there are 10 full groups all camping 1 mob each? After a certain point I think we should be allowed to say this area is at capacity, if you want to group go somewhere else or join the list for one of these groups that are already here.
Not only is that more fair, it's more authentic to classic EQ. People generally respected camps and your options were always a) join the list for the group, or b) go elsewhere.
I wish P99 would reflect this culture, instead of constantly splitting up spawns so that soloers can get the full benefit of a dungeon exp bonus with none of the danger, and the full group is left with the risk and the scraps.
But one soloer? I think the Necro in this case would be pretty hard pressed to claim that he can monopolize all of those spawns or that none of them are possibly part of your camp.
Unless I'm misunderstanding the rules I don't think he'd be hard pressed to make that claim, since he's following the rules. Whenever he kills a mob he just moves to the room that's going to spawn next and claims that. Once that mob has spawned, he moves to another room and claims that. It's a cheesy loophole in the camp rules that people have been abusing for years. Not to mention that most of these people would never be able to break or hold that particular camp unless the group that was there hadn't just broken it in the first place.
"Oh you stepped out of your room for 10 seconds to rez your friend? That sucks that you abandoned your camp man, mine now."

As a below level 10 basically naked melee I'm having trouble finding groups, and I think it's because I'm roughly as powerful as a mage/necro pet except with fewer hp and greater agro generation. Attackinig anything immediately pulls agro from all the pets in group, and then my hp drop low af lol. Basically have to stand around doing nothing for the majority of fights just to stay alive, so it's understandable that groups don't want me.

I'm an SK, I was in Befallen all day yesterday and went from 12-15. Hoping to move to High-pass gnolls today and get PGT.
Below 10 you should still be able to get into an orc camp in EC, or the one in WC is still frequently left open so just /who 7 10 LFG all and start putting together a group. Sell the belts for cash, get a magic weapon (tentacle Whip is 5-10pp) and some banded. As a tank you are the leader in Everquest. Especially in dungeons, you have to assemble the group, lead the way in clearing to the camp and pull and maintain agro. Mages and Mecros can't do that because they're all stealth afking the whole time. Though I never really see Mages LFG or in the dungeons at all.
