The dark age of mandatory subscriptions is almost over for one of the industry’s most famous PvP MMORPGs.

Dark Age of Camelot announced that its free-to-play edition, named “Endless Conquest,” should be coming to the game soon without much of a stop on the test server. The target window? Endless Conquest should be coming out to both servers in the latter half of October.

While free accounts can’t use housing, champion level abilities, and are limited to nine of the 21 races, Broadsword said that players should find the restrictions not too limiting considering what’s being made available for all.

“EC accounts will be able to earn max character level and realm rank, Champion and Master Levels, all end-game gear, and so much more,” the studio posted.

I'm actually kinda astonished that DAOC hasn't had a free-to-play option until now. That's kind of incredible to me. How long ago did EQ go f2p?

Also, you can earn "Champion Levels" but not "Champion Level Abilities"? I haven't played retail DAOC in a very long time so I have no idea what that stuff is, but it's gotta be a bit confusing for new players.

is the live version of current DAoC pretty good? is it spoiled with bad cats on the moon type additions?

From what I understand its better than the F2P Private servers like Phoenix, because all the scripting, quests and PVE side of things works 100% so I would say yes.

DAOC had its Luclin/PoP moment too - Trials of Atlantis. A giant time-sink of grindy PvE content in a PvP-focussed game, that players needed to do in order to be competitive in PvP. Live servers have this expansion, I don't think any free shards do.

Live also has a lot of botting (and worse now with F2P I'm guessing), I think at least one or maybe both of the major free shards don't allow it.

If you're looking for PvE content, then DAOC is probably not your best option. You play for the World PvP.

I'd play free shard.

They removed the Trials of Atlantis requirements from all the things ive read everything has been completely revamped!
So this isnt just a F2P model of the game they've also adjusted alot of things according to player feedback.

I wish I could access my stable of 50s from Palomides. I was a hero back then and I paid my monthly fee. Now to start again as some F2P scrub? Nah.

I prefer Warhammer Online (which has a great private server, Return of Reckoning), and the class/content restrictions are just too rough for me to enjoy DAOC.

You can only make these characters on new accounts:

Albion:
Cleric
Friar
Paladin
Sorcerer
Mercenary
Midgard:
Shaman
Healer
Valkyrie
Runemaster
Berserker
Hibernia:
Druid
Warden
Bard
Mentalist
Blademaster

You can't do tradeskills and you'll have lots of chat restrictions. Kinda sucks. :(

love daoc, played the last shard pheonix and got to RR7 but found it to be much less fun

gaming has moved too far past this type of gameplay, they would have to launch old frontiers classic servers to get anyone to play and i doubt they will

DAOC Was #3 MMo of all time imo

Fair enough. I still think you'd be best playing Phoenix (or whatever the latest one is) if you want what DAOC was meant to be about - World PvP. Though it's got its own meta which may not appeal to all.

Oh wow... DAOC is the game I left EQ for, right about the time shortly after AAs came out.

I started on Guinevere (RP) server then went to Mordred (PVP) soon as it opened up. I was a cleric and did Armorcrafting and Spell Crafting. I was one if not the first on server, and I was so busy that I made an outside website people could consult for balancing their spellcrafting on their pieces.. I had so much fun with that game!

From what I understand there is 2 servers f2p can play on also and chat is limited to once every 30 seconds. Might check it out no idea what are those champion abilities but haven't play daoc in a while.

Oh man I remember the Warhammer Online launch. Shame how EA handled that game and didn't give it enough time before releasing it too early.

My first wtf moment in Warhammer Online was getting involved in a keep raid in some foresty Order zone, there were maybe 20 players involved but as soon as we got inside the keep the game just became an unplayable slideshow.

I had a pretty nice gaming pc at the time (2x 8800GT in SLI and a Q6600), and strong cable internet.

I remembered how I could be involved in massive 100 v 100 RvR battle in DAoC without much noticeable lag. And this was on some random Dell PC and dial-up. The same studio made these games. I had also just previously been burnt by both Vanguard and Age of Conan.

I didn't play much longer after that.

Warhammer also had some of the worst class balancing that I've ever seen in an MMO. My class, Shaman, happened to be one of the shitty ones so that also influenced my departure. Bright Wizards were ridiculous (best CC and AOE, you had no choice but to just die) and Ironbreakers were especially stupid. They could punt you anywhere, which meant they would just auto win whenever there was some sort of hazard nearby. Also, there was a volcano BG that was filled with lava, so a solo Ironbreaker could just single-handedly win for his team by just running around and punting everyone into the lava.
