View Full Version : Mage pet DMG/HP nerf

This thread is not about mage pets maxed out at 34, which itself is a joke.
Mage pets have been un-classically nerfed in strength overall... they were OP for the first 3 months then patched thereafter.
I think that the unspoken intention was to try to stop zerg raids on Naggy/Vox early on but as we can see this is still happening. Not expecting anyone to come forward and agree with this in an official capacity but that seems relatively obvious at this point.
Could we not now scale mages up to their rightful place given that the rationale for intentionally dialling them down is unwarranted?
I truly appreciate everything P99 staff are doing but at the abandonment of an entire class seems somewhat overly harsh.
Thanks for reading.

Another thread that will be moved to the RnF by the anti magician coalition.

And btw necro pets also just a shadow of what they were. Sorry i don’t have the time to find documentation those who played back then just know and remember the crazy necro pets destroying with dual fs daggers.

This isn't intended to be an RNF post. Just wondering if there is any official response.
If there isn't, and mages will continue to stay "broken" throughout Green, it's less than idela... but it is what it is.
I just wonder if clerics launched without Complete Heal whether there would be an equal amount of silence?

1. Starting off by calling the staff, who you need to make the change you want, out over a different mechanic... probably not a good way to start a bug report.
2. You need actual evidence provided or the staff won't even read your "bug report."
3. You're grossly exaggerating the weakness of mages without pre-nerf pets rather than making a better, actual argument in favor of the change you want to see.
This isn't intended to be an RNF post.
You probably should write an ACTUAL bug report without the ranting or exaggerations then.

Magician don't live into your enchanter world Tecmos, i don't think they have much patience anymore.

How is any of this relevant to a good bug report?

You guys could start by posting the proposed max hits that mage pets should be doing versus what they're doing now, at each circle of pet.
If you want to see a change, start by doing the legwork and making it very easy on the people you want to make the changes.
I can't do everything around here ffs.

The bugs are already well documented. I didn't want to cover old ground.
Just merely seeking an understanding on if this is forever. If yes, I'll re-roll. I don't want to hunt in Seb with a 34 pet.
Also would be useful to understand if there will be additional future un-classic additions in future releases? i.e. no COTH or mage epic damage halved.
You may assume that I am leaping here but these are equally unlikely things that before green/teal launched would have been laughed at but have still happened.
My questions are valid, as I don't want to sink days weeks months into a class that is being decommissioned.
I hands down 110% appreciate everything Nilbog is doing. But Id rather underline the progress lost if this is forever, and start again - rather than continue down a road of false hope...
If you are not a mage, you simply will not understand. I mean this with the greatest respect.
EDIT - Dola; I know how much you do here... and really sympathise and appreciate.

If I told you pre-launch that mage pets would be capped to 34 damage at level 50 would you would have said something similar, no?

You're asking one of the most "shit's classic" dudes on the forums if I'd have been put off by green mechanics and timeline more perfectly following classic mechanics and timeline?
I'm not trying to divine exactly how or why things end up the way they do on p99. But when things end up true to classic mechanics (as best as anyone can figure out), regardless of whether those mechanics were bugs or oversights, I'm not about to complain. I'd be IN FAVOR of mages having their stupidly-buffed pets, chanters having whirl working, fine steel daggers turning pets into blenders, zone warps in, etc. But this isn't the right way to go about it.

Put it into context, if it was any other class with equally critical spells - lets say cleric with no rez - would your response still be "shits classic" ?

I can't fault your logic if "shits classic" also applies when spawning at lvl 100 with 300 aa on cat moon base alpha.

What?
I'd ask a more specific question, but I really have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

I'm confused here are you saying that damage of Mage Pets and Necro pets is less now since the release of Green/Teal or that they were stronger BEFORE Green/Teal?
I recall the Necro pets and Mage pets hitting like trucks and being very tanky when I first started playing Green. However, that could JUST be perception and that they have been the same since then. I cannot recall fully but they may be a scaling versus level situation. For all I know they weren't nerfed and have been the same since launch.

He is referring to summoned pets being a lot stronger on live eq early in vanilla than they are here.

I'm saying that at 1999 launch, mage/necro pets hit harder and had more HP.
At green/teal launch, this didn't happen.

AH! Thanks for clarifying. Huh, the pets were that strong back in the day in live EQ? I played a Magician back in the day and don't recall them being any stronger than they are now. Then again my memory is TERRIBLE. Seem pretty close to me. Though I wouldn't complain if they made them stronger :)

Thanks for clarifying as well. It would be super cool to see videos and or documentation on this. I'm okay with the pets being beefed up some if it's not classic.

Yea I remember. I think at 34 it was 52.
Going through all my old HDDs of screenshots and shit. I'm sure I must have one.
Nuke DD's on fire and water pets also hit harder.
a post from another forum talking about the same subject:

If you could get info on what the Mage pets' spells were like before they changed in Fall of 1999, especially the Earth pet's before it became root, that would actually be super helpful.

With those original pet damage numbers and 2 charm anything spells, necros were OP as hell.:D
...And people think wizards are sooo out-classed on P99 servers LOL....they're much more competitive here than they were in 1999 EQ ;)

Re-rolling a rogue.
Live on in spirit, mage brothers.
May your level 34 fire pets reign terror on anything up to and including Mistmoore CE.

and necros and shamans had charm.. doesnt mean they are putting it on here.
Mages with bags of root nets and every clicky they can use are a really cool class.
Seeing good warriors with all their toys and spells is great too.
